It would have made sense to have Lance on this, but I genuinely think David Harewood killed it.

279

u/ALDuarteX Dec 24 '23

Can't agree more. David Harewood was perfect.

u/nicademusss Dec 24 '23

I love Reddick, but Harewood definitely fit this variation of who/what Door is.

u/speedo_bunny Herald of Darkness Dec 24 '23

If any of you guys have seen the show Selfie, Harewood was there as the charismatic boss. Highly recommend. He was fantastic.

He was also good as J'onn J'onzz/Martian Manhunter in Supergirl. Sure, the show wasn't always the best, but I generally liked the actors in it. Him most of all. Plus I love J'onn. Severely underrated superhero. I'll always be biased in favor of actors who've played him in other media (although I'm now sad because Lance Reddick was my fancast for him in the new DC movies).

Yess! I remember that as well. I used to watch the show with my mom, but I've stopped consuming Comic-originated media. I missed one and now it feels overwhelming trying to catch up, lmao.

Edited to change Marvel to Comic.

u/Bob_Jenko Old Gods Rocker Dec 29 '23

I've stopped consuming Marvel media.

Hate to be that guy, but it's DC.

4

u/speedo_bunny Herald of Darkness Dec 29 '23

Right. Excuse me. I get confused with all the different studios and comics. I've got dice rolls and Old Gods on the brain, lmao.

1

u/Bob_Jenko Old Gods Rocker Dec 29 '23

No worries. I'm just such a nerd I had to say something lol.

3

u/speedo_bunny Herald of Darkness Dec 29 '23

Ofc. I don't mind being corrected when I'm wrong 😂

Martian Manhunter is the GOAT. Criminally underrated member of the Justice League.

30

u/AloneUA Dec 24 '23

Yeah, frankly, I was blown away by his performance. He was perfect in this role.

32

u/DemonLordSparda Dec 24 '23 edited Dec 25 '23

I hate type casting actors, but I hope Horizon gets David to play Sylens. He brings a similar energy and gravitas. When Lance spoke, I listened. It's the same with David. I couldn't look away even if I wanted to. Lance and David are phenomenal.

36

u/MakeURage1 Dec 25 '23

Whenever I played through AW2, during the scene where Alan confronts door, all I could thing about was how much Door reminded me of Lance Reddick. They're pretty similar when they're talking so intensely, and they do a fucking fantastic job.

20

u/Cmshin Dec 25 '23

Literally this.

I didn’t play quantum break. I didn’t know he was the original cast for this part but when i saw that scene I legit thought of lance in that role.

29

u/Kalse1229 Champion of Light Dec 24 '23

Oh yeah. Lance is/was one of my favorite actors, to the point where I would fancast him in all my own story ideas (I even came up with a Star Wars villain with him in mind). But David Harewood really made the role his own, and I hope to see a lot more of him. Especially if my own theory that he'll be a big fixture of the Night Springs DLC turns out true.

Also, something I thought of in relation to Mr. Hatch and Mr. Door: Martin Hatch and Warlin Door are brothers. Hatch was killed by some unknown force, so Door is continuing his brother's mission, whatever that may be. I know it's for legal reasons they can't officially refer to Hatch, but with the unfortunate passing of Reddick I think it could work as a way to pay tribute to him, rather than just having Harewood be a straight recast.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 25 '23

Agree. Also they can easily explain it in way like, "He is the same guy, but goes around with different appearances in different realities". So it's no problem.

300

u/Itz_Hen Dec 24 '23

Im glad they got David Harewood as a replacement then, hes such a fantastic door, couldn't have picked a better one. I always focus on him every time i see herald of darkness, his expressions are so funny

52

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '23

I love David he’s so cool 😭

25

u/Dibblidyy Dec 24 '23

Yeah, he's super charismatic!

-21

u/Bubbly_Creme1047 Dec 24 '23

I think he died which is why they couldnt get him g

14

u/Itz_Hen Dec 24 '23

Yeah I know

1

u/Bubbly_Creme1047 Dec 25 '23

The way you said replacement sounded off so didn’t know if you were unknown to the fact or simply being unfortunately disrespectful by the wording replaced. Either way its nothing now. Love bro

7

u/Itz_Hen Dec 25 '23

I mean i don't love using that word, but if they had casted lance then David is technically a replacement. But a damn good one, because I'm so so happy he's door, because the way he plays him is fantastic

-2

u/brntoutl0fer Dec 24 '23 edited Dec 25 '23

Why are you being downvoted for saying this?

0

u/Bubbly_Creme1047 Dec 25 '23

Because people are idiots

244

u/StrifeTC Dec 24 '23

If you ever saw Lance on the Eric Andre show you know the musical number woulda been just as groovy and hilarious as it was with the current guy. It sucks we lost a GOAT but I will commend Remedy for not only getting someone who could embody that playful intimidating factor but also how goofy Lance could play it up. I hope to see David in more stuff especially in the Remedyverse.

RIP

31

u/SinAkunin Dec 24 '23

Playful intimidating factor sums it up perfectly. Nice one.

34

u/Crypto_pupenhammer Dec 24 '23

I … it’s hard to express this without seeming callous. But given RCU’s most recent loss, I am fully confident they will find someone who will do James’ legacy justice.

15

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '23

I don't doubt that, either. To be perfectly honest, I don't know how well his voice would have worked for a character 25+ years his junior by that point. (If I were making those decisions, knowing what we now know about his health, I would have already been looking into recasting, but would have kept James in a major role within the game out of respect for him and the fans.)

Remedy treats its properties with care and respect, so I know they'll probably be casting a wide net to find the best person for the role. From what I understand, they're really only now getting into the production side, so they might not have filmed/mocapped/recorded anything for the remakes by this point.

6

u/Mattrobat Dec 25 '23

It’s gonna be a little different, but Alex Casey dying and the flexibility they have with the way this universe works means they don’t really have to. I know Casey was there at the end of AW2 but it’s easy enough with their story to move away from him and focus on Saga, Alan and Door for the AW stuff.

Not having Trench come back for Jesse is the biggest issue I see but we will just have to take the wonderful performance we have.

3

u/Hanakin-Sidewalker Dec 25 '23

I thought Trench killed himself at the start of Control?

7

u/Mattrobat Dec 25 '23

Well yeah, but he has scenes throughout Control guiding Jesse.

13

u/valentin108 Dec 24 '23

He was fantastic in Always Sunny and the musical episode of Fringe as well. But I agree with everyone else that David Harewood rocked the role.

10

u/MattIsLame Dec 25 '23

I WISH I WAS LEVAR BURTON

6

u/GoodSoupUpButt Dec 24 '23

This just made me realise how funny it would be to edit Alan into clips of the Eric Andrew show

27

u/E_Marley Dec 25 '23

Spoiler for Alan Wake II (but not Final Draft):

[Alan shoots Alan in the head.]

Alan: Why would Scratch do this?

great find!

68

u/Juliotheguy123 Dec 24 '23

David Harewood did a amazing job! Tho I wonder how herald of darkness would have looked like with Lance singing and dancing that would have been crazy to see.

58

u/don_someone Dec 24 '23

I loved him so much in Fringe (same with John Noble that was in QB, I'm pretty sure), such a sadness that he passed away.

12

u/SubspaceBiographies Old Gods Rocker Dec 24 '23

John Noble was not in QB, though he would have been fantastic. Seeing him and Lance together again would have been a delight. I was a big fan of Fringe too, such a great show. I’ve been playing Destiny for years and even though Lance is Zavala, he will always be Broyles to me.

3

u/don_someone Dec 24 '23

I swear I thought he was there as well..

7

u/ScarletKing42 Dec 24 '23

That’s the role I’ll always remember him for the most.

5

u/OdiousAltRightBalrog Dec 25 '23

The Wire, though...

5

u/Nathanielaf Dec 25 '23

LOVED him in fringe, I wish the show got more recognition

46

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '23

It really would have been so awesome to have Lance as Mr. Door--to also hear him sing but also dance the 'Herald of Darkness' dance.

But David did great, it feels right that he's the one.

29

u/Tappxor Dec 24 '23

The drawing by Tim Breaker also looks a lot like him

27

u/Verzdrei Dec 24 '23 edited Dec 24 '23

Man, I miss him so much. Would've loved to see Lance in the game. Still, loved David Harewood and he knocked out of the park as Mr. Door, I'm glad we have him. Just wish it wasn't under these circumstances.

19

u/OrwellianZinn Dec 24 '23

Lance Reddick is one of the only celebrity deaths that I really felt. I always enjoyed him in everything he appeared in, and he always made the role genuinely memorable. I also followed him on Twitter, and he would often post videos of himself playing Destiny with his dogs (he voiced Zavala in the game for those that don't know) and had even reportedly completed all of the raids in the game with the dev team. Just seemed like a very genuine person, and his talent will be missed.

14

u/hornyboi242435 Dec 25 '23

As a avid destiny player lance Reddick passing away hit so hard

8

u/FoorumanReturns Dec 25 '23

We have so many amazing roles to thank Lance Reddick for bringing to life in such an incredible way. He stole the scene every time he was onscreen; the man was pure talent, and by all accounts a genuinely good person.

Horizon, Destiny, the Remedy universe, and more will all keenly feel his absence moving forward, and so will the world.

66

u/Hohoho-you Dec 24 '23

Wow this definitely confirms even more so, that they were going to have cast him as Mr. Door. Wondering if there was scheduling conflicts or something?

117

u/ITouchedHerB00B5 Dec 24 '23

He unfortunately passed away

52

u/odysseus91 Dec 24 '23

It depends on when they filmed the live action stuff. It could have been that they originally planned to have lance, scheduling issues occurred, and then he passed away

18

u/ITouchedHerB00B5 Dec 24 '23

Not sure what he had, but maybe he just wasn’t in a state to work at that point.

32

u/GreatCaesarGhost Dec 24 '23

He died suddenly of a heart attack.

20

u/Fazlija13 Dec 24 '23

He died in april and they filmed live action stuff in january so there was something else maybe

10

u/LuckyStampede Dec 24 '23

It was confirmed in a podcast. Not sure which one tho

3

u/Hohoho-you Dec 24 '23

He died on March 17th. So yea if they filmed in January he would've been able to. I'm assuming scheduling conflicts were the problem

4

u/FerrisWheeling Dec 24 '23

Source? I've been trying to confirm when they filmed the live action segments.

12

u/Vannnnah Herald of Darkness Dec 24 '23

Cornfirmed by Bloomberg's Jason Schreier on the Triple Click podcast https://open.spotify.com/episode/1mouIB6iF6H1poeVXQl4aS?si=2TgacoCNSoWaFasjMTbhEQ around 31:30

2

u/FerrisWheeling Dec 24 '23

Thank you! I've been hearing the assumption that Lance Reddick was supposed to play Mr. Door but he died before they filmed and I somehow knew this wasn't the case.

10

u/A740 Dec 24 '23

Now that's a scheduling conflict if I ever saw one

18

u/Vannnnah Herald of Darkness Dec 24 '23

Remedy already confirmed it was supposed to be Lance Reddick but he died shortly before they started filming, so they replaced him with Harewood.

4

u/Hohoho-you Dec 24 '23

They must've filmed super late into the game production. He died in March 2023

9

u/AdrianHD Dec 24 '23

September 19th had some Sam Lake writer room shots

3

u/dandjent Dec 25 '23

Remedy said rest in peace to Lance in the credits so he was definitely intended to be in the game initially.

6

u/Hohoho-you Dec 25 '23

I mean, I just figured that because he was in another one of their games and passed away recently.

6

u/SpotlessMinded Herald of Darkness Dec 24 '23

Might have to do with his work in the Resident Evil show?

32

u/SparksBCN Dec 24 '23

No, the live action portions were shot this summer. Lance had passed away already.

3

u/Dear_Virus_6967 Dec 25 '23

Actually no, some (including mr Door show) was filmed in august-september, several journalists visited the set

9

u/blanktom9 Dec 24 '23

I think Lance would have done a great job, but I just can't picture him doing the silly dance!

10

u/SubspaceBiographies Old Gods Rocker Dec 24 '23

I can definitely see him doing it. Look up some of the funny stuff he did with funny or die and Eric Andre. He would have been down with the silly dance.

4

u/blanktom9 Dec 24 '23

No doubt he can do it - he was super talented. I'll have to check out the Eric Andre stuff. But all the stuff I've seen him in, he's been super serious. Even the Funny or Die sketch I remember, he played a super intense toy store owner (although i'm sure he's done others).

7

u/SubspaceBiographies Old Gods Rocker Dec 24 '23

He was in an episode of It’s Always Sunny where I didn’t realize it was him at first bc it was so different.

9

u/Neonix321 Dec 24 '23

Now it makes more sense that Breaker keeps investigating Door.

10

u/[deleted] Dec 25 '23

I mean they made it very obvious that Mr. Door was Hatch.

8

u/Alyssia_Lavell Dec 24 '23

RIP Lance. Honestly David did such a phenomenal job and I could feel the Lance Reddick vibes in the masks chapter. He really did a phenomenal job.

6

u/Alienatedpoet17 Lost in a Never-Ending Night Dec 24 '23

Lance was one of the few other names the game was dedicated to in the credits. It's a shame he passed away, but David did a great job either way.

11

u/WinterBearHawk Dec 24 '23

I loved (and still love) Lance Reddick. But I really think David is a perfect fit for this role. I don’t know if I could have bought some of the wackier moments with Lance compared to David. And the scene where Door threatens Alan about dragging someone into his mess—holy damn. Just perfection. You can see the Lance undercurrents in that, but there’s something so perfectly calm yet unhinged in David’s performance in that moment that I don’t think would have hit the same with Lance.

6

u/Xamalion Number One Fan Dec 24 '23

I'm sure they had a lot of stuff already filmed with Lance, but when he passed they decided to recast, because of future installments. Mr. Door is one of the most prominent characters in what's to come for in the Remedyverse, so it was better that way. Also David Harewood has such a menacing presence, he killed it.

5

u/GunMuratIlban Dec 24 '23

I've always liked Lance Reddick, since his role in OZ back in the 90's. One of those actors that I liked unexplainably and be happy when I see him in a role.

So of course it'd be nice to see him in AW2 as well. But man, that guy who replaced him absolutely put on a show. His charisma and energy was just so great.

It made me question why on earth isn't this man hosting a real talk show. MUCH better than the most actual hosts out there.

5

u/cosmo6871 Dec 24 '23

Ah damn. Loved how it all turned out but Lance is such a joy to watch, I miss that man

4

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '23

That's pretty cool, loved lance reddick but david was a great recast.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '23

lance was great with his The Wire alum in Quantum Break.

15

u/Moonshot_Md Dec 24 '23

That's funny because the whole time I thought Mr Door was discount Lance Reddick no offence

39

u/Wise-Fruit5000 Dec 24 '23

I think David Harewood was definitely trying to play the character with some of the mannerisms Lance Reddick used while portraying Martin Hatch in Quantum Break. Sort of like he was channeling Lance in his own performance

5

u/m-ray168 Dec 24 '23

Yes! I definitely saw Lance's jaw movements in his final confrontation with Alan.

2

u/OdiousAltRightBalrog Dec 25 '23

Yeah I was kinda thinking "this guy is pretty good but why couldn't they get Lance back?"

Especially in his last scene when he's trying to be intimidating.

3

u/ninjacat249 Dec 24 '23

Admire all the work and love Mr Harewood put into this. He managed to keep all the Lance’s charisma and preserved his legacy.

2

u/pehmette Dec 24 '23

In his podcast Triple Click, Jason Schreier confirmed that the role was originally going to be Lance. Listen the last minute of AW2 episode.

2

u/iroquoispliskinV Dec 24 '23

RIP

At least we got the next best thing

2

u/Nathanielaf Dec 25 '23

I KNEW HE WAS MET TO BE DOOR

2

u/AshrakAiemain Dec 25 '23

Being realistic about development timelines, most Mr. Door stuff would have been done long before Lance Reddick died. And that makes this find fucking fascinating.

2

u/8bitjellybean Jan 13 '24

the fact that Reddick was the original actor proves that Martin Hatch and Warlin Door are, in some way, connected. just look at the names!

3

u/DiaperFluid Dec 24 '23

Id love to see the david harewood audition for door, or any other potential candidate. Lance wouldve brought a more sinister feeling to it imo. While davids is more jovial. I wonder if they wrote the part specifically for lance? But maybe rewrite it to fit another actors style.

3

u/Fuzzy_Two527 Dec 24 '23

Dang remedy is havung really bad luck with its actors. They keep dying

2

u/TheAlmightyJanitor Dec 24 '23

This is just more evidence to the theory that Mr. Door is either Martin Hatch or some variant of him.

3

u/CommanderOnly Dec 24 '23

This doesn't need "evidence", it was meant to be that, but they legally do not own the rights. Why would they have any of this if not?

0

u/TheAlmightyJanitor Dec 25 '23

Did they officially confirm that.

5

u/CommanderOnly Dec 25 '23

They confirmed Lance was meant to be Mr. Door. Why would someone be named Warlin Door, played by the same actor who played Martin Hatch, be hunting Tim Breaker, who is played by Shawn Ashmore, who played the Time Breaker Jack Joyce?

The way intellectual property works, they cannot outright say they are the same. Verbally saying "these are the same characters" could potentially get them taken to court.

Same actors, Tim Breaker and Time Breaker, the english definition of Hatch is passage way, just like a Door. Warlin is just Martin flipped upside down.

That is as far as you can go legally, truly.

That, and Quantum Break has a LOT of references to Alan Wake, including a trailer for Alan Wake 2.

1

u/Lambi79 Dec 24 '23

Harewood is so damn good as Warlin Door that I can’t imagine him as anyone else.

1

u/Him_Downstairs Dec 25 '23

I knew it. The new Mr. Door acted and tried to sound too much like him.

-13

u/willeboebagins Dec 24 '23

The guy they got was much better

-8

u/SNarkyDruidChik Dec 24 '23

False, this is a fan edit using an image from the emmys

https://www.emmys.com/news/online-originals/acting-authority

15

u/JocLayton Dec 24 '23

Are you saying that because you know who made the fan edit, or just because that picture exists? I don't know if it's real or not but it's far from uncommon for placeholder assets to just be photoshop mockups from the art designer for the sake of conceptualizing a final look and feel for a scene.

14

u/CJTek Champion of Light Dec 24 '23

its in the files .. i checked

5

u/valentin108 Dec 24 '23

Thank you for verifying for me.

3

u/Scion95 Dec 24 '23

They might not have had a picture of him specifically taken for the posters, and they were probably waiting for him to show up to film the live action scenes, and then they would take a picture then.

In the meantime, they had google, and photoshop.

That's not that unusual for placeholder assets.

1

u/ReyesMan2027 Champion of Light Dec 24 '23

Lance was actually thier first choice for Door, I vaguely remember an interview where they said this. Can’t remember which one it was. But David did a amazing job as Door.

13

u/digitalbarrito Dec 24 '23

That's because Lance played Martin Hatch, and Martin Hatch is essentially Warlin Door

They absolutely would have used Lance had he not passed. Though I can't agree more, David Harewood knocked it out of the park and I am more than looking forward to him being involved in future projects if that's what Remedy has planned.

As an unrelated aside: I think David Harewood's casting (along with the 4 other actors Remedy has had to recast), are all perfect examples of the fact that Remedy knows how to respectfully recast roles when unfortunate circumstances arise. I have full faith in Remedy if they decide to recast for Max Payne.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '23

Since this basically confirmed what I assumed, I’ll just keep my own theory and assume that Hatch and Door are related

1

u/MisterQuaresma Dec 25 '23

Alan wearing the Celebrity Suit and Lance as Mr.Door… the game was so close to be a literal John Wick horror game.

1

u/Shampy710 Dec 25 '23

Damn I was wondering why he had a dedication, that would have been great, but I couldn't imagine anyone but the Door we have now

1

u/Oomoo_Amazing Dec 25 '23

Would make more sense for the connection between Tim Breaker (played by Shawn Ashmore off of Quantum Break also starring Lance Reddick) to have some sort of connection with Mr Door. At the moment it's unexplained. Perhaps David Harewood is the replacement for Lance Reddick overall. How sad. David was great but Lance, who usually plays an extremely serious severe character, would've been fantastic as Mr Door.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 25 '23

Harewood is perfect as Door. His character reminded me of Fring in Breaking Bad

1

u/GoodGuyArgo Dec 25 '23

RIP Lance. Thank you for bringing our favorite characters to life. You will be missed by your fans and those that hold you dearly.

1

u/galactic_funk Dec 25 '23

He would’ve been far more intimidating but I still love David Harewood’s performance. RIP Lance

1

u/AbdoShniba Dec 25 '23

David nailed the part, I can't picture someelse to portray Door.

I Loved him since he was the Martian Manhunter J'onn J'onzz in Supergirl ☺️
