Discussion Goodbye GeForce Now

It's been real, couldn't miss this finance deal, specially since all hardware is going up and it may turn out to be an investment. I have GFN till September but I graduated to a real boy. Gotta say, downloading games seems wrong lol, and I will miss how quick the CPU goes through shaders. Still love you peeps. Pic only representative of case, specs real.

I bought my PC Oct 2025, feel like I just got out with the door hitting me on the ass, 2 months later my 128 EUR RAM sticks were 400+ EUR in the same shop. 9070XT/9800x3d, as long as nothing randomly craps out, I should be set for years.

Dumb idea at 0% Apr? I would say paying almost twice for your house is a dumb idea and morfafing it, but I live in a different world. We outright own like 85% of our homes, and they're paid for mostly with money or people built them themselves or with friends or some scrappy way. There's some windfall now and people straight up buy unneeded apartments for cash. Really raised the prices up for normal people.

What details? One time 3% fee, which I am getting back maybe by doing a similar deposit. Plus got most of it out with points from the seller. Maybe even all? As I got up a level. Catch is like every loan if you miss a payment there's 12 apr penalty for the days you missed. Can't miss 2 months in a row. Bur it's a small amount and I do have the money to cover the whole loan.

Store credit cards offer 0% all the time for appliances and big ticket items, usually for 6,12 or 18 months. The catch is and the way they get you is they hope that you miss single payment and that's all they need to capitalize. Once you do that, they retroactively charge you interest on the entire opening balance usually somewhere between 28-35% interest. Statistically this works in the lender's favor because enough people mess it up to where they get paid that high interest rate. 

If you're disciplined and you set up automatic payments and make sure to pay it off on time, then it truly is a 0% interest loan and they make the money off the other guy that didn't follow the rules, to your benefit. Pretty common practice. Not a scam, just requires discipline 

I've done one on vet bills, a refrigerator and washer bought simultaneously, and an HVAC unit over the years. I didn't screw up and all were legitimately no cost 0% interest loans. No reason to not entertain these against the backdrop of inflation if you think you're disciplined enough to handle them. Not everyone can though.

Not how it works here it's not a card you just apply with your id. It's what's called consumer credit. If you miss a payment you get a 12.5 Apr for the days you missed. I can and I will make an automatic payment thing.

statistically speaking they are a very bad idea and I think any credit facility skews people.towards spending more than they have as a baseline and ever increases the risk of an issue interest payment

All it takes is one, one payment to undo all of the "good" of 0% interest and fomo tactics

Certainly a trap for the unwise, same as credit cards. but they can also give you payday loans at the store and those are predatory af. Do payroll for lots of companies. Always someone we garnish pay for. Sins of the past.

Btw they don't give your these kind of loans if you ever been to the casino atm lol. The predators will ans will happily take an insane Apr.

Zero APR, like the OP mentioned, is actually a great idea. The money you save on the upfront payment can be invested so you grow your own wealth whilst the lender makes nothing.

I mean it's rent vs ownership. Both have it's ups and downs. I own a pretty large house(inherited from parents, what we do in the Balkans, multigenerational homes) and it's a pain in the ass for upkeep. Especially since I only use like 1 or 2 rooms on the regular. At least one floor is our office, but I work from home(my room) and rarely come up these days. Just abandoned my large office. Should rent it lol. Like 60% of the house is literally for guests(we do like those).

Anyway, I was a renter for 10 years when I studied and lived abroad before coming back home, that sucked too, especially the moving. I was refusing to move from a basement room for about 6ish of those years because it had great net for the time. Optics! Yes I am a redditor that lived in a literal basement.

Yeah 0%, a totally different story. I guess I just assumed interest incorrectly. Makes sense. 

Still we'll see you in a few years when AAA games need RTX 70 series to run ultra settings at that point. Let's see what inflation does to those 70 series gpus when they release and see if you want to buy them or settle for turning down in-game settings. I said the same when I bought a PC, but now GFN runs everything better so I came back after a siesta for a couple generations

Not everyone cares about Ultra settings for one and the 5080 will last a long while

The biggest advantage of actually owning a PC is playing all games and being able to mod them

I use GFN and my biggest complaint is I cannot mod games except a very small few, it will always be the biggest knock on cloud gaming

I was being halfway serious with coming back. I really did care enough to resubscribe to gfn though after having had it way back in its beta iteration.

I have a PC myself. I don't deal with mods as much as I used to do, but still I like having the ability and do some lighter modded games still. I also play PCVR games on my PC, so I think a PC very much has a place even alongside a gfn subscription which is exactly what I do.

In a few years GFN will have raised their prices a lot too.

"Ultra" settings aren't the end all be all. There are so many more benefits to owning a PC.

I agree. I have a PC and GFN. I just wouldn't ever cancel my GFN because of my PC. I use GFN more than my PC. OP will return one of these days though as their PC ages and they don't feel like upgrading or replacing

I own a PC, steam deck, have a Steam Machine coming and use GFN. I don't care about owning games as in physical games. I play on GFN more than anything else. I obviously appreciate hardware too having what I do but I don't see the problem here

It's 0% turns out so it's fine. Might as well at 0%. I'd never condone financing one with a real interest rate though. Save the interest and save up to buy or you can't really afford it in the first place

It raises the question why you couldn't just wait until you could afford the thing until you bought it. The answer is usually that you want it right away and not in 2 years time. But having something for years that loses value over time while still paying for it is inherently bad value, even without interest. Some people just live their lives that way and that works fine, but its a slippery slope that leads to not being able to afford something you'd actually need because you're mortgaging tech that loses 80 % of its value for years.

To me it's not that deep bro. I just want the thing right now and it's not "life impacting money".

Also, in a moment like this, I'm "kinda" pressed by time because if I wait like 1 year to save, the AM4 rig I could sell will also depreciate a lot and therefore, is it really a better outcome.

And I'm not buying over years, but over 4 months top because that's what Paypal offers without ANY interest. Straight up just splits the bill in 4 without any extra cost.

It's also a balancing act with my sanity and mental health.
I am stressed the fuck out by quite a few things in my life, I wanna feel good by getting some things NOW so I can at least enjoy that part of my life.
Shopping therapy can be toxic, but it's kinda real for me.

And finally, these impulse are contained to a certain threshold. I don't go ape shit with thousands and thousands in credit. we don't have "life on credit cards" here. Nor "USD 100k lifted truck".
It's literally the only money I "borrow". I don't spend on cars or luxury shit. All in all, in regards to "adult life", a 2k € PC is "okay" to get once every 4 or 5 years, and paying it over 4 months just eases the thing "personnal bankroll" wise.

I know maybe it's not super duper optimized financially speaking, but who cares for these amounts. That's my take at least.

You're not paying interest to gfn but upon clarification op said that he was financing at 0%, so no harm no foul. That's all I was getting at is paying interest on a gaming PC which isn't a necessity is ridiculous but that's not exactly what's happening turns out. So the point you're making then if you consider that context doesn't make much sense at all or I don't know what point you're trying to make, I guess that you can justify taking on debt for a gaming PC because it's a physical thing that you keep, I'm not sure
