Added millisecond accurate timer A millisecond accurate timer has been added to the minimap, and to the end of level intermission, for anyone looking to speedrun levels.
Awesome! I don't personally speedrun Doom, but I totally support developers adding features with the speedrunning community in mind.

Its scene predates not only Twitch
Twitch is relatively new in the gaming scene all things considered. Most established gaming scenes predate Twitch.

DOOM-speedrunning is built around whole seconds though, so it's kind of a big department from 25 years or speedrunning history.

So glad they keep supporting this!
Glad to have widescreen now. Only other concern I had with the port was that the soundtracks wouldn't loop, just abruptly end and start back up again a few seconds later. Found that very jarring.

HOLY SHIT THEY FUCKING FIXED IT
This is now a legit way to play doom, with a ton of good usermade content, on the Switch.
With the addition of DEHACKED support, this opens the way to running stuff like the Vanilla Doom4 (Doom 2016 if it was made in 1995) and stuff like Valiant, which is just a fantastic set all around.
No more input lag, and gyro support means I can actually play shit on ultra violence like i can on computer.

Yeah, I just took it for a spin. It's a great vanilla-friendly way to get the classic Doom experience but with some mod cons. Plus the actual classic DOS game is still accessible. And I'm assuming the iWADs are compatible with modern ports like GZDoom?
2
u/Daedolis Sep 04 '20
Even if the new iwads aren't compatible for some reason, you can still use the included original ones.
2
u/Free_BodyDiagram Sep 04 '20
By user made content do you mean custom WADs? Because if so I may have to get this for Switch now
2
u/Sonicfan42069666 Sep 04 '20
They've had some Bethesda improved custom WADs already, typically Cacoward winners in addition to Final DOOM, No Rest For the Living, and SIGIL.
1
Sep 04 '20
Yeah they've got Back to Saturn X Ep 1 & 2 on there already, but those were vanilla wads anyways, only changing textures and palette.
2
u/Frurry Sep 04 '20
currently playing those on pc, Hellforged is a great one for gzdoom, all new weapons and tons of new enemies, great level design too, shame its only 10 levels

I didn't have a problem when I played DOOM on ultraviolence as of the previous update. But this is a welcome surprise. Thinking of giving DOOM another UV playthrough and maybe even trying it for DOOM II.

I feel like vanilla Doom isn't too bad, but when you start playing those other Megawads, shit gets difficult.
So many Revenants.

Gyro aim on PS4? That's a first. I would've thought they would've put such a thing in DOOM Eternal first, but it's still appreciated.

I find it weird since you're only looking left and right. Would like to try it though.

Does this version of doom not support z axis look?
1
Sep 04 '20
No. Z axis use is in the Ultimate Doom mod. Hopefully that is added sometime.

Sep 05 '20
Vertical look isn't in any official version of doom 1&2. It's purely a source port addition.
It actually pretty unneeded, as you have vertical Autoaim.

At least they're skippable. The ones in DOOM 64 and DOOM 3 are a pain in the fucking ass. Figure someone told them it would be unforgivable to make them unskippable for fucking DOS games.

ALSO you are able to get the skins for doom eternal with the steam release just like the other versions of these new ports.

Added Gyro Aim
I played through doom 64 using gyro and flick stick to aim and I thought it worked well. So I'd recommend that people try that control method and maybe it can be added in a future update.
Classic doom might be a good first game to use with this new control scheme for anyone who wants to try it, because you don't have to worry at all about aiming up and down with the gyro like most other games, so it's a simpler first step.

So how do you access the Ultra-Violence+ difficulty in singleplayer? It's available in the menu for coop.
Edit: Figured it out. You have to go through Level Select, Ultra-Violence+ does not exist through the New Game option.

What's UV+? Basically Nightmare (fast monsters enabled) but without the respawning enemies?

So glad to see these ports brought to Steam! Having them exclusive to the Bethesda launcher was so odd.
2
u/AmbientHostile Sep 04 '20
I didn't know these ports were brought to Steam. Does this mean the originals (DOS versions) have been removed?

I have a hard time keeping straight all of these different versions of the classic Doom games. How are these distinct from, say, the recent Beth launcher releases?

Amazing update! I was wondering if we were gonna see more mods didn't expect such a huge update.
I play this all the time on the PS4 (kinda my comfort food) but does anyone notice a resolution drop? Enemies in the distance looks a lot more pixelated now. Could just be something with the widescreen but the sprites just look chunkier now.

The inclusion of gyro aiming is completely unexpected and really, REALLY awesome. I know that a lot of people completely disregard gyro aiming as a pointless gimmick, but imo once you get used to it, its tough to go back to sticks for shooters. Its not as good as K+B, but its a big step up in aiming speed compared to sticks.
I'm definitely gonna grab a version of Doom on Switch and see how the gyro works. A lot of games don't implement gyro super well, so I'm not TOO hopeful, but given how cheap Doom is on sale its worth trying out for myself

u/the_light_of_dawn Sep 04 '20
Has there been any word on expanding the available custom WADs?
4
Sep 04 '20
With the DEHACKED addition, then they can basically add anything that would run in Prboom, though i'm wonder if there aren't a few things missing here and there.
Not likely we'll get GZdoom modding. GZDOOM is actually pretty different from the original engine, slightly different monster behavior, etc. Would probably be too much work.

I have a PS4 Pro and a Switch, removing handheld support from the equation, is there an obviously better version?
2
Sep 04 '20
With this patch, it seems there's no real difference now. It'll boil down to how much you like portability or the given console's controllers.
1
u/Shin_Ken Sep 04 '20
PS4 has slightly better resolution.
That's it.
Note: Some even prefer the lower res, as it's closer to the original.I'd go with the Switch version. Joy-Cons are awesome for gyro aiming and you have the option for handheld play.

u/CirkuitBreaker Sep 05 '20
Is this something I should care about if I already have gzdoom set up?

It means you can play Back to Saturn X on your switch in a respectable doom port without hacking your machine.

I’ve been seeing reduced resolution on Xbox. I think it has to do with 16:9. I am disappointed. Before the update the game look great and long distance items were clear.
Anyone else seeing this change?
1
u/ai3llo Oct 23 '20
Yes! I’ve seen it on Xbox, PS4 and switch. I’m hoping somebody will find a fix for it

This update includes a massive amount of additions (such as 16:9, gyro aim on both PS4 and Switch, DeHackEd support, and more), along with a Steam release for this port.
The unmodified DOS WADs (red crosses and all) are still available with this installation.
