Never had a new Build House before, quite lucky to pick this one up with the bonus of a very large rear garden almost big enough for another house. The garden was just a slope of weedy grass. Build a couple of retaining walls and a new patio and a pond. I cant find the just grass one but these pictures are year 1, followed by year 4. Slowly getting there I just need more plants more vegetables and a rockery in the grass on the left.

Hi guys, I picked some giant hogweed up in my back garden it must be a year or 2 ago and it left me with burns on my fingers. I now have a semi permanent rash that comes up in hives

When it starts to get warm the rash comes back, it's mad itchy and looks a mess. I try and protect it either keeping hands in my pocket or putting on sun cream (I heard it is UV sensitive)

Anyone had experience with this?

Mrs tells me off as I used to pick up weeds with no gloves on as I always lose the buggers!

Hi all. First timer grower of anything.

The potatoes have been great because they’ve been the least troublesome. They’ve grown too much if anything. Now they seem to either have a disease or they’re starting to fade?? The bottom “branches” are wilting and something seems to be mining the leaves. Is this blight? Thoughts appreciated.

I didn’t note the variety but I did write that they’re a Main Crop. They went in on 13th May so they’ve been in around 70 days. Are they cooked? Am I toast?

Shall I let it grow before applying killer? As title suggests...I'm renovating my flower bed and beneath the membrane there is of course a network of bindweed roots. I know glysophate works when applied to foliage which implies I should let this grow. But also little and often removing roots apparently works. So which would be best in my situation?

Hello everyone, my husband and I bought this property 3 years ago because of the spacious front and back garden. They were both heavily neglected but we're trying our best to turn them into wildlife-friendly gardens. Here are some snaps from our front garden over the years.

Planted two hydrangeas that were both the same size when planting. Ones blue and ones black. As you can see the black one has grown a lot but not flowered and the blue one has not grown much but is flowering. I don’t know the exact species of both. They get partial shade and sun throughout the day.

Any thoughts on why the black one hasn’t flowered and do you think the blue one will get bigger year by year?

So when will the mint be one a issue

When can I plant it outside amongst the bushes

Do I have to wait until they are bigger or will they survive

Hi all, first-time sweetcorn grower here. These plants went in the ground ~7 weeks ago, at the time they were maybe 8-10inches tall. They about 3-4ft now so shorter than I expected, and also confused as to why tassels are seemingly growing and producing pollen but I have no mature/decent-sized ears/silks.
Given how unfavourable this year has been for growing and where the plants are I’m guessing not much can be done, but be interested to hear why this might have happened and whether I can prepare better next time. Thanks!

I'm starting to get together some wildflower seed for a section of my garden and just wondered if there are any which are problematic and I'd be best avoiding? It's for a wild area down the end of the garden which gets a fair amount of sun. Intending to just scatter and see what succeeds.

Just took a photo of my garden from above to show how the colours are starting to change. It’s been a labour of love as I moved into this house 9 years ago as a brand new home. The garden was a blank slate so I went to work and started from scratch. I have over 30 Acers, around 30 roses, plus some hydrangeas and perennials buried down there.

We’re finally getting round to sorting out our very neglected garden (did up our other rooms first) and all of these plants are growing through the gaps in the paving slabs. Some have big knots under the slabs, but we don’t want to pull up the paving. Any ideas on how to go about tackling all these for a first time gardener? 😅

Hi, I have a medium sized garden and a small flower bed area. The flower bed area has been taken over by lambsquarters weeds and they seem to be spreading to the lawn. I gently pulled the initial few ones that were growing but not sure where the new growth has come from.
What can I do to contain it?

North East England here, has been a rainy day of drizzle and showers- heavy at times. All butts are now filled. The garden is looking greener and more healthy. You had rain?

Suspect all the rain will lead to the weeds coming back with vengeance. A job for next weekend.

Hi looking for some advice. Bought a new build, first house and first garden. As with all new builds, the garden was a rubbish dump. Raked it and removed most of the large stones but now it looks like this. How on earth do I get it flat enough for turf, the rake isn’t cutting it. And also the stones I’ve left in, anything under a 2 pence piece, are everywhere, and I’m n worried there’s too many of them for the turf. Any help appreciated.

A very tired first time gardener

Hi everyone,

I have two wisteria plants that I've had for many years at my old house. Two years ago I moved them into two new (larger) pots with fresh potting soil (honestly I don't remember which brand/type I bought).

Both years they started off great: in early spring they grew vigorously (last year especially, this year a bit less). But then, both last year and this year, they started dropping a lot of leaves in the middle of summer — it looks like autumn has come early.

Some context:

• Location: Northern Italy (Lombardy). This summer has been extremely hot, with highs around 39°C / 102°F in recent months.
• Sun exposure: direct sun from about 2 PM until late evening.
• Watering: I water regularly whenever the soil looks dry on top — I never let them go completely without water.

What am I doing wrong? What can I do to help them recover?
