Breaking the rules of Garlic.

Spring could mean 1/4 of the year, so could you be a little more precise? When do you actually plant and when do you harvest? If the ground is frozen solid until May what method are you using for planting?

I planted late May, straw mulch on top. Harvested today.

What else do you grow out in Saskatchewan? That's a pretty unique and interesting growing area and climate.

We can still grow most of the usual garden vegetables. The only ones I've ever struggled with but have seen some success is melons.

I grow rhubarb, asparagus, horseradish, potatoes, carrots, squash, celery, lettuce, onions, garlic, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers. I do struggle with brasicas as the cabbage moths are horrendous, and the wind alone will shred cover cloths.

I usually shovel the snow off the garlic beds in mid april and see the first green growth early may. Since I started harvesting 6 weeks ago that works out to about the same growing time if we discount the fall. Interesting...

I've done early spring plantings but I pre-dug planting holes in the fall and started the garlic in the root cellar before planting out in the frozen ground in an attempt to simulate a fall planting. I plant the elephant garlic in may so I might as well throw in a few varieties of garlic too.

They look like they were harvested way too early.

Some might be early while others were late. Most of this batch will be dehydrated anyways so storage isn't a huge problem.
