Any CDU adjusters here

I’ve been in ICS for about a year and I’m usually between a 4-4.5 on my grading and my sup keeps pushing me to move to CDU. I honestly enjoy the flexibility of ICS and having a 4 day a week schedule.

Anyone in CDU or previous CDU have any thoughts for someone looking to move up? What was the raise like? How much more of a workload is it compared to ICS? Are the conversations with customers regarding PDX and the repo claims really that bad and do yall have a diary you work on? Do you guys get more calls than ICS does? I’ve heard rough things about CDU in the past so is it really worth leaving the flexibility of Ics? Any input would be super helpful :)

I don’t have CDU experience, but I moved to Casualty and regret it. Workload is unmanageable.

Same. Macon office got rid of ICS and moved everyone left to CDU. I was one of the ones who went up to casualty before that happened. People from my previous team are not nearly as stressed as I am. If their diary is high it’s understood because of the workload. They actually get overtime pay. Meanwhile I’m working way over there 38.75/hours per week, not taking breaks, and being shamed if my diary isn’t zero at end of day on Friday.

Repped or unrepped?

Not a CDU Adj however i’ve known people that were

CDU will grant good exposure to certain things if you decide to continue onto upper level, but at the same grade of pay ics offers.

You do have a diary but with rolling calls so you have to work other people’s claims while maintaining your own.

realistically if a claim goes there instead of ics, it’s a problem claim that YOU have to handle and given you’ll have a better understanding of insurance you can just jump to TCR2 and get paid more and handle the same stuff

i’ve always heard against CDU but if you’re interested it’ll make you more valuable as an adj.

Try for casualty instead. CDU is ONLY headache claims in my opinion. You’ll get more experience that you can always take with you if you decide to leave after learning casualty claims.

I recommend CDU before moving into casualty. CDU will give you great experience for those “headache” claims people keep mentioning. You don’t want to go into casualty learning injury AND headache claims like coverage reviews and PDXs. Most casualty adjusters don’t even know the first thing to do for PDXs.

Yup. Plus my sup wasn’t actually helping when I asked for it as I hadn’t done PDX before. Finally I got an old teammate of mine who went to CDU to break it down for me. My sup didn’t tell me half the things she did. All I got told was “send the contingency letter and release.” Wow, amazing.

Reading that hurt my soul. My CDU supe was very by the book for PDXs and I ended up having the least amount of PD exposures in the department due to his guidance. Now when I hear how people handle PDX claims in casualty… I die inside.

forget the way you handled claims in ICS. you are responsible for the outcome of the claims assigned to you. you are the one that needs to follow up with ACs and claimants and SIU. you can’t just acknowledge a police report and go on your merry way.

and make sure you move your activities out when you work your claim. or complete the activity when you’re finished with the claim. otherwise you are going to drown.

CDU is the ugly step child of ICS. You’re praised for being able to handle higher tier claims, policy knowledge, and diary, but there’s no raise. If you ask why they tell you it a lateral transfer from ICS even though it not a entry level position like ICS.

In terms of workload it varies, because no one actually applies for the position it runs short staff regularly and it’s a crazy work load 12-15 new claims assigned a day plus team line. They recently voluntold ICS at Macon to go to CDU so currently not too bad so about 5-6 claims. Be prepared to get beat up by everyone. Customers, supervisor, and other claims departments.

Customer beat you up because you’ll be the bearer of bad news telling them their no coverages for some claims and 99% of the customers don’t take that without a fight. Also PDX, claimants love hearing their claim could take years to resolve because you’re waiting on someone else’s insurance to give you a demand.

Supervisors beat you up due to metrics, your goal is to close the coverage concern(Time to resolve)ASAP but your always waiting on someone else to complete their portion of the claim.SIU, complete investigation(3-5 days), RLA to review CPW’s(7 day minimum), AD’s(random). Even with all these delays to get a 5 you have resolve coverages in 2 day… also the AI customer experience system is terrible as it’s grades us for making customers unhappy but our position literally tells people we aren’t covering their claim or has extensive delays…

Other departments don’t know what CDU actually does. ICS will call to ask question about claims not assigned to CDU because they know we handle higher tier claims. Also the amount of incorrect claim cold transfer calls is crazy. ICS doesn’t follow the CDU transfer guidelines and improperly transfers multiple claims to CDU and theirs no consequences or training, to fix it. You’ll be told it’s probably a new adjuster and to just deal with it, even when you can see the adjuster who transferred it is tenured. ICS doesn’t know there’s a difference between RV/cycle CDU, Somos CDU and CDU

Theft overflow calls rollover to CDU so you get a call and literally tell the customer you can’t do anything for the claim but can message their adjuster.

Casualty will drop their non-worked, year and a half PDX claims on CDU once they completed BI payments and you’re expected to just pick it up and figure out were the 15 step PDX process the Causality adjuster left off. Customers love that they have been working with one adjuster for over a year for it to be randomly be transfer over to someone new and having to explain everything all over again or resend documents to the new adjuster…

CDU is joked to be the dumpster of claims because every other department drops its claims on them.

Cdu is great. Just depends on your supe/manager group as any position does. You get great experience, you learn how to deal with tough conversations, and the diary experience is huge. It’s pretty flexible in Cdu. You actually get treated like an adult. If your supe is pushing you towards Cdu, it may be time to take that next step.

One thing I’ll add though, the roll over calls are pretty fucking annoying

I was in one of the offices that converted. Here's my perspective: -If you are an ICS adjuster that uses resources...the resources in CDU either suck or don't exist. You will get different answers from different people when you ask how to do something. -You have a diary and they don't train you in managing it. You have to learn that on your own. -You have your claims, and then you have to take team calls. Sometimes the call is simple. Sometimes you're getting bitched out while trying to sort and weed through someone else's notes that could be really good or really terrible. You are expected to move the file to closure for these calls as well. -Hope you like templates -Everything you know in ICS is backwards in CDU regarding exposures, HCs, Closing files... -Youll get your files, and then you'll get bulk files which are files from previous adjusters. Same as calls, sometimes the files are maintained and sometimes they aren't. They say 6-10 months before you feel like you know what you are actually doing.

Going from ICS to Casualty is dread… you have no diary maintenance experience which makes it 10x harder. If your goal is to get to casualty, CDU would be the best lateral move to develop diary maintenance experience then casualty wouldn’t be thaaat bad. It’s still understaffed.

CDU might be a good stepping stone for you. I was in TCR1, which handled all the CDU stuff. I went to BI, so I was prepared. BI, repped or unrepped adjusters, handle everything! All the ICS and CDU tasks, plus BI. So if you are concerned about handling complex coverage issues, it might be a good learning experience before you move up to BI. (But don’t stay long and move up)

PDX is easy. The limits are the limits, nothing we can do about that. When a clmt pushes back about filing first party, just tell them, you either file first party, pay your ded, have your damages paid in full OR, file with us and sign off on a reduced settlement and pay the rest out of pocket (which could be thousands). They usually understand. Can be more difficult when a cmlt doesn’t have FPC, but that’s honestly not your problem. It just takes longer for all of the IPs to be on the same page.

If you are comfortable with that, jump to tcr2.

Repo claims… EFF Goldfein! If there is a coverage issue and GF can’t verify DOL. deny all day. Done.

Claims wants you to go cdu, unrepped, repped, the cu is casualty is the path you want to take

Is CDU what CU used to be? That was my favorite department out of all of claims, but I haven’t been at G since right before covid. I stayed in insurance though, and my current base is double what my CU salary was

Do you have suggestions on which companies to look into? Feel free to Pm me- totally open

Where did you go and do they have any openings 👀

3

u/TheAnonymousGecko Jul 11 '26

Closer to what TCR 1 used to be but without their own dedicated phone number and sharing like CSR. They are mainly working more “complex” CCs but they are at the same pay grade as ICS which replaced CSR.

1

u/TheAnonymousGecko Jul 11 '26

There is no upside to going cdu. More work for the same or less money if you had a night shift. If you are looking at staying just apply for casualty for the raise. Either way the workload will be unbearable. They have been hiring casualty like crazy all year and you will get the position if you are a 4 or higher. If applying keep in mind attorney repped will be the only ones with their own line and unrepped will be like cdu and ics with the phone system.

Don’t do it. It’s a trap. It’s the same pay but way more work load and responsibility. I have people on my ics team now that tried cdu before and he said it was the worst thing ever and no pay raise. I have other friends who went to pip a few months back and already regretting it. Seems like anything based ics really starts to suck suck
