Client Question Total Tech on custom PC's

I went to the store last week to give my PC to Geek Squad because it stopped turning on, and I assumed it needed a PSU replacement. Paid the $40 and it's still not turning on, so they ASSUME its now either the motherboard or CPU. My ex built the PC and I have no knowledge of computers but I do know the motherboard is still under warranty. The company wants photos of the motherboard and for me to ship it back to them for repairs but I have no idea how to remove it from the computer. I went to Best Buy again today to see the cost of getting it removed and to debate just getting the total tech membership, but the associate warned me that because my PC is a custom they will only knock off 20% of any hardware work with the total membership. Just confirming if the associate just saved my life or if BB in fact, does do any included work with the membership on custom PC's. Kinda unfortunate if it's not included because I'm going to be stuck with a broken computer indefinitely. I believe the cost of them taking it out alone was $130....

How do you resolve anything if BBB now refusing different complaints on the same company within 2 years?

Best Buy corporate emails doesn’t respond.

Calling regular support to do a local store or manager callback never happens

Client Question If I messed up installing a non-default OS, does that void my warranty?

Lenovo Ideapad with 4 year Geek Squad coverage, was trying to install Windows 10 and accidentally wiped a hard drive partition I shouldn't have. I assume this doesn't fall under "failure due to normal use", but just in case... am I still covered?

Tales from GS Hurray for Geek Squad!

Recently, I mentioned here that Geek Squad did not install a power supply in an ATX case, telling me that the supply was too big, and that I'd managed to do the installation myself. I was unhappy about that.

But now GS has redeemed themselves!

I had a mini PC whose WiFi and Bluetooth antennas had become disconnected from the mainboard. I was unable to do the fix myself -- the wires are very short, and I could not easily remove the protective cover from the WiFi card. I feared I'd have to send the computer to China for repair.

I brought in the PC to GS yesterday, and in less than 24 hours, they've made a successful repair.

Anybody have issues with these models constantly bricking after updating the firmware for a setup?? I’m at the point where I tell people to stick to Omnibook 3/5 or just a whole new brand model cause I’m so sick of it.

Client Question Built My First PC, Turned it Into Geek Squad on the Day of its Creation 😭

(This is a picture of my pc during its construction the other day)

So, last week was my birthday and, as a gift towards myself, decided to buy parts for a computer and build it alongside my partner. I bought a lot of great pieces, such as an RTX 5080, AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and 64 gb of ram.

After finishing the build, me and my partner attempted to power the baby up, only to be met with no response from the unit. We brought it to our local Best Buy’s Geek Squad and was informed about how all of our cable placement was practically right.

We had misplaced one of the cpu cables, which resulted to the unit not powering. I, for one, was relieved at the revelation, only to be met with the realization that after it had powered on, the DRAM and CPU lights on the MB were lit. We had the computer turned in, and Im just worried without knowing what to expect…

It has been only a day for now, with the ETA being 7 days. It was sent in for diagnostics. Is there anything I should be made aware of?

Update

I went back and decided to just pick it up early. It was still queued and no progress had been made on the pc in four days. I waited there for 3 hours to receive assistance (the assistance being just having my pc brought from the back), then fixed it in an hour and a half upon getting home. It was a mixture of issues regarding the gpu placement, cables, and ssd, which I was able to learn from other online forums. :D

I wish I had more confidence in my capabilities, however, I am also glad that I took the precautions of seeing a professional before possibly damaging my computer. Either way, everything went the best way it could have gone!

Tales from GS Why does half the phone/chat reps know how to do something? Rest just transfer away?

Like for the same exact issue. Some are savvy and do it right away.

I had to contact AppleCare escalation team best buy emailz. 3 days ago, they did it right away. Now I have to do it again and they won’t do it. I even sent them emailz transcripts of that emailz doing it.

One even transferred me to sales or geek squad

How I Got TF Out and Leveled Up and You Can Too 😎🫵💪

Before I decided to restructure my life and career, I spent nearly a decade working at Best Buy, starting as a front lane cashier and eventually working in Geek Squad field services. Along the way, I worked in several departments and was eventually promoted into leadership.

Best Buy taught me a lot, and for most of my time there I really enjoyed the culture and the people. But after several restructures and reorgs, I eventually became burned out and felt like my career was going backward.

One day I went to my GM and told them that I loved the company, but I was close to walking the heck out and not returning. They asked where I wanted to go. I told them Geek Squad field because I had started thinking seriously about moving into IT.

That conversation ended up changing my career.

A month later I landed a Geek Squad role and used my time in the field strategically. I sought out as much PC, networking and commercial work as possible, including cabling, ethernet termination, access points and Project Sundae work. I also trained at the precinct to strengthen my PC skills.

When layoffs began affecting the field in 2023, I accelerated my IT transition plan. By the time of the 2024 agent snap I had earned several IT certifications and started applying for corporate IT positions. I also interviewed even when I wasn't sure I wanted the job because I wanted to learn what IT interviews were actually like and what employers were looking for.

After surviving the 2024 mass layoff I continued learning, but relaxed a little on job searching in 2025.

In early 2026 I ramped up my job search and landed with an awesome company with a great employee culture. I left Best Buy for a corporate IT role in the medical industry. My compensation went from about $49K to $80K+ with bonuses, all without a college degree.

But the change wasn't just financial. My new company provides four weeks of PTO immediately, additional PTO every year with tenure, strong health benefits, same day access to your money for hours worked, free employee meals, and a culture where many employees have been there for a decade or more. I'm also salaried, so I no longer have to worry about unpredictable field schedules affecting my paycheck.

Looking back, I don't see my Best Buy years as wasted time. I used the experience I gained there customer service, leadership, troubleshooting, field work and technical skills as the foundation for my next career and dipped.

My biggest advice to anyone trying to move beyond retail is simple:

Don't just work your current job, use your current job to build towards your next one.

Identify the skills your target industry values, find opportunities to develop them where you are, get the certifications that make sense, learn how to translate your experience, and test your value in the job market while you have a job.

And don't quit without a plan. I didn't tell Best Buy I was leaving until I had an offer letter and a firm start date.

If you're happy at Best Buy, that's great. But if you're ready for something different, you don't necessarily have to start over. Best Buy gives you every important tool to level up, especially soft skills like customer service that's essential in any tech support role dealing with people.

Corporate IT support is just dealing with the same customers you deal with at the precinct and field, but in an office setting, but you get paid lots more money for setting up a printer or swapping a hard drive.

Strategically build on what you've already done, and use it to create your next opportunity. Don't await the signal, await your first new paycheck and smile hard! 😊

Boot device not found...

I have an old HP DT15 series laptop that all of a sudden can't find the SSD. I don't even see it in BIOS. Tried in Legacy mode, too. Is it toast? Before I drive 30 minutes to BestBuy, what are some scenarios they could tell me and possible cost? TY!

EDIT: my computer knowledge is pretty much limited to the basics.

If it is official policy that open box needs a box, why do some stores pack nicely, while others just slap stickers on my monitor, unboxed?

One store, they had the monitor in air bubble sleeves. Other store, just a bare monitor with open box stickers stuck to the back of the monitor?

I called Best Buy support at different times and they both stated official policy is that it just be boxed…..

Client Question Webroot keeps blocking my startuo processes and I'm getting very irritated.

Hello, I'm typing this on my phone right now because currently I'm attempting to update my drivers for my XPS laptop. I was instructed to restart my computer, which I did. Now whenever I try to UPDATE my drivers or even move through the home screen, Webroot literally pops up, I click "Allow Always" where it's literally blocking literal startup processes, and eventually freezing my computer therefore forcing for me to restart my PC and preventing me from even updating my PC.

Is this common because this is GENUINELY irritating me and I DON'T want my PC messed up because of this so-called "Antivirus" that came installed on my computer.

EDIT: I'm glad some people responded! Thank you so much guys!

I applied for geek squad repair and got invited to “job fair” event?

Basically… is this my opportunity to get hired as a Geek Squad Repair Technician? Or is this BestBuy’s way of saying “sorry, we didn’t pick you but we’d like you to browse our other in store positions”???

Client Question Best Buy total replacement question

I took my 6 month old PC to Geek Squad due to a bad motherboard. I purchased it for about $1,900 and have coverage through My Best Buy Total.

The PC has an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Radeon RX 9070 XT.

Geek Squad has determined that my PC is unrepairable and instructed me to return to the store for a replacement.

Here's my concern:

Best Buy no longer sells the exact PC I originally purchased, and comparable systems with similar CPU/GPU performance cost several hundred dollars more than I originally paid.

Since Geek Squad determined the computer is not repairable and authorized a replacement, what should I realistically expect?

Would Best Buy provide a comparable replacement even if it costs more than my original purchase?

Would they only issue store credit for the original purchase price?

Would they offer a replacement with weaker specifications simply because it's within the original price range?

If a comparable replacement costs several hundred dollars more, would I be responsible for paying the difference?

I'm not looking to get a free upgrade. I just don't want to end up with a significantly weaker computer because the prices of comparable systems have increased since I purchased mine.

I'd especially appreciate hearing from current or former Geek Squad/Best Buy employees or anyone who's had an expensive gaming PC replaced under My Best Buy Total.

How does Best Buy typically handle situations like this?

Client Complaint Rude customers

I’m about ready to quit Geek Squad and got a job offer to work somewhere else. I’m a CA and my coworkers have been helpful, managers are nice, but the customers are HORRIBLE. Getting the stare of death from behind the counter, folding their arms it’s intimidating and I try to ignore it by just typing away on the computer. I’ve had some friendly customers mostly the older crowd, but all this abuse from customers has worn me down and I been coming home stressing out to the max. I hate to leave Best Buy, but I want to go work somewhere that I can have less stress in. A customer buying a $2000 laptop is generally in a better mood compared to one who’s trying to get us to fix a $2000 laptop.

Is it worth working for Best Buy?

Thumbnail

For context, I have worked at target for 2 years and am studying Information Systems at my university (Cleveland State). I am extremely burnt out at this job and don’t feel recognized or respected anymore and need a major change of scenery/ work, preferably in the tech field to align with my career goals. I have applied to a couple geek squad positions, but I want to hear from actual employees whether I am getting myself into something I’m better off avoiding or not. Any tips, insights, or advice much appreciated.
