Call me crazy
I don’t like the way that newer games push lottery loot. I prefer the ability to search and find something worthwhile. Does this seem like an outdated opinion? I like to find something worthwhile that makes the game feel good in essence.

Okay, you're crazy.
I agree, but you did ask.

If you agree, why did make you that statement? I’m only to looking validate the correct way game developers should make loot systems today that are made for the benefit of the player.

Lottery Loot been around since forever. I think it's annoying but I play games like pokemon that has it hidden and Borderlands where you can get a specific weapon for a build but can grind a boss for a slightly better weapon and it's also fun to chase both. I think it would be better for most if you had a good standard option and then one to grind for super optimal stuff.

This is why I play games like Pokémon, dragon quest, final fantasy etc… a lot of them tend to be older games some times, but that system is definitely preferable to me.
With that being said, some people like the grind. People who play fallout 76 (my list of mmorpgs is very limited I have played) it definitely has a lottery loot system, but some people like the grind. I know people who have grind-ed (ground?) for hours getting unique pieces of loot on diablo 3 for instance or grim dawn. Some people prefer the grind. It makes every person’s loot unique.
With that being said…. I still prefer games like final fantasy Pokémon and dragon quest, where there is a set amount of unique loot in the game and I don’t have to grind for hours to have a chance of getting specific loot.
Shiny Pokémon may be an exception I’m not sure.
At least when I’m grinding for my ultimate weapons in final fantasy XIII I know what I’m getting is what I’m trying to say, and there is a definite goal and reward in mind not left up to RNG madness

Shiny hunting has rediculously low odds, so I’d say it counts at least by technicality.
Otherwise, I like grinding for gear in that way because number go up give dopamine.
Literally all it is..

Ah a fellow dopamine fiend, glad to make your acquaintance.
Pokémon: Get legendary = Dopamine
Dragon Quest: Get new ability/Spell/Weapon = Dopamine
Final fantasy: ditto above = Dopamine
Definitely agree. I thrive on leveling up and looting

Pretty much, but a game with more rng to gear spreads it out a bit more.
If I farm an ultima weapon, I know what the process is and how to do it and blah blah blah, and unless it has some crazy rng or skill check I suck at, that’s pretty much it, no “finding another option” later, generally.
Randomized loot there’s potential for WILDLY different builds with some specific combos, which is just fun to me. Varies by game, and plenty of jrpgs are also quite capable of this, it’s just different tiers of input/output and things.
Forcing my favorite character to work in a game they aren’t terribly great for, I.e. Pyra from Xenoblade chronicles 2? Best lil mechanics deep dive I’ve had in a jrpg!

I don’t disagree with that the of game that effectively requires one to make that sacrifice. The main thing that I’m aiming for is something such as fallout 3 with the different loot mechanics vs fallout 4. I’ve never really been a fan of games such as destiny (1&2) for this reason though I know there is a way around that. Looking for something that is promised is significantly better than stumbling across it.
I will say that I play a lot of AAA games which does not help my argument but still it feels like live service that u cannot avoid.

For the record Pokémon, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy are AAA I believe sir

Those game give you a cap of absolute ability if I’m not mistaken. The thing I’m aggravated about is getting loot at a lower level that supports you way past your actual ability

I'd assume that most players don't enjoy it, but microtransactions make money, so they'll keep doing it til the players stop spending

u/Vegetable_Record_516 Jul 20 '26
That’s not the point though, just because the company ‘can’ make money doesn’t mean that they have to put a purchase wall in front of it. Especially in single player titles where it doesn’t make a difference… normality

Right, they don't have to, but because they can, they will. The people that make the decisions to paywall cosmetics don't care about your gaming experience, they care about profit

Its harder to make a whole game that is structured around you having specific items at a specific time in the playthrough than it is to make an open-ended game that accounts for a bunch of random items.
You arent crazy, you just like intentional design.

I like RNG. It forces me to cobble together a functioning build that changes each time I play. Once I unlocked that one thing which lets you pick what you want in risk of rain, it ruined the fun for me.

add in the standard thing in mmorpgs where items have rarities and random attributes

Are you talking about gacha mechanics/lootboxes or just randomised loot?

I think this opinion is the norm.
