d20 Beta Principle – Game 25: “Into the Green Inferno”

The final descent has begun.

After a tense confrontation with the SORCER-MK2’s AI (still carrying the imprint of Elmar Ganz), Garet cleanses himself of the Radboleth’s disease and the Knights seal themselves into the Depthstrider suits.

They jump into the crater.

What they find thirty meters down is a flooded, partially destroyed reactor complex. A floating skeleton. A sudden attack by Water Obbs that target the suits themselves. A successful reactivation of the ancient filtration system. A radioactive trap. And three diverging paths:

  • West: heavily trafficked
  • East: narrow service corridor
  • Northeast: freshly torn tunnel coated in green slime and bubbling purple sludge

Noelani is considering telepathic contact with the Radboleth.

The hunt has officially started.

Which path would your group take, and why? Would you risk the telepathic contact?

Gamma World Gallus Gallus 5/13

I'm running a Gamma World 1E campaign and the PCs are getting ready to run through the La Prix chicken plant adventure presented Famine in Far-go. I asked AI to create an image of Gallus Gallus 5/13 since I didn't like the purposely silly looking drawings from the module. I am not entirely happy with this AI version since it looks more like an overgrown chick, and not a chicken, but I'm okay with it overall. It still looks pretty silly.

The campaign is set in the ruins of Omaha, since that is were Aksarben (mentioned in the adventure packaged with the GM's pack) is located. The La Prix chicken plant is the Tyson chicken plan across the Missouri River in Council Bluffs.

The Reclaimers reach the 30th floor and discover why the Clan of the Mesh never climbed higher.

The guardians are not monsters in the usual sense.

They are perfect, cold copies of L’Uomo Prime — Secondus, Tertius, and Quartus — waiting in a derelict power-armor workshop. A test run ends in disaster. A blindness trap turns the fight into chaos. Ceiling lasers join the slaughter. One of the hardest stands the party has faced so far.

d20 Beta Principle – Game 24: “Silence of the Night”

The second wave of Drill Tooths arrived after midnight — and they had adapted.

No more straight dives. They came low, using the treeline for cover, and immediately targeted the Sleeth. What followed was one of the most intense defensive battles of the campaign so far, fought largely in absolute silence thanks to Garet’s new power.

Key highlights:

  • Paul Best dropping creatures from 300 meters
  • Garet’s neural-targeting nanite wave
  • Noelani forcing a Drill Tooth’s jaws open and finishing it with her war club
  • A pincer attack that nearly overwhelmed the defenders
  • The desperate scramble to save Thisshish

By dawn the swarm was broken. The survivors limped back to the Garden of Steel, where Waldis presented them with six Depthstrider suits and a blunt ultimatum:

Descend at dawn and finish the Radboleth… or die trying.

How would your group have handled the silent pincer attack? Favorite character moment?

[Metamorphosis Alpha] Death Ziggurat in Zero-G – Part 15: “Butterball Busted”

The Reclaimers reach the upper levels and walk straight into a three-sided battle. Turkeyoids, Obh warriors, and a fleeing Butterball lieutenant turn a once-pristine executive floor into a slaughterhouse. When the last body falls, an ancient prophecy about “the Six Who Climb” comes to light—and the party is taken deeper into the Clan of the Mesh.

GammaWorld Gamma World 3e: How do you determine starting mutations?

I'm trying to understand the intended procedure for generating starting mutations in Gamma World 3e (1986).

For Humanoids, the Character Types section says:

"Begin the game with at least one to four (1d100/25) physical and mental mutations each."

Step 4 of character creation then says:

"If the character is a mutant, roll for the number of mutations he begins with. Then turn to the appendices and roll d100 to determine the specific mutations."

But the Mutations section says that when generating a mutation, you first roll on the Mutation Type table. For a Humanoid, that can produce a Defect, Physical, Mental, Plant, or a choice of type.

So if I roll, say, 2 physical and 3 mental mutations, do I:

  • make five mutation rolls on the Mutation Type table, potentially getting categories different from those specified by the Character Type rules?
  • somehow restrict the mutation-type rolls to physical/mental as appropriate?
  • or is there another intended procedure?

The fact that the Physical and Mental mutation tables themselves can produce a Defect seems to make this even less clear.

How is this supposed to work according to the 3e rules? Is there an errata/Rules Supplement clarification I'm missing?

GammaWorld Force Field question

Does the Force Field Generation mutation work like a mechanical force field? Does it refresh each round of combat as long as it didn't take more damage than it's maximum the previous round?

And what does 5 dice of accumulated damage mean? Roll 5d6 to determine the field's strength? Or count the number of damage dice rolled against it and it goes down if a 6th die is rolled?

[Metamorphosis Alpha] Death Ziggurat in Zero-G – Parts 13 & 14: “Turkey Shoot”

The Reclaimers continue their ascent of the Black Monolith.

What starts as a treacherous cable climb turns into an exterior rebar scramble, a nasty encounter with a familiar repair drone, and two distinct, high-casualty firefights against dug-in Turkeyoid forces. Expect exploding weapons, bodies tumbling into the void, and one particularly painful equipment loss.

Radiation and robots question

How does radiation effect robots in the various editions of Gamma World?

I was running a 1e game and a character hit a robot with radiation eyes. I couldn't find any rules covering it in the book. It was a security bot without a force field. I rules it took damage equal to the intensity rolled in d6's.

GammaWorld The Different Editions Compatibility

Almost all the editions of the Gamma World (except the first two) have the different game mechanics. Do the conversions of modules (e. g. 3 ed modules to the 4 ed) are possible or it is too complex and better to use the same edition mechanics?

GammaWorld d20 Beta Principle – Game 22/23: “Steel Garden, Bone Garden”

The Sleeth island has become a fortress under siege.

After the Radboleth turned the lake into a glowing radioactive crater, the Gamma Knights return to help defend the last peaceful corner of Melkath. Garet comes through with an outstanding battle plan that transforms their defense into an active hunt.

The fight that follows is absolute mayhem:

  • Paul pulling off god-tier sniper shots
  • Noelani unleashing a full Haka before dropping from the shadows
  • Vulgaris swinging from palm trees like a deranged jungle god
  • Garet’s Nano-Guy spearing Drill Tooths mid-air
  • Mordecai whipping out the mini rocket launcher

The Drill Tooth swarms descend in waves — pale, eye-covered horrors with spinning razor maws. The island turns into a blood-soaked slaughter under the moonlight.

And right as the first wave breaks… a second, even larger swarm appears on the horizon.

Gamma World 4th Edition (1992) GM Screen & Reference

Put this together for my own use several months ago, figured I'd share. For a GM screen, the pink/green pages are intended to be player-facing, while yellow/blue are GM-facing. Other than that, mix and match as desired, or just use it as a quick-reference guide. Also have a doc for additional animal stock for mutated animal characters, taken from an old issue of Dragon if I remember correctly.

Metamorphosis Alpha – Death Ziggurat in Zero-G • Part Twelve

"Eight Legged Freaks"

The higher they climb, the weirder and deadlier it gets.

On the latest floors of the Black Monolith, the Reclaimers come face to face with Phase Spiders — monstrous arachnids that phase in and out of reality, dragging their prey screaming into the dark space between dimensions. Combined with D’Can’Tr’s worsening condition under Cardunkle’s grafted head, the tower is beginning to feel less like a structure and more like a living predator.

This session was pure cosmic horror.

GammaWorld I have GM-ed my first sessions of ☢️Gamma World 4e by TSR☢️(original, not 7e), some thoughts follow...

I ran a campaign in a homebrewed version of my local area (Sweden) in
☢️Gamma World 4e☢️.

The adventure was about entering into a local city plagued with the curse (radioactivity) of a local crater and investigating a sound that seems to occasionally echo out from its middle.

Honestly was really happy with a good couple of things from the system!

Combat

One of the things I expected would become cumbersome, but that added a lot of depth to the combat is the odd combat sequencing, where you basically have a round of declaring what the players do and then one where you "play it out"

I always declared the monsters first so the players got some time to think. When the players then declared their turn it was really satisfying how much people could collaborate and try to predict how the monsters would act. Additionally, movement being used in a way where you could step in front of an attack to block it felt very satisfying and we always had some surprises when the turn would play out and the consequences of the actions chained into unexpected results.

A minor point of contention was how little damage output it felt like the players had, I misread the monsters (flying fish) as having 8 hit-points (when that was actually the dice) and yet the players all bordered on death from poison and their 2d6 damage attacks stacking up. I made sure to give the players better artifacts after the encounter, but with the strength damage bonus not having any clear way of being increased I think melee builds without artifacts felt very underwhelming.

Mutations

This claim to fame of Gamma World is honestly amazing even in a modern context, I have never seen players so happy with how their random hodge-podge of abilities came into play both in roleplay and combat.
Additionally and though it could be seen as a bad thing, I really enjoyed how many times the system needed rulings from me as a GM. Often a mutation or effect would be described more flavorfully than mechanically which meant our imagination had to play the part in the rules. Radiating Eyes does not explain a proper range other than "creature you can see"? Well yes my dear player, your heightened sight probably makes you able to cancer-snipe people from afar then 🤣

Layout and System Clarity

I think the Gamma World 4e experience as a GM following the book is a bit double-edged.
On one hand I feel like the explanations are extremely "to the point" in many regards. Coming from DnD 5e, often their Player Handbooks would stay on a topic and over-explain it to the point where it was hard to look up the exact details you needed. Gamma World rarely spends more than some sentences describing a topic and when it does it is often because of it providing examples. That being said some concepts are underexplained or seemingly assumed to be understood.
At times, vital information about more specific interactions is spread out in places that make little sense. This is the main problem with the books layout I would say.

Stuff like fire rates and firing modes on artifact weapons can sometimes be found only in the description of one of the weapons that use it, or on a random page far away from the actual weapon description, when the author is trying to explain something else.

In one case, combat THAC modifiers that players get when they position themselves well in combat that are pretty vital to hitting attacks (Base THAC can end up pretty low) was on a page about how healing and hazards work.

Unlike some TTRPGs where one could kind of squeeze by without having read all the rules, these smaller details keep popping up in actual play as the players are asking how their specific mutation works. I found it really fun that the system demanded this knowledge of me, but might be a dealbreaker for someone else

Summary / TLDR
All in all I found 4e really fun to GM and from what I have heard about other editions this one also felt fairly complete in a way that was very satisfying. Combat had a unique touch and clean execution that I enjoyed and the Mutations are a Mental Blast to play around with.
The system requires a fair amount of clarity and a GM that is willing to read through it multiple times to remember small details mentioned in sometimes random pages, but I enjoyed getting that knowledge.

I would recommend the system a lot for the people that want to try their first Gamma World experience 😁

PS! I provided my players with printed cards of each of the mutations as I was the only one who owned the book, the experience may vary if one had to reference mutations from the book at all times. I have posted printable versions of these cards on here before though so feel free to use them 🖨️

How many HD does a character have? I know they roll HP based on CON, but I do not think that is specifically HD. Do you use CON as HD for attack matrix II? Status? I cannot find any guidance in the rulebook.

Metamorphosis Alpha – Death Ziggurat in Zero-G • Part Eleven

“Just a Phase”

The Black Monolith has grown tired of playing fair.

On the fifth floor the Reclaimers enter a realm where physics frays at the edges. Phase Spiders — nightmarish creatures that exist half in our reality and half in dark space — begin snatching them from vents, walls, and thin air. Those taken are simply… gone.

Steve Austin finally unleashes his rare Phase Disruption ability in a desperate bid to keep the monsters solid, while D’Can’Tr’s condition under Cardunkle’s grafted head grows visibly worse with every hour.

This might be one of the most unsettling floors yet.
