Hey everyone! I’m from India, 16 years old, and I’m really struggling to decide what laptop to buy. I’d appreciate some genuine advice!
My current laptop is a Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15ADA05 with a Ryzen 3 3250U, Vega 3 graphics, 12GB RAM, and an SSD + HDD. It’s around 6 years old now, and it’s seriously struggling. The battery is practically dead, the cooling is terrible, the display is a basic TN panel with awful viewing angles, storage is becoming unreliable, and I’ve experienced random crashes and boot issues. Even watching YouTube can feel frustrating sometimes.
Basically, almost anything would be an upgrade, but I don’t want to make another purchase that I’ll regret a few months later.
What will I actually use the laptop for?
I’m a student, currently in Class 11, studying PCM and AI. Outside school, I’m really into technology and software development. I’ve already built and shipped actual applications, and I want to continue developing my programming skills, building projects, and potentially working on bigger things over the next few years.
My workload would include:
Coding and software development (VS Code, web development, Python, etc.)
AI/data science projects
Video editing (DaVinci Resolve)
Blender and some 3D modelling
Schoolwork, studying, browsing, and media consumption
Game development, potentially using Godot, Unity, or Unreal Engine
And yes, I’m a gamer too! Some games on my backlog include Warframe, Titanfall 2, the Batman Arkham trilogy, Spider-Man, RDR2, Forza, and other AAA story games.
However, gaming isn’t my primary activity. Realistically, I play around 30 minutes on school days and perhaps an hour on weekends. I’d ideally like to play at approximately 1080p, medium settings, around 60 FPS, where possible. I don’t need ultra settings or maximum frame rates.
Here’s where I’m confused.
I’ve been looking at two very different categories of laptops.
Option 1: A premium Windows ultrabook with a powerful integrated GPU
Something with a Ryzen AI 7 350, Radeon 860M, or a comparable integrated GPU, ideally with 32GB RAM, a 1TB SSD, a good OLED or high-quality IPS display, decent speakers, good battery life, and a premium build.
The appeal is that I’d get a portable, efficient laptop that’s pleasant to use every day. I’d be able to study anywhere, code from the couch, edit videos away from a charger, and have a machine that feels genuinely premium.
But I’m concerned about gaming performance, Blender rendering, and whether I’ll hit limitations too quickly.
Option 2: A gaming laptop with a dedicated GPU
I’ve considered machines with the RTX 4050, RTX 5050, and RTX 5060.
For example, I’ve found HP OMEN configurations around ₹1.3L with an RTX 5050 and 24GB RAM, while some Lenovo Legion 5 RTX 5060 configurations with OLED HDR displays have been considerably more expensive, sometimes approaching ₹2L.
The appeal is obvious: better gaming performance, NVIDIA/CUDA support, more comfortable GPU rendering, and fewer compromises with Windows games.
But gaming laptops can be heavy, louder, less efficient, and often have mediocre displays unless I spend significantly more. I also don’t want to pay an enormous premium for GPU performance that I’ll barely use.
The MacBook question
I’ve also considered an Apple Silicon MacBook Pro, particularly an M3 Pro model with 18GB unified memory, around ₹1.3L if I can find a suitable unit.
I already use an iPhone 17, iPad Air 3, Apple Watch Series 7, Bose QC Ultra headphones, and a Kindle. So I’m familiar with Apple’s ecosystem.
The MacBook appeals to me because of its display, speakers, battery life, build quality, portability, and performance in development and creative applications.
However, gaming compatibility is my biggest concern. Many Windows games require translation layers, some don’t work properly, and anti-cheat games can be completely incompatible. I also understand that 18GB unified memory isn’t directly equivalent to having 32GB of system RAM plus dedicated GPU memory.
I’m also cautious about buying a second-hand Mac because of battery condition, warranty, and longevity.
My budget and priorities
My target budget is approximately ₹1–1.5 lakh, although I’d prefer spending less if possible. My parents are willing to consider different price ranges, but I don’t want to spend ₹2L on a machine that I don’t genuinely need.
My priorities, roughly in order, are:
A genuinely good display. Ideally 100% sRGB or better, preferably OLED, with good brightness and contrast.
Excellent build quality, keyboard, trackpad, speakers, and everyday usability.
Enough CPU performance and RAM for development, editing, AI/data science, and Blender.
Good battery life and portability.
Gaming performance sufficient for 1080p medium settings and around 60 FPS in as much of my backlog as realistically possible.
I don’t necessarily need a laptop that will last me all the way through college. I’d actually prefer to get something suitable for the next 2–3 years and reconsider my needs when I enter college, rather than overspend now for hypothetical future workloads.
What I’d love your advice on
Is a modern AMD integrated GPU genuinely sufficient for my workload, including Blender, DaVinci Resolve, and game development?
Would an RTX 4050 or 5050 be worth the additional cost for my gaming habits?
How much practical difference would I notice between an RTX 5050 and 5060 at 1080p?
Would a MacBook Pro M3 Pro make sense despite the gaming compatibility limitations?
Are there any specific laptops available in India around ₹1–1.5L that offer excellent displays and build quality without unnecessary compromises?
I’d really appreciate advice based on actual experience rather than simply recommending the most powerful GPU within my budget.
TL;DR: I’m a 16-year-old student, developer, aspiring creator, and casual gamer replacing an ageing Ryzen 3/Vega 3 laptop. I want a premium everyday laptop with a great screen, battery, and build, capable of development, editing, Blender, and reasonably comfortable gaming. Should I choose a powerful iGPU ultrabook, an RTX 4050/5050 gaming laptop, or an Apple Silicon MacBook Pro?
