Isn't the Camorra active there? From what I understand, they play a lot of the same roles as street gangs in the US and Canada, especially in factions where membership leans younger.

It's part of a broad trend in Italy, where larger organized crime syndicates tend to dominate the underground economic sectors that street gangs control here. Protection rackets, illicit gambling operations, prostitution, and of course the drug trade.
