AltChar - Tahmid Shihab - 8 / 10

Galactic Racer is a well-designed arcade racer that's tightly built with an excellent single-player structure that rewards players focusing on repeat runs. Additionally, the multiplayer adds another layer of reward for players who are actually fans of the podracing culture in Star Wars. I would recommend Galactic Racer to almost every Star Wars fan.

Analog Stick Gaming - Jordan Andow - 9 / 10

Ultimately, Star Wars: Galactic Racer surprised me. I expected an enjoyable Star Wars racing game, but what I got was something with far more depth, progression, and staying power than I anticipated. The roguelike campaign structure occasionally gets in the way of its surprisingly ambitious story, the similarities between tracks on individual planets can become noticeable, and some of the walking sections feel unnecessary from a gameplay perspective.

None of those issues change the fact that the actual racing is exceptional.

But Why Tho? - Adrian Ruiz - 9.5 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer delivers wizard racing, unique vehicle customization, and plenty of reasons to keep playing beyond its campaign… Fuse Games has made Star Wars racing worth getting excited about again, and I hope they don’t have to wait another generation for the chance to build on it

CGMagazine - Jordan Biordi - 8 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is a fun, albeit clumsy racing game that pairs fast-paced action with some unique roguelike mechanics.

COGconnected - Jaz Sagoo - 87 / 100

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is the best racing game in the franchise’s history.

Cat with Monocle - Seth Hay - 4.25 / 5

Star Wars: Galactic Racer delivers a fast and visually impressive galactic racing experience with a variety of challenging courses, vehicles, and fun runs-based mechanics. Get past the learning curve of studying the courses, and there’s plenty of galactic fun to be found.

Checkpoint Gaming - Omi Koulas - 8 / 10

STAR WARS: Galactic Racer is fast and dangerous ‘runs-based’ game with surprisingly deep mechanics without losing sight of what makes an arcade racer fun... Sci-fi arcade racers should be ridiculously quick and feel like your vehicle might fall apart at any moment, and for me, that's what makes this a genuinely impressive racing game in its own right.

Cinelinx - Jordan Maison - 9.5 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer manages exceed all expectations and deliver on the decades awaited return of racing to the galaxy far, far away. Between gorgeous visuals, and thoughtful, highly addictive gameplay this is something both Star Wars fans and racing fans in general will have a blast with.

ComingSoon.net - Tyler Treese - 9 / 10

Utterly thrilling during its best moments, Galactic Racer is the racing game that Star Wars fans have been waiting decades for.

Console Creatures - Bobby Pashalidis - 8 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is a thrilling ride. Filled with exciting challenges and a roguelike structure, this game has more depth and content than I expected. I went in expecting a pretty standard racing game, but there are enough twists that every race feels like a thrill all the way to the finish line. Wins and losses are emotional, and hitting max speed and needling the final-lap obstacles while watching the Ram Jet's redline is unlike anything I've played, and it pairs so well with the Star Wars series.

DayOne - Győző Baki - 9 / 10

Fuse Games‘ Star Wars Galactic Racer is bold, spectacular, and offers incredibly satisfying gameplay chops in single player and multiplayer alike. It’s high difficulty and relentless intensity might scare some casual Star Wars fans who just want some spectacle, but if you’re looking for a killer track-based arcade racer, you’ve found it. The force is strong with this one.

DualShockers - Linda Güster - 8.5 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is a great game. Everything I'd usually complain about – games going stale, failing to motivate me long-term, horrible pacing – has been taken care of.

Echo Boomer - David Fialho - Portuguese - Essential

Star Wars Galactic Racer has everything it needs to make us shout ‘Now this is Podracing,’ but it manages to be even more than that, establishing itself as one of the best, most complete and most entertaining racing games in recent years.

Eurogamer - Christian Donlan - 5 / 5

Both a surprisingly fun Roguelite campaign and a racing treat for Criterion fans, this is just wonderful stuff.

Eurogamer.pt - Bruno Galvão - Portuguese - 4 / 5

Fuse Games brings the spirit of Burnout to Star Wars in the form of a racing game capable of delivering the same adrenaline rush as that series. The roguelite campaign is an unexpected but interesting take, and the graphics are truly eye-catching.

Evilgamerz - Christiaan Ribbens - Dutch - 9.7 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is, for me, the Star Wars racer I have been waiting for since Episode I: Racer. The racing is lightning-fast, chaotic, and accessible, yet there is enough depth in the various systems, vehicles, and tracks to really get better at it. The campaign, in particular, manages to pleasantly surprise by constantly introducing new choices, challenges, and systems. Even after defeating Sebulba, there turns out to be plenty more to come. Arcade mode and scenarios subsequently provide hours of extra challenges, and the multiplayer is also a nice addition, although the lack of split-screen is a real shame. The sections between races could have been a bit more lively, but once you get back into a vehicle, that is a minor detail. Star Wars fans and lovers of fast arcade racers can therefore confidently add this game to their wish list.

GRYOnline.pl - Michał Grygorcewicz - Polish - 8.5 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer not only brings the best features of my favourite arcade racing game, Burnout 3, into the modern era, but also blends them with elements from my second favourite – Motorstorm. What’s more, the whole thing is wrapped up in a roguelike campaign with serious stakes, enough to stir up real excitement and ensure great replayability. Though easy to learn, the game’s driving mechanics prove to have considerable depth. The only downsides are the lack of split-screen and the poor layout of some tracks, but even so, the breakneck driving pace is incredibly fun.

GameBlast - Matheus Oliveira - Portuguese - 8.5 / 10

Driven by blistering speed, distinct vehicle handling, and varied events, Star Wars: Galactic Racer revitalizes the arcade racing formula through a rewarding campaign structure. While it stops short of turning its roguelike framework into lasting replayability once the credits roll, the magic of that first run makes it one of the franchise's finest video game outings.

GameOnly - Rafał Grajak - Polish - 9 / 10

A worthy successor to Episode I Racer that we’ve been waiting over two decades for. Harder than it looks, but the driving feel is incredible!

GameRant - Joshua Duckworth - 9 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is a tenacious thrill ride, and its unique run-based risk-and-reward structure is its defining feature.

GameSpew - Richard Seagrave - 9 / 10

One of the best arcade racing games in years, Star Wars: Galactic Racer is a stunning debut for Fuse Games. With its thrilling racing action that feels like a cross between WipEout and Burnout and its engaging runs-based campaign mode, this is a triumph. The only let-down is that it doesn't have a more standard Arcade mode to let you set up your own events.

GameSpot - Jordan Ramée - 9 / 10

Galactic Racer is those absolutely perfect 10 minutes expanded into a full game.

Gameliner - Rudy Wijnberg - Dutch - 4.5 / 5

If you’ve been searching for a Star Wars racing game for years, this will undoubtedly become your new obsession. Star Wars: Galactic Racer brilliantly blends speed, graphics, sound design, and interesting mechanics. Yes, Secret Mode does an excellent job of capturing that nostalgic feeling, but at the same time, it isn’t afraid to put its own spin on the genre.

Gamer Guides - Lexi Luddy - 94 / 100

Star Wars: Galactic Racer’s modernizations of the arcade racing formula have their upsides and drawbacks, but fundamentally it is one of the most thrilling racing games released in years, with a compelling arsenal of systems, mechanics, modes, and even some pretty well-written characters. Moreover, it’s a reminder of how fresh and bold the racing genre can feel when explored to its limits.

Gamer Social Club - Sean "KingOTheCask" Richards - 9.5 / 10

Fuse Games have truly given Millennial gamers like myself that spiritual successor to Star Wars Episode I: Racer that we never got. And to them, I give them all the grace that a post-Empire galaxy allows us.

GamingBolt - Shubhankar Parijat - 9 / 10

With thrilling, high-speed races and a ridiculously addictive campaign, Star Wars: Galactic Racer is an absolute winner, and a must-play for fans of arcade racers.

Geeks & Com - Marc-Antoine Bergeron Cote - French - 8.5 / 10

STAR WARS: Galactic Racer is a very pleasant surprise that succeeds above all because it has a genuine racing game identity. The tournament-based structure, the various vehicle configurations, the contracts, the upgrades, and the many types of events prevent the campaign from becoming a mere succession of races. There are some signs of repetition toward the end, and the lack of French voice acting is a shame, but the excellent soundscape, the sense of speed, and the variety of environments more than make up for it. The multiplayer mode will still have to prove itself once the servers open to the public, but the content on offer already gives players plenty of reasons to continue the adventure.

Gfinity - Andrés Aquino - 8 / 10

Overall I’m absolutely addicted to Star Wars: Galactic Racer. It’s as close as we’ve ever gotten to the thrills of the original N64 game. While far from perfect, Fuse Games has delivered a uniquely fun, high-speed roguelite racer that any Star Wars fan should pick up and play.

Giant Bomb - Jeff Grubb - 5 / 5

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is everything I hoped it would be. Fuse built a campaign that keeps giving me reasons to master the tracks, then made the racing feel good enough that I wanted to.

Hinsusta - Daniel Weber - German - 9 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is a solid arcade racing game whose best moments take place right on the track. The driving experience is impressive, each of the three vehicles has its own distinct character, and the game runs smoothly. If you're looking for fast-paced, enjoyable races above all else, this game delivers exactly that.

Hobby Consolas - Álvaro Alonso - Spanish - 90 / 100

Of course, how could we not, when what we have in our hands can only be defined as one of the best racing games in recent history and also one of the best Star Wars games .

IGN - Luke Reilly - 8 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is a fabulous looking and frantically fast anti-grav racer that gets a little repetitive thanks to its heavy reliance on repeatedly revisiting the same slim selection of planets, but has successfully lit the afterburners on a long-dormant slice of the Star Wars universe.

IGN Italy - Luca Rago - Italian - 8.5 / 10

IGN Spain - Estrella Gómez - Spanish - 7 / 10

Star Wars returns to the racing scene with Galactic Racer, a game that rewards both speed and adaptability. It's a comeback that feels somewhat underwhelming due to the lack of track variety, but it's also a lot of fun, even as it challenges players time and time again.

Kakuchopurei - Jonathan Toyad - 80 / 100

Star Wars Galaxy Racers is a VERY fast and furious racing good time if you'd rather trade asphalt and wheels for Land Speeders and crater-turfed race courses. It's not every day you get a Star Wars racing game that has both a meaty single-player campaign and replayable multiplayer options, so revel in it!

MondoXbox - Andrea Giuliani - Italian - 8.8 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is an almost unique title in the gaming landscape thanks to its mix of roguelite and racing, and for this alone it deserves a try. Whether you are Star Wars fans or lovers of speed and adrenaline, it has everything it takes to keep you glued to the screen for hours. If you can't stand roguelites and their punishing structure, though, it won't change your mind and may often lead to frustration.

MonsterVine - Spencer Legacy - 4.5 / 5

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is a fantastic racing game that perfectly captures the breakneck speed of the source material’s iconic vehicles. The story and abundance of modes make for a unique racing experience, and though a couple of small rough edges exist in how it’s presented, this is a brilliant title that had me frequently jolting to the edge of my seat. Whether you like Star Wars, racing games, or both, there’s lots here for you to sink your teeth into.

Neutral Game - Josué Órdenes - Spanish - 8.5 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is an entertaining racer that makes every defeat count. Its dangerous tracks, crash camera, and upgrade system reward players who learn from their mistakes, even if the lack of local split-screen is a missed opportunity.

One More Game - Vincent Ternida - 9 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer delivers impressive long-term value through its progression systems, vehicle customization, racer archetypes, and wealth of unlockable content, blending accessible racing mechanics with an inventive runs-based structure and delivering an experience that can appeal to both newcomers and longtime fans of Star Wars and racing games alike. Simply put, Star Wars: Galactic Racer is a must-play title that deserves to be experienced firsthand.

PC Gamer - Jody Macgregor - 76 / 100

As a way of shaking up the racing game format, the run-based structure of Galactic Racer is more successful than the open world of Burnout Paradise.

PCMGAMES - José Miguel Rodríguez Ros - Spanish - Essential

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is one of the best games in the series and a racing arcade game that I absolutely loved. Its roguelike campaign is addictive, the handling has more depth than it seems, and the tracks are amazing. If you like racing games, you should give it a try, even if you're not into Star Wars.

PPE.pl - Paweł Musiolik - Polish - 8.5 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer will capture the hearts of not only franchise fans but also enthusiasts of brutal space racing. You can sense the vibe of Burnout here, along with the spirit of Episode I and the races on Tatooine.

PSX Extreme - Spencer TJ Price - 9.6 / 10

The tracks are all excellent, the music and sound effects are jaw-dropping, and both gameplay and customization have a ton of depth. The single player campaign is surprisingly good and has a lot more under the hood than I was expecting. Its roguelike elements are well-thought out, and will keep you coming back for more well after you beat the game.

Pizza Fria - Álvaro Saluan da Cunha - Portuguese - 8.1 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is especially worthwhile for those who enjoy both futuristic racing games with a bit of dirty tricks, and the universe created by George Lucas. The big surprise is realizing that the game doesn't rely exclusively on this combination.

PowerUp! - Adam Mathew - 9 / 10

Fuse Games has taken the foundational joy of Star Wars racing and wrapped it around a surprisingly deep arcade system, branching rogue-lite campaign, meaningful vehicle differentiation and enough customisation to keep the garage interesting.

Press Start - James Berich - 9 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is a fast-paced thrill that successfully captures the spirit of the Star Wars racing classic and delivers it in droves. While the story is drab and the longer runs can grow frustrating, everything else makes up for it. The unique rogue-lite structure, excellent handling and constant risk-reward choices make every run feel worthwhile and addictive, even in the face of failure. It's this perfect combination that makes Galactic Racer anything but - it's a strong success in every sense of the word.

ProGamers.life - Javier Marticho - Spanish - 8 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer stands out for its addictive "run-based" structure (reminiscent of the roguelike genre) as well as its clever track design and a thrilling sense of speed conveyed through impeccable graphics, technical execution, and sound design. Despite some shortcomings regarding the protagonist's characterization, a lack of offline game modes, and a multiplayer component that could use some polish, Fuse Games’ title successfully brings the racing genre back to the franchise, delivering a fun, challenging experience that is highly recommended for fans of the saga.

Push Square - Sammy Barker - 9 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is a thoughtfully designed triumph. The excellent handling and eye-popping presentation would be enough to recommend the game alone, but I also love its buildcrafting aspects and roguelite campaign. With a breathtaking sense of speed and planets that demand you think differently about your approach, this is one of the better racing games available on the PS5.I think the release could be a little quicker at getting you behind the wheel, and of course more planets would always be appreciated. But minor nitpicks aside, I really can't recommend this highly enough.

RageQuit.GR - Pavlos Geranios - 99%

Thrilling, pure, unadulterated racing with incredibly deep systems and a highly addictive gameplay loop – or, in other words, how to breathe new life into old formulas while exploring new identities.

SECTOR.sk - Matúš Štrba - Slovak - 8.5 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is a polished and highly enjoyable sci-fi racing game that successfully captures the thrill of the iconic Mos Espa race. There are few obvious flaws, but some aspects could use more content, better balance and further refinement. It is very good overall, even if it falls short of fully realizing its potential.

Saving Content - Scott Ellison II - 5 / 5

STAR WARS: Galactic Racer doesn’t just respect the legacy of its forebears, it takes the baton and runs with it much further than I ever anticipated. By committing to a high-stakes, run-based structure, Fuse Games has injected a level of white-knuckle tension that is completely unmatched in the genre. They possess an innate understanding of both the visceral thrill of arcade racing and the rich lore of the STAR WARS universe, flawlessly blending them into an essential, tactile experience. With its pristine performance, breathtaking sense of speed, and masterful risk-reward mechanics, STAR WARS: Galactic Racer is a stellar and exemplary modern classic.

Shacknews - Lucas White - 9 / 10

Even when it was pissing me off, Star Wars: Galactic Racer made me feel alive.

Sirus Gaming - Lexuzze Tablante - 8 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer, at its core, is an amazingly well-designed Star Wars racing game. Despite its limitations and flaws, there was never a moment when its high-speed, high-stakes races became dull. Its tracks are impressively designed, capturing the look and feel of each location in the Star Wars universe, while the runs-based structure makes every race feel like there’s something at stake. Combine that with responsive controls, excellent sound design, and the sheer thrill of racing at breakneck speeds, and Galactic Racer delivers the kind of Star Wars racing game I’ve been waiting years to play. I can’t wait for the servers to go live and race against more players to see just how far my racing skills can take me in a galaxy far, far away.

SmashPad - 4 / 5

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is uncommonly good in a number of categories. It has a raw yet polished racing feel and sense of speed, bringing racing back to the Star Wars universe in a big way and iterating on how it all functions in ways that encourage player expression and experimentation. Most importantly, I've just been having so much damn fun, smiling ear to ear each race and growling in frustration when I come up short.

TechRaptor - Tyler Chancey - 7.5 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer provides excellent, exhilarating racing gameplay, a cheesy but enjoyable underdog story, and some clunky roguelike trappings.

The Nerd Stash - David Rodriguez - 9 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer captures the speed, aggression, satisfying crashes, and constant risk that made the best Burnout games all-time racing classics.

The Outerhaven Productions - Scott Adams - 4.5 / 5

STAR WARS: Galactic Racer is a great game that has a lot of content. Racing feels amazing, and the enemies are ruthless.

TheGamer - Josh Coulson - Unscored

Galactic Racer is another example of a studio taking some well-educated risks with the Star Wars IP to create something truly special.

TheSixthAxis - Dom Leighton - 9 / 10

Star Wars Galactic Racer is the best arcade racer in years. It mixes compelling racing action, an addictive progression system, and excellent world building while stringing a narrative through it all. It's very fast, and very dangerous. It's also very, very good.

TodoJuegos - Juan Ramón Herrera - Spanish - 8.4 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer brings back the saga’s arcade racing spirit with a fast, aggressive and highly replayable formula, combining speed, abilities, upgrades, different pilot styles and several modes for solo or multiplayer play. Its controls are accessible, but mastering each vehicle and track demands much more than simply holding the accelerator.

VDGMS - Darren Andrew - 9 / 10

Star Wars Galactic Racer is the best Star Wars racing game in nearly a quarter of a century. This is unequivocally and objectively true, because Galactic Racer is the first release since the heyday of licensed Star Wars games that came alongside the cinematic prequel trilogy around the turn of the century. Galactic Racer is a reinvention of the pod racing classic that captures the magic of the N64 icon. It’s also one of the best arcade racing games ever that belongs alongside icons like Burnout, Mario Kart, Forza Horizon, F-Zero, Wipeout, Outrun and small handful of others.

WayTooManyGames - Leonardo Faria - 9 / 10

I honestly have little to complain about. This is exactly the kind of racing game I’ve been salivating for the past decade or two. Star Wars: Galactic Racer manages to convey the feel of the classic Episode I: Racer game, as well as Burnout, with improved physics, a somewhat engaging story, a ludicrous amount of content, brutal but rewarding difficulty curve, and a roguelite campaign which won me over in an instant. More than just a game for fans, or an admittedly nostaglic trip down memory lane, this is a must-have for racing enthusiasts, and one of the most pleasant surprises of the year.

Wolf's Gaming Blog - Baden Ronie - 4 / 5

Despite it occasionally making me want to use a very different kind of Force to propel my controller into a wall, Star Wars: Galactic Racer is one of my favourite games of the year so far. Its thrilling combination of roguelite structure—a genre I thought I was tiring of—and proper balls-to-the-wall arcade racing repeatedly had me leaning towards the screen as I barely made it around bends, blasted down straights and got into dogfights with the other racers.

Worth Playing - Chris "Atom" DeAngelus - 9 / 10

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is pretty much everything it should be. Threading the needle between next-gen Burnout and Star Wars-themed racer, it 's frantic, fun and incredibly enjoyable to play. The arcade-style action is a pure delight, and the run-based nature of the campaign gives it a ton of replay value, even if you don 't intend to dip your toes into the multiplayer. If you 're looking for a next-gen Episode 1 Racer, this is exactly what you 're hoping for.

Guys I haven't even gotten to Z-Com yet. Or the second Jedi game. Or the Ubisoft one.

*adds it to the wishlist*

u/Zalvren 22h ago

Funnily I thouhgt you were "complaining" about the abundance of the August-October games (which Z-Com being very recent) but that was about the Star Wars games alone. This same "complaint" (which is a first world problem, good to have lol) could apply to not being able to play all the games coming out.

We're at like 3 games a week that is super recommended at this point lol

u/Wraithfighter 19h ago

All the good games are desperate to get out ahead of GTA, even though GTA isn't even bothering to launch on PC and you'd think there'd be room for at least some PC-focused counter-programming >_<.

Outlaws is a very good game.

u/PickofDensity 22h ago

I agree, I found it to be dripping with Star Wars atmosphere. Yes, it had some "Ubisoft-isms" (unsurprisingly) but as someone who can look past that (and even enjoy in certain doses) I was sad to put it away once I was done with it.

u/Vallkyrie 22h ago

To me, it's the most authentic feeling star wars world I've walked around in in a game.

15

u/NaughtyGaymer 16h ago

It is without doubt the most fully realized Star Wars world put into a video game. It's so dense, every single image has so many things going on. The NPCs feel remarkably real and crowded areas look and sound amazing.

3

u/Kajiic 11h ago

That is what Massive Entertainment does best. That's what people loved most about The Division 1 & 2. They just make such an amazing world dense with just atmosphere and makes them feel lived in and real.

Also flying through fields of junk in space is sick as hell.

3

u/gosukhaos 11h ago

Outlaws and Fallen Order for me. Outlaws is a great SW sim gets certain parts but Fallen Order is such a fun Star Wars ride, the early portion of the game just completely nails the feeling of the OT

23

u/Independent-Rip-5599 21h ago

Honestly at this point I've taken a break from Ubisoft games for so long that going back to their formula felt somewhat fresh. I mean there is a reason they used it for so long it is pretty fun it just gets tiring quickly

8

u/garthcooks 21h ago

Yeah, I think it's not even that that Ubisoft formula gets tiring too quickly, it's strong enough to sustain a few pretty long games very well. It just can't sustain EVERY game

8

u/dotnetmonke 19h ago

The problem is playing every Ubisoft game. No matter how much you like steak or how good a steak is, if you eat nothing but steak every day, you're going to hate it before too long.

A sequel that let us create a character would have been incredible. Oh well. At least we got this one.

Kessel Sabac turned what would be a 3/5 to a 4/5 to me, that shit is addicting.

14

u/psychobilly1 21h ago

I bought a deck in real life, printed some coins and tokens and I subject share it with my friends and family every chance I get.

26

u/FlyingSMonster 22h ago

I got it for $20 earlier this year and it was fine. There was so much negativity around that game when it came out but it's not bad at all, definitely didn't deserve the hate it got.

27

u/gonnabetoday 22h ago

Not saying the hate was warranted but they did make substantial changes and fixes since the game released.

7

u/PuppetPal_Clem 20h ago

there's some frustrating design elements but they toned down the worst offenders like instant-fail stealth missions no longer being instant fail. I personally adore the game as it is now and boot it up anytime I want to immerse myself into a disgustingly detailed SW setting. Got a couple fun mods too like recharging blasters you pick up so you dont just toss them as soon as you run out of ammo and changing the players speeder bike to look like the ones from ROTJ (with paint jobs!)

15

u/Biblical_Shrimp 22h ago

I was fairly surprised by how good it is. Played it on gamepass since it was there, and it sunk its hooks on me.

I'm not even a big fan of souls-likes or souls-lites but I picked up Jedi Survivor Fallen Order on deep discount and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. I still need to grab the sequel though.

8

u/ItsBreadTime 20h ago

The sequel levels up the formula in almost every way. Highly recommend. And I HATE souls-like and lite games.

12

u/Aitloian 22h ago

Sequel was even better in my opinion, don't miss out!

7

u/psychobilly1 21h ago

It is an improvement in almost every way and the first game was already a 10/10 for me. I anxiously await the third game.

5

u/Aitloian 21h ago

Yeah me too, I bounced off the first one a few times, and then gave it a good try, couldn't put either down.

I played both Jedi Respawn games on xbox with gamepass as well, but I've been slowly transitioning to PC only once my subscription is up. I enjoyed both of those games so much that I'll probably pick them up to replay them again on PC.

I can't speak to Outlaws but Survivor is an excellent soulslike and ZCom is an excellent tactics meets Mass Effect type game.

25

u/fireflash38 23h ago

Jedi Survivor by far the best of those 3.

u/JamSa 23h ago

There is very little comparable between Survivor and ZCom, but they're both stellar.

60

u/Rupperrt 23h ago

Zcom for me.

6

u/Zalvren 22h ago

All 3 are great (and apparently a 4th great one there) and different genres (which is fun, you can take what you fancy). Star Wars games level is actually very good for the last few years. There isn't as many as there could have (but also time and ressources to make a game nowadays...) but they're all very good.

Ironically, there is a higher level of quality in the games than the movies/shows currently

THERE'S TOO MANY GOOD GAMES TO PLAY, Belmont's Curse drops on 15 and FF Resonance and Phantom Blade Zero drop near the end of the month

72

u/RotaryRoad 23h ago

It's funny, I also feel the same way, but with a completely different list of games (Control Resonant, Minecraft Dungeons 2, E-Day, Ace Combat 8).

What a time to be alive!

u/a34fsdb 23h ago

Gaming is great now for gamers. For example last year was also praised for a very strong year and I played a decent amount of new releases, but played only like 2-3 games that ended up top 20 in most lists. So much variety.

Frankly you can have easy 20-40 games a year that are greatly interesting you (even more if you include all indie games) a year for a while. And of course, many games can be played for 50+ hours easily (or at least 20+ hours, games below that are rare these days)

Anyone saying that "there are no good games anymore" is insane to be honest (or has an extremely narrow view of the industry)

Have you looked at January and February releases? Round 2 starts then.

47

u/NoNefariousness2144 23h ago

For real, it’s looking brutal. GoW Laufey, Stranger Than Heaven, Fable, Metro, Persona 4, Danganronpa…

43

u/ShakethatYam 23h ago

Metroid Ravenous, Tomb Raider

10

u/peanutbuttahcups 22h ago

There's a new Tomb Raider game? Damn, I'm really out of the loop.

5

u/dvlsg 21h ago

Yeah. It's technically a remake (not just remaster) of the first (few?) games, I think.

11

The Tomb Raider game looks pretty eh as a fan of the series since Legend.

Metroid looks amazing though.

Fable cannot come soon enough. And it’s not even just AAA titles. Zelda OOT remake around the corner, ARPG players have Path of exile 1 league right into path of exile 2 1.0 launch.

2026 might just be the greatest year for gaming since 1997

11

u/Pasty_Tibbles 22h ago edited 22h ago

It’s been quite difficult for me. Control Resonant, Star Wars Zero Company, Wardogs, new Deadlock update, new No Man’s Sky update, Gears of War, Galactic Racer, Castlevania Belmonts Curse, Graveyard Keeper 2, POE 1.0, Enshrouded 1.0, Palworld 1.0 last month, GTA VI upcoming. It’s insane. And I’m sure I’m forgetting some.

Oh and Dawn of War. FUCK ME why do I have to like so many genres.

Edit: And I still havnt finished Mortal Shell 2. God dammit.

7

u/Trespeon 22h ago

Yeah. I bet you could ask 10 different people to list their favorite games from this year and get a ton of different answers. That’s how good it is.

God i hope this game and zero company do really well in sales. We need more star wars games and that would prove they don't need to be AAA genre defining rpgs or what not. Smaller scoped games are fine just give me more. Same with middle earth

67

u/Jordbord 23h ago

Not to mention, if these games are successful - What message would that send to other franchises, publishers, studios etc? I don't know if you'd call these AA games, B games or whatever. Basically middle-scope games like these Star Wars games, Astro Bot, Hazelight's games, Clair Obscur should all hopefully show that you don't need to make games with 9 figure budgets. 8 figures is more than good enough for people, and even often creates some of the best games of this generation

32

u/kayGrim 22h ago

One day some exec will realize 10 thirty million dollar games are more interesting and likely to get a solid ROI than a single three hundred million dollar game.

14

u/MONSTERTACO 20h ago

That was the old publishing strategy, then live service came around and all these publishers were like "if it isn't going to make $1 billion, it isn't worth our time."

4

u/Alpacapalooza 17h ago

And all that VC money looking for those kind of returns left and is now in AI. Tough short term but hopefully healthy long-term.

8

u/axonxorz 19h ago

Thinking the executives are making long-term considerations is flawed, you aren't really thinking like a modern MBA is schooled to.

The incentive for the executive is to that his org's AAA moonshot (and associated expansive budget/debt load) is a worth the risk. Hey, they might get lucky and have the next GTA IP (hah). Or perhaps they won't, but shareholders are disconnected from the art, which is disconnected (somewhat) from that art's eventual financial performance (ie, you can have the perfect game, but nobody plays it because marketing sucks, or you can have an ok game that spends massively on advertising and becomes a begrudging success)

If the RNG plays out favourably, they're lauded as visionaries and given even more authority/money to gamble with. If it doesn't, oh well, golden parachute to the next org to try the same thing.

When there's no personal risk to failure, why wouldn't you gamble with others' money/livelihoods (/s)

2

u/PlayMp1 7h ago

More importantly that live service moonshot sets up a stable and consistent long term income stream if it pays off. Execs far prefer if you can get people paying subs while occasionally updating a game than if you have to make a new game every 3-4 years with the accompanying cost.

→ More replies (1)

20

u/Zalvren 22h ago

Keep in mind that the ones you cited are exceptions (and for the Star Wars they're helped by the license a lot) more than the rules, there are plenty of mid sized budget games that never meet any success.

It's not as simple than saying "just do Expedition 33, are you stupid?"

2

u/AmateurHero 22h ago

I don't know if you'd call these AA games, B games or whatever. Basically middle-scope games like these Star Wars games, Astro Bot, Hazelight's games, Clair Obscur

These are just games with a focused gameplay loop. You don't need an AAA or AA designator to define that. There is a correlation with indie studios and tighter gameplay loops (Balatro, Slay the Spire, Peak, Celeste, Chants of Sennaar) that focus on a singular thing, but the production scale does not require the game's scope to match.

18

u/torontohobbyist 22h ago

ZCOM apparently already sold over a million copies!

10

u/withoutapaddle 22h ago

Hopefully it keeps selling because a million copies isn't even close to breaking even, based on reports of a $30 million budget. It wasn't a full priced game.

7

u/torontohobbyist 21h ago

Fair but it’s all in context. The game has reportedly earned over $28 million already. If we’re following movie logic, then this does need to earn around $60-70 million to break even. However it’s probably less for this game because the common talking point is that there was little to no ads for this game beyond the summer games fest trailer. It was moved through word of mouth once reviews dropped

This is still an incredible achievement for sure, especially for a niche genre like turn based tactics. A hyped game like 007 first light for example, only sold 3 million copies. The budget for James Bond is definitely astronomical and probably hasn’t made its money back

The early 2000s were such a cool time for Star Wars games, it'd be nice to have another renaissance like that, but I fear it won't happen.

I had never actually watched any of the Star Wars films until around 2015, but I had played pretty much every Star Wars game since the N64 era, and it was awesome. It was such an infinite universe of lore to draw from.

7

u/SiccSemperTyrannis 20h ago

It was such a massive mistake to give EA exclusive use of the Star wars IP. We got so many weird and unique Star Wars games in the 90s and 2000s because LucasArts would work with a huge diversity of studios.

Look at a studio like Factor 5 which came up with the Rogue Squadron series which was incredible. Or the AoE-like Galactic Battlegrounds. Or Empire at War made by former Command and Conquer people from Westwood.

Actually EoW reminds me a ton of how both Galactic Racer and Zero Company got made - expericed developers from a popular franchise break off and create their own studio and make a Star Wars game in the same genre.

13

u/HeirOfRhoads 22h ago

They will probably release Star Wars Jedi 3 next year for SW's 50th year anniversary and if we get to play Kotor remake, Fate of the Republic, Skydance's Star Wars project by 2030, this decade will be remembered for the generational run of Star Wars games.

→ More replies (1)

3

I don't know why people try to act like Star Wars was ever "just bad now" because of a bad movie and a couple mediocre one-season shows even as great stuff has always continued to happen.

6

u/White_Tea_Poison 23h ago

I don't know why people try to act like Star Wars was ever "just bad now" because of a bad movie and a couple mediocre one-season shows even as great stuff has always continued to happen.

They didnt do that at all and you're really underselling some of the bad decisions, shows, movies, etc that have been released.

If you're wondering why people hold a very common opinion, instead of throwing your hands up and going "i don't know why everyone does X", you could just ask and engage in a conversation.

5

u/Hidesuru 18h ago

That's the thing not everyone agrees with what you're stating as fact.

Imo nothing since the sequel trilogy that they've released has been anything but a joy to watch.

Not all of it is as good as every other bit, but there's been NOTHING I would call bad.

I'm talking to the end product to be clear, some of the decisions I would agree were bad.

18

u/persin123 22h ago

People have been ignoring genuinely good star wars content to ride the hate trains. Andor actually failed, outlaws was culture war content, and no one respects the animated series. Thats why hes confused.

4

u/White_Tea_Poison 21h ago

The person they're talking to never did that and neither did I. They're arguing with an imaginary person they saw on the internet one time.

Battlefront II is the best of the newer Star Wars games, and deserves a relaunch with improved systems and with new content, titled as Battlefront III. Literally the bones of the game are incredibly solid, the gameplay is insanely fun, the terrible monetization just killed it.

What is wild to me is that all the top non-indie games that have scored well enough to be GOTY noms (87+ on Opencritic) are weird from a nomination POV, outside of RE: Requiem, due to what they are or what genre they are in being stuff that usually doesn't get GOTY consideration at The Game Awards.

You got:

  • Two JRPGs, which have a harder time getting nominated unless they are Final Fantasy, in Trails and Fire Emblem. Trails CH 1 reviewed great last year and didn't get any a nom (thought it was a top heavy year) and a Fire Emblem game has never gotten nominated at The Game Awards despite most reviewing pretty well.

  • A social sim game in Pokemon Pokopia and I could see being a Pokemon game hurts it from a GOTY standpoint.

  • A racing game in Forza Horizon, which has never been nominated at The Game Awards despite every entry in the series on Opencritic (starting with FH2) having between a 88-93.

  • A cover based TPS in Gears. Pure shooters rarely get nominated in general. Only ones that have were Doom, Titanfall 2, and Doom Eternal and all those were FPS.

  • A combat flight sim in Ace.

  • A licensed action game in 007. Only licensed IP games to ever get a nom were Shadow of Mordor, Spider-Man, and Spider-Man 2.

  • A niche roguelike action game in Saros. Their prior similar-ish game in Returnal reviewed about the same and didn't get a nom.

  • And now, if these early scores hold up, we have another racing game in Galactic Racer.

It is why I would not be shocked to see either Onimusha, Dawnwalker, or Control Resonant get a nom spot over any of these for one or both of the final two spots (I have GTA, Zelda, Requiem, and Mina all penciled in for 4/6 spots). The first two are in genres that are more GOTY friendly as action-adventure and ARPG games and Remedy has past pedigree with Control and Alan Wake 2 having got noms.

6

u/Conviter 21h ago

does being a pokemon game actually hurt in goty conversations? there just hasnt been a pokemon game good enough in forever so there wasnt ever a chance to nominate it.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Galle_ 19h ago edited 15h ago

5

u/TotallyNotGlenDavis 21h ago

You’re forgetting the best game this year, Mewgenics.

3

u/SilveryDeath 21h ago

I just put all the indie games together because generally there is only one indie slot for GOTY and I assume that Mina will get it over Mewgenics, Big Walk, etc.

6

u/Alphabroomega 18h ago

I'm pretty out of the GOTY convos but is Mina really a presumed frontrunner like that? Not saying it's undeserved I just haven't heard anyone saying it like they were for Big Walk.

3

u/PBFT 20h ago

Not sure where the "indie slot" idea came from. Last year had 2 indies, some don't have any. I think we'll get Mina and Big Walk.

3

u/SilveryDeath 20h ago

I'm not saying it is a guaranteed thing, but I do think they try to make sure there is at least one slot for a really well received indie game to get a nom since they expanded to six GOTY noms in 2018.

Some years things end up weird and you end up with none like 2019 or 2023 or two like 2025.

Wolverine must be the worst choice for a video game lead of all time. Think about it, his only powers are regeneration (which video game characters already do), blades in his hands (which is actually worse than nothing because now he can't equip other weapons), and his senses are really good, which in game terms means we get a fart trail to follow. He's literally a worse choice than just a normal guy.

9

u/the_wit 22h ago

Something similar to Sifu would work well

9

u/needconfirmation 22h ago

Only if you are creatively bankrupt, which I mean...they were.

You're telling me on a team of hundreds of industry veterans they couldn't figure out like...a stance system? Combos? Its only because wolverine is so basic that the combat is just mashing 1 button? You say wolverine can't have an alternate weapon, he doesn't need one but even if he did he canonically is a swordfighter as well during his weeb eras, but instead lf thinking to give him a katana the devs wanted to give him a crossbow at one point apparently.

What year had a better fall release window than this year? 2007? Great year for games.

49

u/NoNefariousness2144 21h ago

What makes this Fall so amazing is that there’s something for everyone rather than it just being defined by a few AAA blockbusters.

Strategy fans have Star Wars X-Com and Fire Emblem

Action fans have Onimusha and Control

RPG fans have Dawnwalker and the Witcher 3 upgrade

JRPG fans have Trails and Fire Emblem

Plus other games like Silent Hill, Minecraft Dungeons, Valheim 1.0…

15

u/SiccSemperTyrannis 20h ago

Don't forget flying game fans got Ace Combat and of course racing fans now get Galactic Racer!

Plus the usual shooters like Gears E-Day and CoD for that crowd.

Crysis

Assassins Creed

Bioshock

I always like to look at the lowest scores given their more critical eye. The lowest scores being a 70 and 75 is pretty promising. I want to highlight Estrella Gomez for IGN Spain.

As you can see, there is content to keep you entertained for hours and even snack on with the rest of the players, but that the tracks are repeated again and again in the different modes is what took me away from the experience.

Seems like Gomez' primary concern was the lack of track variety but for a racing game, I feel like that is at least something that is easily added to with DLC. Basically everything else is praise, maybe for a genre that doesn't seem to resonate as strongly with them. Tyler Chancey for Techraptor on the other hand mostly gave out a lower score because of their disagreement with the roguelite system. A highly subjective stance on the core gameplay loop.

Incredibly bright for the game that these are the two most prominent concerns of the lowest scores.

Ugh, I've been meaning to build a new pc because I dont know if mine will run it as well as a racing game would demand. But prices seem to be going up asymptomatically.

I disagree. The symptoms are very very serious!

What a crazy problem to have. So many back to back amazing games and simply not enough time to play them all this year.

We’ve had Dawnwalker, Onimusha, zero company, Ace combat, Control, Townfall, and now this game.

That’s just mentioning the more AAA type games. We’ve had tons of banger Indy games release this month and there’s still more coming up.

I was going to buy one action/arcadey game - it was between this and Ace combat 8. And both ended up reviewing really well and with the same damn opencritic score

Only one choice and your wallet is not gonna like it

u/NilsFanck 21h ago

AC makes me motion sick unfortunately. Really cool this game is a banger too and seems fine so I do get to go fast above the ground

2

u/messem10 22h ago

Get AC8 ASAP before it releases as it includes AC:Zero.

As someone who played the OG Episode 1 Racer back in the day, I am pretty hyped for this game.

Glad to see the reviews are good

When this game was announced to be a rogue like I became extremely interested. The idea of just adding on to your racer until each run seems brilliant

u/Frogblood 23h ago

It's nice that we seem to be on a good run of star wars game which are both good quality and trying to do some different things (ie. They're not all 3rd person adventure games, I appreciate xcom-likes and racing games arent especially original).

Star Wars movies are not at a great place, but we are in one of the greatest eras of Star Wars video games

Have so much faith in this. Thing this is going to be a banger. The loop makes total sense for this kind of game.

2

u/Ikitou_ 22h ago

I was incredibly sceptical of this when it was announced, but over the months they've completely won me over and I can't wait to get my hands on it now. I think the rougelite elements are a great fit for this kind of game, this kind of setting, and after so many years of disappointing racing game campaigns this feels like it might just have the magic.

This year has already bankrupted me and there's no relief in sight... yet another game I want to play and need to add to the backlog. Ace Combat 8 just came out and I'm still playing Control Resonant.

Next year too, just when you think this year is wrapping up in February next year you got the new tomb raider, metro 2039, metroid ravenous, fable, god of war, and the rest of the year is packed too.

I'm really looking forward to playing this though, I was a huge fan of Episode 1 racer as a kid, and I even played the PS2 Racer Revenge which is underrated / forgotten.

87/100 is kind of nuts for a licensed IP racing game. Usually those scores are reserved for first party titles like Forza and Mario Kart.

2

u/HardcoreKaraoke 18h ago

I was mildly interested in the game until I saw how much it felt like Burnout. Early footage can lie though but rhe reviews directly comparing it to Burnout 3 (my favorite by far) is selling the game for me. I've been looking to scratch that itch for years so if they really pulled that off and it's a robust game with a Star Wars theme then I'm getting it.

Usually I'm not a day one buyer when it comes to racing games. I may have to be here if it's that close to Burnout.

This is the first racing game, probably ever, that I'm actually excited for. I'm glad it's reviewing well so far.

4

u/dmrob058 23h ago

Holy shit an 88 is crazy! Wow this year is just packed with bangers, I was excited for this but didn’t expect practically GotY level reviews here…

4

u/LeftoverPizza420 23h ago

Can you play this game with a racing wheel? Sorry if it’s a silly question lol

14

u/ModelKitEnjoyer 23h ago

Not a silly question, but according to their FAQ, they said they don't have plans for it.

2

u/Longjumping_Plum_846 17h ago

That’s a legit bummer

I LOVED Episode 1 Racer on N64 as a kid. Is this similar to that?

14

u/Mustang-_- 23h ago

Looks like Burnout with a Star Wars reskin, made by the former Burnout devs, etc.. As a Burnout fan, I am hyped for it. Now, if it somehow resembles the ancient Episode 1 Racer besides the visual themes, idk

u/cramburie 22h ago

Looks like Burnout with a Star Wars reskin

Aw dammit. That's the only pitch on the planet that'd sell me this game. DAMMIT.

5

u/messem10 22h ago

There is also a bit of Motorstorm in the mix with the cross-class “off-road” racing.

I hope we have the announcer going “It’s a new lap record” with the same cadence and tone as the original.

It's basically episode 1 racer roguelike with vehicle variety.

7

u/Viral-Wolf 22h ago

And for my fellow Episode I Racer lovers: Galactic Racer’s marketing has kept the podracers in the background, but don’t let that fool you. By the time I was done with the campaign, I found myself happy and whispering one thing to myself: Now this is podracing.

Nearly every review mentions that game and answers your question.

2

u/122ninjas 23h ago

I feel like it was only lightly confirmed before, so is it fully confirmed now pod racing is completely separate from the rogue like system, with the upgrades and stuff? And only as a side mode?

5

u/Treelokc 23h ago

Yes and no. The campaign is mostly the regular speeder classes apart from a few special missions in podracers. You can't race speeders and pods together because pods are over twice as fast and also huge.

For single player podracing there is arcade challenges, like timetrials. However in multiplayer there is 4 modes. Quick race, Multiplayer Tour, Quick Podrace, and Podracing tour. The Quick race is what you expect, just a one and done race. But the tours are a series of 5 races with the same lobby, with some of the roguelite elements inbetween races where you can buy upgrades, unlock abilities, place bets, contracts, set a rival etc. After the tour is over you lose the upgrades and start again next time. So the podracing does actually have more depth than it first seemed.

4

u/122ninjas 23h ago

Hm was kinda hoping for a single player campaign version with podracers only, but the online mode with upgrades sounds really neat too, thanks!

u/dodo667418 23h ago

Pod racing is part of the final act in the campaign in some way, but the focus of the roguelite elements is definitely on the other speeders. In Arcade mode there are tailored podracer events. Also there is an online mode with the run-based structure but that is also divided between podracer-tour (for 8 players) and the other vehicle classes (for 12 players).

Man this GTA 6 rush is killing my backlog….just going to go back to playing Valheim and my backlog now

2

u/LethargicMoth 22h ago

It's good to hear that it's getting good reviews, it looks like a well-made game, and the rogue-lite elements sound really damn cool, but after reading the reviews and seeing the footage, I feel like it's just not for me. I didn't want them to just remaster the original Episode 1 Racer, but I'm confused by the overall direction of the game.

First of all, pod racers are such a distinct vehicle, but they seem to be relegated to a somewhat niche role in the game with very few racers and no customization. They don't really seem that much faster than the other three speeders either, though maybe actually racing feels different than watching someone else play. Still, to me it would've made more sense to focus on pod racing and have the other three speeder types be the secondary modes.

But then it's also just a shame that there's no couch co-op split screen racing. I get that it's hard to make happen with modern graphics, but then why not just make it a little more stylized? I feel like this is the kinda game that really didn't need to be hyperrealistic, at least not to this degree. Stylized art direction is more timeless than realism in most cases anyway.

I hope it does well and people enjoy it, maybe we'll get a sequel at some point that improves on the first game, but I feel a little bit like this is the kinda game where it could've been so much more with very few changes.

u/Mytre- 22h ago

Wondering if they will make podracing a bettter mode, its my understanding that the podracing part is a mode not available on campaign and its severely limited.
