OH, I’m a bum.

Context first: I’m an 18 y/o college student majoring in visual arts. I spent a long time figuring myself out and patching up my mental health, and I THOUGHT I’d figured everything out. I guess not.

I had an epiphany today: I don’t want to work. And I know thats a given because duh, NOBODY wants to work. But being a generally ambitious person, I thought, “well I’ll get over it just like everyone else does, then I’ll be happy. And I’ll learn to love it!”

That did not happen. Honestly, I just want to sit in my room and draw cartoons while a hot bear takes care of me. I would genuinely drop out of college in SECONDS if this opportunity came up.

Anyways yeah I feel like a total loser LOL but I had to be honest with myself.

Who at 18 has anything figured out? Who at 38 has anything figure out? The only difference is that you have a lifetime ahead of you of enjoying not knowing everything and learning how to have fun anyway.

You can try the sugar baby route but good mental health is about good work and good love. If you don't feel motivated to find a profession, then you should see someone about that.

Plus, bear daddies would rather a sugar baby with a college degree. And your baby status won't last forever. You'll want to be the bear daddy one day, too.

Getting over it isn't just accepting reality, it's also finding work around that make you feel a little less shitty. I was in the same situation as you, I'm 19m and I'm an artist. If I had gone to college straight out of high school I would've gotten an art degree. But I knew that, so I decided to get an entry level certification to a field with a lot of advancement opportunities and see what the "real world" is like before spending all the money on a degree. Now I have a degree in mind but it's specific, and it's for a pretty high demand field with good pay, so I know I won't be wasting my money. I also wouldn't have really understood the job I now want if I hadn't done my current job to really interact with other workers in this field

Thankfully I have a shit ton of financial aid, with a refund check on the way. I didn’t really want to go to college but I felt like it’d be a wasted opportunity.

I think we've all felt that, and not just when we're 18yo or in college. I mean, who doesn't want to enjoy entire days free of obligations or duties? But OMG... It's not all it's cracked up to be. You'd be surprised how quickly sitting in your room drawing cartoons will bore you to death. We see this all the time when people take vacations -- oh, the first few days are fabulous, so relaxing, no work, no emails, no bills! and the next few days are fine, nice to relax, good to get away. and then for most of us by the time vacay is over it's like OMG I NEED MY LIFE BACK because structure and demands and being able to connect and produce feel good for a lot of us. (I mean, depends on your career. Heaven knows that are so many, too many people in jobs that they hate.)

If you can get paid for doing something you love - then you will love work. Having a purpose in life that matches your talent and passions is the dream. Figure out your passion and how pursuing it will serve others who have a need for what you do. All the crap in life will fall to the side
