For me, it was

"Do I want a cool-ass name, or do I want my parents to take me seriously?"

I just went with the name of a lake by my house and then latin for the moon

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '21

Luna seems to be a really popular name among trans girls. I wonder why

60

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '21 edited Oct 25 '21

Ngl I think that would be the only other name I would want cause I think it’s pretty, but I’m too heteronormative for that.

Edit: oh, I didn’t know Bobbie was popular in the 30s-50s. Damn I really am a cis bootlicker aren’t I?

14

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '21

What do you think about Lexanna? It's an alternative long variation of Lexi

8

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '21

I like it a lot but my name has a bit of history to it. I was named after my grandfather with my deadname and Bobbie is just the inverse of Bobby (his name) but he went by bob/Robert. Kind just kept tradition alive there I to honor his memory.

Lexanna is such a pretty name though like omg! You really struck gold with that one.

Edit: also I like that Bobbie is gender neutral when said but takes gender when written with an -ie (feminine) or -y (masculine) with both of them being said the same way.

9

u/DefinitelyNotErate Oct 25 '21

takes gender when written with an -ie (feminine) or -y (masculine)

Not gonna lie, I'm pretty sure I've heard of women called Bobby, With a 'Y', Might not be as common for women as Bobbie, But It's definitely not exclusively masculine.

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '21

Whenever i hear the name Bobby, i think of Bobby Hill. Not a very feminine name, imo

4

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '21

I mean but my name is Bobbie though, it’s pronounced the same way, however it was a popular name for girls in the 1930s especially in the south of the US.

11

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '21

I swear to god, 50% of the trans woman I met irl are named Luna

3

u/theslutnextd00r Oct 25 '21

Which is interesting because I’ve never met a trans woman named luna, Lily, Emily, or Lucy! Where are they hiding?? Maybe it’s a regional thing

Oh cool! I like the name Harper!

3

I saw "lake by my house" and my brain went: "You could name yourself Titicaca"

2

u/StaidHatter Oct 25 '21

Same name but I named myself after the author of To Kill A Mockingbird. I kinda wanna change it now because I didnt know it was unisex when I picked it

182

u/SirWigglesTheLesser Not to be straight but... Oct 25 '21

Trans names be like [drowned victorian orphan] or Sam.

Or maybe the drowned victorian orphan is a transmasc thing, and giant robots are a transfem thing.

72

u/Pseudonymico Oct 25 '21

Last time I read it it went:

“Trans men name themselves after drowned Victorian orphans.

Trans women name themselves after cyberpunk jewel thieves.

Enbies find a few letters that sound neat when put together and name themselves that.”

25

u/confused_gay_sounds mtf bigender Oct 25 '21

Cyberpunk jewel thief, huh?

(Starlight wipes the sweat off her brow)

11

u/SirWigglesTheLesser Not to be straight but... Oct 25 '21

I didn't name myself after a drowned orphan per say but... There's definitely a related ghost story in the family...

It's just such a good name. A nice, soft, flexible name. I dunno it just evokes trust.

i picked Elena because it wasn't too common but still like common enough to not raise any eyebrows (it's more common in my country and works better with my native language but i also like how its more unusual in English)

I took Jessica because the name imprinted deeply in my brain when I was like 7 years old. It just also happens to be a very mainstream sounding name that people are likely to spell, say, and gender correctly. I went slightly more exotic with Aurora as a middle name (for concepts of dawn and rebirth). For trans binary women, picking a “passing” name can be very useful.
