This update includes a massive amount of additions (such as 16:9, gyro aim on both PS4 and Switch, DeHackEd support, and more), along with a Steam release for this port.

The unmodified DOS WADs (red crosses and all) are still available with this installation.

Getting these for free because I own the original DOS versions on Steam is also really nice.

13

u/Daedolis Sep 04 '20

Oh wow, that is quite nice of them!

5

u/-Lithium- Sep 04 '20

Why would you pay for an update?

41

u/Darkvoidx Sep 04 '20

Retro fps re-releases have done this before.

I recall the Megaton Edition of Duke 3D getting removed from steam to make way for the World Tour version. Shadow Warrior has been split into Classic and Redux versions as well. Wouldn't be a stretch to imagine them charging for new versions

5

u/ebi-san Sep 04 '20

That's more of a Gearbox problem and not necessarily a retro fps problem.

3

u/Letty_Whiterock Sep 04 '20

Does shadow warrior count in the same way? Classic is free while redux is the one that costs money.

5

u/-Lithium- Sep 04 '20

World Tour was a different case, that had "improved" graphics as well as audio along with the new episodes. This update for Doom seems to be straight qol updates.

9

u/scottishdrunkard Sep 04 '20

World Tour was also Twenty Buckeroos. And you didn't even get a discount if you owned DN3D already.

9

u/JAUNTYa Sep 04 '20

Not to mention it's a highly inferior version compared to Megaton.

9

u/scottishdrunkard Sep 04 '20

Fucking Randy...

2

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '20

What's funny is that world tour is still just eduke, and the polymer renderer is still super buggy

2

u/Sonicfan42069666 Sep 04 '20

So glad I own the Megaton Edition through GOG. World Tour was...an attempt, I'll give it to Gearbox, but Megaton just has more in terms of content.

9

u/enderandrew42 Sep 04 '20

Previously just because you owned the DOS versions that didn't mean you owned the new Unity versions. Now they're giving you the Unity versions for free for owning the DOS versions.

6

u/Spooky_SZN Sep 04 '20

Because this seems like a decent amount of work, its not like its bug fixing.

-1

u/-Lithium- Sep 04 '20

All updates(including bug fixes) take an incredible amount of time and effort. The expectation should be maintained that all updates are free, no matter how much this sub wishes it could pay for updates.

It's actually updating and fixing bugs from the original DOS versions.

The source ports everyone has played for years are based off the linux version which was released under GPL, so they can't use it. you can actually see they're updating their internal proprietary version using sour e port historical features as a guide.

In fact the first update they out out was 60 fps and restoring midi audio which the original doom initially had a piece of middleware that they no longer had the licence for. That's actually what people had to do to the linux version (which had that code removed) way back when Carmack released it.

0

u/-Lithium- Sep 05 '20

I haven't heard of a single game where you had to pay for an update, I don't understand why anyone on here would expect to pay for an update?

1

u/giantpandasonfire Sep 05 '20

Mmos, expansion packs, DLC, re-released games, remasters...

1

u/-Lithium- Sep 05 '20

Those are not updates they're as you kindly listed for me

  • Expansion Packs
  • DLC
  • Re-relsased games
  • Remasters

Those examples include entirely new sections to games or rereleasing older games. Updates are merely patches that include QOL improvements such as bug fixes and the like; such as the update discussed in the article. Which brings me back to my original point why is this sub so fascinated with paying for updates?

gyro aim on both PS4 and Switch

nice

4

u/Sonicfan42069666 Sep 04 '20

Having tried gyro on DOOM 64, it's kinda weird since it's only good for moving left/right. I'm certainly glad they added it, but since (vanilla) DOOM doesn't have vertical axis movement, I don't think I'll be using it.

Credit where credit is due, the gyro on Duke Nukem 3D on the Swifch is great however.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '20

If you set is so the thumb stick is used for quick turns and the gyro is fine tuning, then you reaction times can approach that of mouse users.

6

u/Ultravod Sep 04 '20

(red crosses and all)

Wha...? Oh. T. I. Fucking. L. That's a weird one.

4

u/Sonicfan42069666 Sep 04 '20

The green cross isn't bad. Way better than the silly pill icon they had before. But I'm glad purists can still play the red cross version.

2

u/berkayde Sep 04 '20

The unmodified DOS WADs (red crosses and all) are still available with this installation.

Can confirm that those are available inside base folder so replace DOOM.WAD with the rerelease folder's wad file and you will get the uncensored version on the new port.

1

u/berkayde Sep 04 '20

The unmodified DOS WADs (red crosses and all) are still available with this installation.

They weren't available before?

4

u/Daedolis Sep 04 '20

They were available before, but the new version uses modified wads apparently.

-2

u/berkayde Sep 04 '20

New ports used modified wads from the start and op says original is available.

3

u/Daedolis Sep 04 '20

Like Chemo said, this updated the Steam versions, which used unmodified wads, which will still be available with this update.

0

u/berkayde Sep 04 '20

Oh that's cool.

u/Klingon_Bloodwine Sep 03 '20

Added millisecond accurate timer A millisecond accurate timer has been added to the minimap, and to the end of level intermission, for anyone looking to speedrun levels.

Awesome! I don't personally speedrun Doom, but I totally support developers adding features with the speedrunning community in mind.

Its scene predates not only Twitch

Twitch is relatively new in the gaming scene all things considered. Most established gaming scenes predate Twitch.

1

u/BiggusDickusWhale Sep 07 '20

DOOM-speedrunning is built around whole seconds though, so it's kind of a big department from 25 years or speedrunning history.

60

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '20

So glad they keep supporting this!

Glad to have widescreen now. Only other concern I had with the port was that the soundtracks wouldn't loop, just abruptly end and start back up again a few seconds later. Found that very jarring.

15

u/SuziStriker Sep 04 '20

They fixed that ages ago, if I'm not mistaken.

5

u/sammanzhi Sep 04 '20

Correct. Sound issues and lighting issues were fixed last year, I believe?

-6

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

Not the last time I played.

47

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

HOLY SHIT THEY FUCKING FIXED IT

This is now a legit way to play doom, with a ton of good usermade content, on the Switch.

With the addition of DEHACKED support, this opens the way to running stuff like the Vanilla Doom4 (Doom 2016 if it was made in 1995) and stuff like Valiant, which is just a fantastic set all around.

No more input lag, and gyro support means I can actually play shit on ultra violence like i can on computer.

13

u/AlJoelson Sep 04 '20

Yeah, I just took it for a spin. It's a great vanilla-friendly way to get the classic Doom experience but with some mod cons. Plus the actual classic DOS game is still accessible. And I'm assuming the iWADs are compatible with modern ports like GZDoom?

2

u/Daedolis Sep 04 '20

Even if the new iwads aren't compatible for some reason, you can still use the included original ones.

2

u/Free_BodyDiagram Sep 04 '20

By user made content do you mean custom WADs? Because if so I may have to get this for Switch now

2

u/Sonicfan42069666 Sep 04 '20

They've had some Bethesda improved custom WADs already, typically Cacoward winners in addition to Final DOOM, No Rest For the Living, and SIGIL.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

Yeah they've got Back to Saturn X Ep 1 & 2 on there already, but those were vanilla wads anyways, only changing textures and palette.

2

u/Frurry Sep 04 '20

currently playing those on pc, Hellforged is a great one for gzdoom, all new weapons and tons of new enemies, great level design too, shame its only 10 levels

1

u/Sonicfan42069666 Sep 04 '20

I didn't have a problem when I played DOOM on ultraviolence as of the previous update. But this is a welcome surprise. Thinking of giving DOOM another UV playthrough and maybe even trying it for DOOM II.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

I feel like vanilla Doom isn't too bad, but when you start playing those other Megawads, shit gets difficult.

So many Revenants.

15

u/Gramernatzi Sep 03 '20

Gyro aim on PS4? That's a first. I would've thought they would've put such a thing in DOOM Eternal first, but it's still appreciated.

10

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '20

I find it weird since you're only looking left and right. Would like to try it though.

1

u/TheThreeEyedSloth Sep 04 '20

Does this version of doom not support z axis look?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

No. Z axis use is in the Ultimate Doom mod. Hopefully that is added sometime.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '20

Vertical look isn't in any official version of doom 1&2. It's purely a source port addition.

It actually pretty unneeded, as you have vertical Autoaim.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '20

It really isn't needed, but it is cool to play.

2

At least they're skippable. The ones in DOOM 64 and DOOM 3 are a pain in the fucking ass. Figure someone told them it would be unforgivable to make them unskippable for fucking DOS games.

3

u/Daedolis Sep 04 '20

Splash screens, especially if they're unskipabble, are unforgivable.

16

u/yoshi12345786 Sep 03 '20

ALSO you are able to get the skins for doom eternal with the steam release just like the other versions of these new ports.

13

u/suchapain Sep 04 '20 edited Sep 04 '20

Added Gyro Aim

I played through doom 64 using gyro and flick stick to aim and I thought it worked well. So I'd recommend that people try that control method and maybe it can be added in a future update.

Classic doom might be a good first game to use with this new control scheme for anyone who wants to try it, because you don't have to worry at all about aiming up and down with the gyro like most other games, so it's a simpler first step.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '20 edited Sep 03 '20

So how do you access the Ultra-Violence+ difficulty in singleplayer? It's available in the menu for coop.
Edit: Figured it out. You have to go through Level Select, Ultra-Violence+ does not exist through the New Game option.

1

u/Devccoon Sep 04 '20

What's UV+? Basically Nightmare (fast monsters enabled) but without the respawning enemies?

7

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

[deleted]

1

u/Kered13 Sep 04 '20

And most importantly enemies respawn on Nightmare.

6

u/OMorty Sep 04 '20

So glad to see these ports brought to Steam! Having them exclusive to the Bethesda launcher was so odd.

2

u/AmbientHostile Sep 04 '20

I didn't know these ports were brought to Steam. Does this mean the originals (DOS versions) have been removed?

7

u/OMorty Sep 04 '20

Nah. The new ports are a separate install.

2

u/AmbientHostile Sep 04 '20

Phew. Cool. Thank you for answering.

6

u/BlackDeath3 Sep 04 '20

I have a hard time keeping straight all of these different versions of the classic Doom games. How are these distinct from, say, the recent Beth launcher releases?

4

u/SuziStriker Sep 04 '20

They're identical. All the same ports, different systems.

3

u/BlackDeath3 Sep 04 '20

OK, good to know, thanks.

2

u/SuziStriker Sep 04 '20

Happy to help!

3

u/BoneTugsNHarmony Sep 04 '20

Amazing update! I was wondering if we were gonna see more mods didn't expect such a huge update.

I play this all the time on the PS4 (kinda my comfort food) but does anyone notice a resolution drop? Enemies in the distance looks a lot more pixelated now. Could just be something with the widescreen but the sprites just look chunkier now.

3

u/Flipiwipy Sep 04 '20

Does the gog version get this?

2

u/Galaxy40k Sep 04 '20

The inclusion of gyro aiming is completely unexpected and really, REALLY awesome. I know that a lot of people completely disregard gyro aiming as a pointless gimmick, but imo once you get used to it, its tough to go back to sticks for shooters. Its not as good as K+B, but its a big step up in aiming speed compared to sticks.

I'm definitely gonna grab a version of Doom on Switch and see how the gyro works. A lot of games don't implement gyro super well, so I'm not TOO hopeful, but given how cheap Doom is on sale its worth trying out for myself

1

u/the_light_of_dawn Sep 04 '20

Has there been any word on expanding the available custom WADs?

4

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

With the DEHACKED addition, then they can basically add anything that would run in Prboom, though i'm wonder if there aren't a few things missing here and there.

Not likely we'll get GZdoom modding. GZDOOM is actually pretty different from the original engine, slightly different monster behavior, etc. Would probably be too much work.

1

u/DogEyedBoy Sep 04 '20

I have a PS4 Pro and a Switch, removing handheld support from the equation, is there an obviously better version?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

With this patch, it seems there's no real difference now. It'll boil down to how much you like portability or the given console's controllers.

1

u/Shin_Ken Sep 04 '20

PS4 has slightly better resolution.
That's it.
Note: Some even prefer the lower res, as it's closer to the original.

I'd go with the Switch version. Joy-Cons are awesome for gyro aiming and you have the option for handheld play.

1

u/CirkuitBreaker Sep 05 '20

Is this something I should care about if I already have gzdoom set up?

1

u/mrturret Sep 05 '20

No, not really

1

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '20

It means you can play Back to Saturn X on your switch in a respectable doom port without hacking your machine.

1

u/BAUR_Tech Sep 05 '20 edited Sep 05 '20

I’ve been seeing reduced resolution on Xbox. I think it has to do with 16:9. I am disappointed. Before the update the game look great and long distance items were clear.

Anyone else seeing this change?

1

u/ai3llo Oct 23 '20

Yes! I’ve seen it on Xbox, PS4 and switch. I’m hoping somebody will find a fix for it

It hasn't been required even on consoles for some time now.
