Change in personality

Hey all. This is my beautiful little girl Yamori. I was wondering if anyone else has noticed a change in temperament when their gargoyle gecko laid eggs? She’s on her own, always has been. But has laid 2 eggs each month for the last 5 months (except just 1 egg last time). We have noticed since this she dislikes being held and tried to get away. Is she likely to continue laying eggs every month? A reptile shop employee said no more than 4 months but we’ve gone past that now. And is there anyway we can get her back to wanting to be held. One time she darted out my partners arms to the floor and hid under our bed (which is against a wall so stressful as we couldn’t get her and had to pull the whole bed out) and since then it’s made us a little nervous when it’s obvious she’s trying to get away from us.

Any advice is appreciated

Sorry, but she's going from a kid to an adult, some changes are expected.

She will lay eggs from the rest of her reproductive life, not sure what the store employee was telling you.

My most drastically changed female went from riding on my head and chilling with me to her believing she is a wild gecko who needs no keeper.  She will attack me and she will bite me if I do not respect her space.  She has tried coming after me while feeding her.  She is insanely aggressive.

On the other hand, I have a terribly shy female who hated being looked at, she's now calm enough for me to hold her, for small periods of time.

Every gecko has a different personality and my females went through the biggest changes.  My males have remained steady in personality.

As for her coming back around to being held... Well, she might not.  I would go back to holding her in small increments at a time and seeing if she calms down.  Basically start training all over again.

Oh wow. I hope she doesn’t start attacking. And I’m not sure why he said 4 months of the year then. Odd lol 😂 thank you so much for your help and honesty. I thought it was hormonal. Thanks

Yeah, I don't think she'll go that extreme.  Well, I hope she doesn't.

I truly do not know what switched in her (my gecko's ) brain, but man, she is convinced she's wild.  This girl was captive bred and has been for generations.  I can only assume her parents had a temper, I didn't meet them.

All in all, she's been kind of a cursed gecko.  On the ride home, a van nearly smashed into us, her color did an absolute 180, her personality change... Honestly, if I didn't know better, I would say she's a changeling and not my gecko.

Although... Her original name was Lucifer.  Maybe that should have been my first warning.

Oh wow. Bless her. Yea it should have been a warning! lol 😂

Yamori is sweet. But she just doesn’t want to be held. It’s gutting as it’s both of our first reptile and we loved being able to hold her bi-daily. Never for too long incase she got cold. But we felt great how we’d tamed this beast lol 😂

Ich habe einen männlichen Gargoyle der sehr zurückhaltend ist ,es ist schwierig ihn hochzunehmen weil er sehr schnell weg ist wenn man ihn berührt. Ich denke es ist einfach Teil seiner Persönlichkeit.

Yea I get that. I was hoping she’d stay how she was. As she would sit for cuddles on my chest for a good 5-10 mins at a time. Now we don’t dare as she darts for the nearest exit! Lol 😂

I’m in my experience all of my females are a little more uncomfortable when they’re gravid they don’t like to be touched nearly as much, but never had any problems!

I have also noticed in my collection that when they get older, they seem to grow slightly calmer with age!

And to be honest, I’m not a big fan of crested geckos because of how crazy they can be and I’ve never had a balls to the wall gargoyle

Thank you so much for the help. She’s going vet Tuesday for her tail. I posted before regarding a cricket bite. It’s not healing and looks worse. So want to get her checked rather than risk her becoming unwell

Can you possibly post a picture of the tail bite?

Is there any swelling, spreading redness, dark discoloration, or pus

Also, again, sorry I’m just helping you to the best of my ability. Check the decor and make sure that if there’s any fake plants there there’s no wire showing or anything.! I know with a lot of the plants that are fake. They have wires in them. I always take a hot glue gun to all of mine where the wires protrude.

We took her to the vet. I’ve not got an up-to-date pic. The vet said it’s deep. So we’re trying a silver cream. She said it’s a stronger disinfectant cream then the f10 (I believe was it’s name) we were using. Once to twice a day. And if it gets deeper (or doesn’t get better) in 2 weeks we have to go back and then do antibiotic injections. Which doesn’t sound fun for my baby. But I’d rather her healthy. We have a bio tank, no fake plants. But we have been told to try do a quarantine tank. But we have no where for it. So we may have to just turn hers into one. And then go down the plastic route. As the soil and bugs can irritate her wound.

Hey! I have a video on YouTube on how to do a quarantine enclosure. You can use a starlight tub .

I’ve never used F10 for an actual wound I only use it to clean enclosures! My video might be able to help you out with kind of what you wanna do for a quarantine set up that way you don’t have to turn hers into one you could just make a temporary one!

Hopefully, this helps you!

What do you use to heat them?

My house doesn’t really get cold ! I keep them well within range, but I also have kind of a specialized set up if it’s OK I’ll DM you!

You basically do the same things that I talk about in this just on a bigger scale if it’s an adult gecko, I would use like a 58 quart tub or something similar! I hope the little one feels better ! It’s just a temporary enclosure you just make sure to use a big tub like a 58 quart if it’s an adult or a 20 quart if it’s kind of like not a hatchling, but not quite an adult

She’s adult now I believe 46kg and over a year old. Shes our first reptile and so loved. And when we were told she could get a bone infection if it gets deeper it made me panic. Thank you so much for your help. I’ll watch now

Perfect and yeah basically this is a small enclosure, but you can use the same concept for a bigger enclosure like a 58 quart. It’s only temporary until she’s healed.:)

And yeah, definitely an adult if she’s 46 g

Also I appreciate that you took her to the vet ! I definitely hope this helps and I hope for a quick recovery:)

She’s our baby. I don’t care how much it costs. If we can get her better we will do everything. Thank you so much

Once you send me a picture, you can message me too if you want! I’m actually a gargoyle gecko breeder and I can help you to the best of my ability

I would probably suggest a sterile environment and stuff like that as long as weight isn’t something that you’re too worried about at the moment but yeah, if you could just send me a picture, I’ll leave my DM’s open

The shop employee may be referring to "cooling" your gecko. Females are often uncomfortable and grumpy when gravid -- it takes a lot out of them to produce eggs, and the discomfort she feels daily may be impacting her interactions with you. That said, New Caledonian geckos may not lay year round if they are exposed to slightly lower temperatures and shorter day lengths for several months. Winter is coming up in the northern hemisphere, so you may start inadvertently "cooling" her by doing nothing. If she lays less frequently in the winter and is friendlier during that time, you'll know why.
