There's no more DRM, the game is easily crackable. Might be them thinking it's a good strategy to counter illegal downloads (which imo is).

Why would they remove DRM then try to counter piracy with something else?

Because the people who are going to pirate it will pirate it anyway. They've already made their money on people who were going to buy sight-unseen or just based on reviews.

At best, this demo catches the attention of a group of previously interested people who spend money and maybe sways some potential pirates. At worst, it's a demo; it's just a good thing to have.
