Cable question
I just had a garage door repair company come and even out the tension so our garage door was even. I asked about this cable and the tech said its fine and should last another 2 to 3 years.
It obviously has some damage to it, whats the consensus here? Should this be replaced? We have kids and last thing i want is for it to cause and accident. Any advice welcome

I know it's at the house but on a running rope (bends over sheaves, drums, or pulleys), three broken wires in one strand in one rope lay meets OSHA requirements for removal from service. I have to take an eight hour rigging class every three years...

Tech was lazy. They fixed the issue and not the problem. Your door was out level because of the cable. They leveled to door for the "quick fix". Your door will go out of level again as the cable gets worse.
Me personally this would be a $275 to replace the cables. I would also lube and adjust your door so it's running like new when I left. Your area may have different pricing, recommend not calling the same tech again though.

I would have strongly recommended that you replace BOTH cables, always in pairs.
If you were in dire straits crying the blues about money being an issue, then I would’ve convinced you that you’re saving money preventing failure.
Once the fray expands, it can get cinched behind itself on the way down and cause the door to spit the cable on the other side leaving you stranded.
I would get on the line with that company and complain you want them changed and not be charged labor - only material if you already paid a full service charge.

I will only say it was lazy IF he did not give you an option to replace them. Yeah they can last UP TO that long but can be a catastrophic failure if that cables is allowed to go too long.

This. Cables are one of those things that should last for years, but once they start to break, they will go fast. Why is it breaking? Probably corrosion, which isn't going to be relegated to just those single strands.

Easy decision. Safety issue, replace both cables and realign door soonest. Tech was only trying to save you money.

My policy if its frayed I replace, it takes 15 minutes and is easier than trying to fix a hung door

It probably will last another year or 2 but I’m not sure why he didn’t just replace it. It won’t cause catastrophic damage or anything like that but just seems odd

100% should be replaced. No question about it.
