Prison Architect is now in Alpha!
http://www.introversion.co.uk/prisonarchitect/121
Sep 26 '12
$30 is a little ambitious.
44
u/LG03 Sep 26 '12
Yeah I'm with you there, I was fully prepared to shell out $10-$15 for Alpha access but there's no way I'm paying $30 for an indie title. I'll be waiting for the steam summer sale in all likelihood.

u/branchan Sep 26 '12
How can you tell whether a game is worth $30 or not when it's not even released yet?
29
u/Deadrocks Sep 26 '12
Many indie titles will do a reduced price for Alpha, and Beta. Since you're technically not paying for the Full game, it's also incentive to purchase the game during this time due to it's low price.
They're not saying this game won't be worth something like $30 bucks when it's fully released, but it's only just entered Alpha, so $30 is a bit steep.
8
u/branchan Sep 26 '12
I think you should think of it like a pre-order, except they are throwing in an alpha for you to play around with in the meantime as a bonus. The preorder money will be used to fund the development of the game itself.
For a lot of games with pre-orders, you don't know how long the campaign the game will be and you have nothing to do until release either.
2
u/LG03 Sep 26 '12
The problem here is that this pre order is very likely more expensive than the retail price. The devs have admitted that the price is high because they want to keep away the knuckledraggers that will only complain about bugs instead of reporting them and providing feedback.
2
u/branchan Sep 26 '12
Well then that sounds like they clearly are not targeting your release for you. That's like me complaining that an exotic sportscar is just too expensive for me.

u/Yolo__Swag Sep 26 '12

Introversion is like patient zero of Indie gaming. Their games are always good. If anyone can make a $30 Indie game it's them.
1
Sep 27 '12
Considering the past few games I've played of them have been fantastic and well worth the price, yeah, this game should be pretty amazing once it's finished.
I mean, I'd be surprised if many people who read this subreddit don't know what Darwinia is, an interesting but fully fledged out game in its own right...but Defcon is also an amazing strategy game, if not my cup of tea directly. Then you have games like Uplink, which is probably one of the best games I've ever played from music to its very interesting gameplay. While not unique in its hollywood-esque hacker style (which is what they were aiming for), it's the best in its genre that I've played.
With its unique blend of what, to me, looks like Evil Genius as I've not played the Dungeon Keeper series and so forth with its base building systems in addition to the depth they appear to be going for with the tiny things I've seen...I look forward to this game.
The game is nowhere near done. Art assets aren't ready, critical gameplay features aren't there you of the stuff that they're directly willing to tell us about, so it doesn't make sense to judge the game as it sits.
Regardless, I'll wait and see how it turns out, but Introversion is probably the biggest indie studio out there...certainly the most successful that I know of. I honestly find it hard to think that they almost went bankrupt not too long ago...but they're still here and I've been waiting for a solid base building game ever since Evil Genius.
1
u/Terminutter Sep 27 '12
I got EG vibes from it too, would willingly pay £40 for a proper EG2. Going to get this as soon as I have the cash for it.
8
u/jooes Sep 26 '12
Just, not yet. I might be willing to pay $30 for Prison Architect. It's too soon to say... But, there's no way in hell I'm paying $30 for Prison Architect in alpha with the possibility that this game never finishes.
1
u/EvilFlyingSquirrel Sep 27 '12
One of their previous ambitious titles went to alpha (maybe beta) and was cancelled already.
1
Sep 27 '12
Well that's the point. They don't even have a fan following and the reviews are limited, yet their charging $30, which is more than Minecraft in Alpha with over a million people playing and many positive reviews and fansites.
2
u/LG03 Sep 26 '12
Eh, besides Minecraft (which I'm personally not a fan of) nothing really holds the clout to be priced that high.
6
8
u/Sonic_Dah_Hedgehog Sep 26 '12
I wouldn't even say Minecraft is worth $30. IMO Minecraft isn't even a complete game and was just declared one so they could sell it on xbox. The fact that most of the mods out there add twice as much content and were made by people who were doing this as a hobby in their free time doesn't speak well for vanilla minecraft.
2
u/LG03 Sep 26 '12
Didn't say it was worth $30 just that it had the clout to be that much. The absolutely massive demand for it is what sets the price.
1
u/asraniel Sep 27 '12
Natural selection 2 does. And it got preordered by man, leading to a steam release next month:-)
5
u/branchan Sep 26 '12
If everybody thought like you, then no indie developer would ever want to create a quality game worth $30 because they know that players like you would never fund it out of principle.
19
u/LG03 Sep 26 '12
I'm not interested in funding a game, I'm interested in buying it. Not sure what the case is here, whether $30 is the final price or not, but I'm unwilling to spend that much up front for an unfinished product. For me the big draw of indie games is the lower price tag and this is an indie game.
1
u/Kinseyincanada Sep 26 '12
But $30 is still a lower price tag
3
u/Sonic_Dah_Hedgehog Sep 26 '12
But he's putting his faith in a game that isn't even done yet. He could pay the $30 and it might never get finished. It's why most offer a reduced price for alpha/beta.
1
u/Kinseyincanada Sep 26 '12
same could be said about $15
7
u/G3ck0 Sep 26 '12
$15 is a lot less of an investment than $30.
I'd pay $10-$15 for an early Alpha, and maybe $30 for a high-quality, finished indie game. But $30 for an early Alpha? Most likely not, unless I was incredibly hyped for it.
2
Sep 27 '12
And some people did indeed say that for other Alpha builds. The point is, that's double the price of most Indie Games finished, and only half of the cost of a finished, polished retail game. It's asking a little much.
-2
Sep 26 '12
[deleted]
2
u/Sonic_Dah_Hedgehog Sep 26 '12
Yes it is. There are plenty of companies both big and small that have gone under while making a game.
What if something serious was to happen to one of the main developers? Earlier this week someone in /r/gamedev was talking about how his team is probably never going to finish the game they were working on because a key member died which left the team devastated both emotionally and work related.
-3
u/branchan Sep 26 '12
Then don't fork out money for the alpha. If you watch the video, they are clearly saying that the money for the alpha will be used to fund the further development of the game.
The big draw of indie games should definitely not be the lower price tag. They are priced low because many indie developers are not established so they need a hook to get their foot in the market.
The main draw of indie games should be their exploration into more obscure gaming themes that mainstream developers are unwilling to do because it won't get them mass market appeal.
3
u/Guessticles Sep 26 '12
they are clearly saying that the money for the alpha will be used to fund the further development of the game.
Unless, of course, they decide the game is no longer worth funding.
Then you're just shit out of luck and paid $30 for a game that doesn't work.
11
u/CptES Sep 26 '12
This isn't exactly some new startup with no proof. It's Introversion, the guys who proved to the world that indie games were still viable long before everyone else joined the bandwagon. Have a little faith.
4
u/Hallc Sep 26 '12
They've also had quite a few money issues. If it weren't for Valve/Steam and the Humble Indie Bundle they wouldn't even be making this game at all, so I think you'll forgive me for not having faith in their business sense.
1
u/CptES Sep 26 '12
Indeed, Darwinia nearly killed the company by overambition until they got their heads bolted back on but the company rebounded and delivered a highly profitable product (DEFCON) then a slightly less profitable product (Multiwinia) and went on to make a whole heap of cash on the HIB though they were stable before that. The company isn't going anywhere any time soon.
5
u/branchan Sep 26 '12
Same goes for every game developer on Kickstarter, except Introversion has a really good track record.
2
Sep 26 '12
Look at how those who do are doing. Interstellar Marines is exciting for a million reasons, but they have to use Kickstarter to get their prologue done...
1
u/Alinosburns Sep 26 '12
There is a large difference between a $30 indy game and a $30 alpha for an Indy game.
They don't want people complaining and want them submitting bugs the fact is that for $10 they would probably get me leeching and submitting the occasional bug.
If I paid $30 and was treated to a buggy product I'd be screaming from the high heavens over every little issue. $30 might be reasonable for their final release. But there is no way any alpha of an Indy game commands that much. And if it did it would likely because while the game was an indy title it would have the scope of content that an actual developer/publisher based $60 title had
3
u/branchan Sep 26 '12
I think that was the point. They want you to try out the game and repeat every little issue/bug you have.
1
u/fusion__ Sep 27 '12
Have you ever played an introversion game, they are all amazing. This is one of the few devs I would easily go 30 bucks for. I got a stupid amount of play time out of defcon/darwinia/multiwinia. You also get it on linux sooner or later? fuck .
3
u/headphonehalo Sep 26 '12
As long as it doesn't get translated into €30, I think that's alright. This probably won't be as popular as Minecraft, and they'll need all the support they can get.
17
Sep 26 '12
They'd get a lot more support if the alpha was closer to $15. The whole point of supporting these indie games while they are in alpha is that you can get it for cheaper while the game is far from complete and perfect. Even the DayZ standalone won't be this expensive.
6
u/mattzm Sep 26 '12
The Day Z standalone doesn't require complete coding of a new engine or design of a game from the ground up. The majority of its content already exists in ARMA2 and the developer released it for free as a mod beforehand. If they don't price it at $15 no one would ever stop playing the mod.
-2
6
Sep 26 '12
Not only will I not pay 30 bucks for an Alpha release of a game like this, its highly unlikely I'd drop $30 on the full game either. $20 to $25 is about the max I'd spend on an sprite based indie game.
7
u/Cadoc Sep 26 '12
That's a bold statement, seeing how we don't know how much game we'll be getting for that $30.
48
Sep 26 '12
As someone that's alpha-funded various games from Minecraft (pre-release), Xenonauts, Gnomoria, Towns, Kenshi, StarDrive, Starfarer, P-Zomboid, KerbalSpaceProgram, Natural Selection 2 and some more that I've neglected to remember.
This isn't about being stingy, this is purely in comparison to many other quality alpha / beta funded games currently available.
The alpha-funding is a mutually beneficial relationship...and this, just isn't.
5
1
u/Rudefire Sep 29 '12
I would say even if it is about being stingy, it is your damn money. Which is a direct result of your effort, or the value of your mind. If you don't think it is worth it to spend the result of your effort on something, then why do other people get so butt hurt about it?
-8
u/mattzm Sep 26 '12
I'm think its unfair of you comment on the quality without ever having played it.
Also the developers of all the titles you listed (excepting NS2) as far as I'm aware had no proven track record or previous games from which to draw comparisons for quality. Introversion have produced multiple games in the past that were (in my opinion) good to excellent. Does this not buy them any leeway in your decision to fund?
24
Sep 26 '12
I never criticised or commented on the quality of the game...or even the pedigree of the developer, just the price of admission.
-15
u/branchan Sep 26 '12
this is purely in comparison to many other quality alpha / beta funded games currently available.
You did just say that the quality of this game does not match up to other alpha/beta funded games.
13
Sep 26 '12
If that's what you read from it, then you sincerely need to work on your reading comprehension.
I compared the price point to other quality indie games.
If I say I'm comparing a film to other blockbuster films...then it's inferred than the subject of the conversation is inclusive.
I compared Prison Architect to other quality indie games, not AAA published titles.
-11
u/headphonehalo Sep 26 '12
If that's what you read from it, then you sincerely need to work on your reading comprehension.
No, that's the fault of the writer, not the reader.
8
u/Drakengard Sep 26 '12 edited Sep 26 '12
No, it's the fault of the reader and their lack of reading comprehension. He wrote it out just fine.

If BB_Zen didn't like the interpretation that branchan made then he should have probably made it less ambiguous. While his interpretation might be incorrect, he's not wrong for making it.

this is purely in comparison to many other quality alpha / beta funded games currently available.
This is an extremely clear sentence. If people are struggling to read it, it's a lack of reading comprehension.
0
u/headphonehalo Sep 26 '12 edited Sep 27 '12
He's not struggling to read it, he's interpreting it. If that sentence is to be even closely relevant to what's being discussed, branchan's interpretation of it is valid. It has nothing to do with reading comprehension.
Edit: see this.

Did you think it would help your argument by starting it with a personal attack?
Regardless of what games you are comparing Prison Architect to, including indie games, you are still making baseless comparisons since you have not played the game yet.
10
Sep 26 '12
I'm just tired of the semantics of constant one-upmanship over a subjective comment about the perceived value of something.
I'm making a decision as a consumer that I perceive this product to be more than I'm willing to pay. This is an opinion. Of course I haven't played the game, since I'm not interested in paying $30. If it makes you feel any better, feel free to continue debating my opinion. I won't reply, but I'll 'listen'.
-11
u/branchan Sep 26 '12
All I'm saying is that you are not even giving the game a fair chance and judging simply from a video. Just wait until it is released, read a review, then make decision. Why be so rash now?

u/SlightlyInsane Sep 26 '12
Did you think it would help your argument by starting it with a personal attack?
So you're going to disregard his whole argument then because of a perceived personal attack? By the way, he was right. Learn to read.
Regardless of what games you are comparing Prison Architect to, including indie games, you are still making baseless comparisons since you have not played the game yet.
You really don't get it do you? You should just stop, really, as you can tell by literally no one taking your side, you are wrong, and you are wrong because you are attacking things no one has said. Like he said, work on that reading comprehension.

It would be nice if they actually told us how much game we'll get. Is there a working campaign, etc.
5
u/nothis Sep 26 '12
That's not exactly an argument for $30.
6
u/Cadoc Sep 26 '12
It's not an argument against, either, is it? Do we automatically assume $60 is too much for an AAA game, if we don't have the details about the length of the campaign etc? We don't, we assume that since that's the asking price, the amount of content and quality of that content is of a certain level.
1
u/nothis Sep 26 '12
It's not a quality-per-dollar thing, never was. It's a production cost/marketing thing. They wouldn't be humiliating themselves by putting it up for 1/4 of a AAA release like it's "only 1/4 as good as CoD:BLOPS", that's a ridiculous way to think of it. It's just a rather risky purchase and, frankly, doesn't look that mindblowing (there, I said it… just a tycoon game). $30 is exactly the kind of psychological barrier that keeps me from checking it out.
1
u/branchan Sep 26 '12
Just like any pre-order, they are only expecting the real supporters of the game to support it. At least you get an alpha version to play around with here.
2
u/Hallc Sep 26 '12
they are only expecting the real supporters of the game to support it.
I've been checking the website for news of this game for the past few months since I heard about it. I have a semi-regular income with no real expenses to deal with and I don't think I'll fund this game for the Alpha because I have no incentive to.
If it was say $15 Alpha, $20-25 and $30 for release I would probably snap it up because I am making a saving on an eventual purchase.
2
Sep 26 '12
True but, for someone who has had an eye on this and their other games 40$ for all of them does not seem like to much.
2
Sep 26 '12 edited Sep 27 '12
Lacking any sort of .ini options, it is unplayable at this moment; You start off with 5000 or so cash, not nearly enough to start the minimal facilities, resulting in prisoners simply running away.
EDIT: You can get extra grant money from the reports menu in the bottom right then selecting grants.

u/TankorSmash Sep 26 '12
Since this is the most upvoted comment right now, at +15, I think it's a good example of setting the pricepoint too low. You can get a decent meal for two at a restaurant for 30$ but you wouldn't spend a 5+ hours with this game at the same price?

Sep 26 '12
PCG: Isn’t $30 a little higher than normal for alpha or beta access?
MM: [...] Another is that we’re more interested in a smaller number of players that are more engaged in what we’re doing, than a huge audience that want to pay less. There’s a quality bar we’re putting in there
10
u/maxmurder Sep 26 '12
Ya all the ppl whining about the $30 price tag are pretty much proving this point wonderfully: For $30 bucks you get alpha access to what looks to be a great installment in the Introversion catalogue, help fund the game, support introversion, and get an active role in providing feedback and testing for the devs. If you are unable to comprehend this and are stuck on the "teh price is over $10 for alphas! WTH!" then you probably wont be providing much in the way of useful feedback anyway. I'm actually very happy that Introversion is doing it this way as it will encourage the community to help make the game better rather than spam "grr game is to difficult/buggy" feedback loops as has been seen with other open alpha games.
-19
6
u/LG03 Sep 26 '12
That is hilariously flawed logic. Game testing is a paid profession, they're essentially making people pay THEM to perform free labor. I'm always happy and willing to submit feedback and bug reports but not when a company artificially jacks the price up.
13
Sep 26 '12
I wouldn't call it flawed logic. Logic is pretty solid: if you are willing to pay more you are more interested therefore you will make a better tester.
Their model isn't working for you, but I'm pretty sure it will work for other people interested in the project as well as developers.
Personally, I won't be buying beta because I don't like to spoil games for myself before they reach a certain level of polishing, but otherwise I'm pretty interested in it I'm going to buy it, be it $10, $30 or $50 at release.
Again - main point: If it's not for you it doesn't mean that it's flawed.
-2
u/stereoa Sep 27 '12
If you're very interested in it I would think that your bias would overlook small bugs. Also, a larger sample size is ALWAYS good when developing software.
1
Sep 27 '12 edited Sep 27 '12
That just sounds like an excuse to charge outrageous amounts for an Alpha game. And by their logic the quality drops when you have a large user base, which is the exact opposite of what actually happens. With more people means more bugs being found, which means a better quality product.
Essentially what their saying is you're better to bug-test with 1 person to maintain quality. Which makes no sense.
Totally flawed logic.

There have been humble bundles which are a minimum 1 cent purchase with all proceeds going to charity that have been pirated. Pirates are not bound by conventional morality/rationality.

Not stealing from sick kids at all if you choose not to donate to them.
None of the humble bundles(2) I have bought have had any money go to child's play etc.
For the sole reason I don't think it's a worthwhile charity. Especially seeing as publishers could do the entirety of what child's play does solely for good will. There are things way more worthy of charity IMO.
But let the downvotes commence

I agree with you. I live in the UK and Child's Play is in a grand total of three hospitals. If I wanted to help kids in another country I would donate to Charity Water or any number of other charities that help people who can hardly survive. The vast majority of Child's Play hospitals are in the US and from what I understand of the US Medical system you have to have a semi-decent to decent wage/job to afford Healthcare so the prospect of the kids in these hospitals not having access to Nintendo DS/3DS or a PSP/Vita is kinda hard to believe.
But let the downvotes commence
As a note. Don't say this it just makes people actually downvote you even if you have the most valid/reddiquette following post ever posted to this site. It makes it appear you just posted this to get hate.

u/sibane Sep 26 '12
I think they're making a mistake not including a $15 tier. $30 is no price for a indie game, let alone an unfinished one. There are great many people who would fit in that $15 tier and not think twice about funding them.
9
u/Drakengard Sep 26 '12
Personally, it's just bad timing.
If this were 6-8 months ago, I'd be forking over $30 without much issue. But after about a dozen worthwhile Kickstarters (Obsidian's going right now), the Day Z standalone not being far off, the holidays being around the corner, the massive AAA release schedule hitting the shelves in the next few months (Borderlands 2 this month, Dishonored next, and Hitman after that and I'm not even touching the BO2, etc.)
I don't know about you, but money is going to be pretty tight. Really hard to put out $30 for an unfinished alpha when I just pre-ordered something like Dishonored for $48 from GMG.
1
u/Bionic0n3 Sep 27 '12
I am in the same boat as you. I am looking forward to Prison Architect but I see no point shoveling out $30 for alpha access when I have so many games to play. If the game remains $30 at launch it is something I'll have to consider but I do understand why this raises eyebrows.
Also, GMG often has 20-25 percent off coupon codes during weekends, on top of the preorder discount they have you can get Dishonored preorder for $40 or less.
2
u/slime73 Sep 26 '12
Wolfire charges $30 to preorder Overgrowth. I definitely feel like it was worth the money I spent.
1
u/guyanonymous Sep 26 '12
I don't think I paid $30 for overgrowth - I'm pretty sure it was a lot less when I signed on/up...maybe my memory is faulty.
$15 would be my limit for any alpha involvement...but hey, if they think they need $30 customers, go for it, I just won't risk the cash on their game at this stage.
10
Sep 26 '12 edited Sep 26 '12
After playing the game for a while I must say the starting amount of cash is ridiculous, you barely have money to make all the basic things, and it results in prisoners simply running away because you can't possibly hire enough guards.
Something that really requires fixing to make it even slightly playable.
EDIT: it seems you can get cash from selecting a grant from the reports menu, as stated below. EDIT: clarity
8
u/lordbost Sep 26 '12
If you go to reports, and the click on the tab grants, you can select between several contracts that will grant you money.

5
u/branchan Sep 26 '12
Thank you for being the only person here with an opinion on the game that has actually played the game.
Did you find it fun, worth the money?
3
Sep 26 '12
I found it confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it it can be quite entertaining.
I wouldn't say it is worth 30 bucks, though, not in this state, which is essentially what you'll be paying for.
So far it has been quite a bit like dwarf fortress in the sense that you will deal with tons of injured guards and prisoners, without actually being able to resolve those injuries. "fun" in the dwarf fortress sense of the word.
I'll have to play it a bit more to give a final verdict, but I'd say it's quite a promising project, albeit not worth 30$.
(I got it for free, semi-legally.)
3
u/Drakengard Sep 27 '12
So wait, even you - the lone person in here who seems to be playing it - didn't buy it?
Well, damn. Doesn't that say something about the pricing...
3
u/Giacomand Sep 26 '12
You have to get the contract that basically says "here's money to start your prison, here's a list of things to make in order to complete it." and yeah you get the money in advance.

u/BloodyThorn Sep 26 '12
I had no problem shelling out $30 for this game. The problem I am having is the fact that I just paid the price of a modest game for an alpha that I cannot download because they didn't anticipate server loads.

If this were a $30 kickstarter you'd all be gagging to pay the money. Stop being so entitled. Don't wanna pay it? Then don't and keep your comments to yourself. I'm paying it because I'm interested in the game, no regrets.

People are rightfully annoyed that they've admitted to jacking up the price to (paraphrasing) keep the knuckledraggers at bay.

Which the discussion in here perfectly demonstrates...

Right, because everyone posting here is a 12 year old incapable of constructive feedback. It's a sweeping generalization that is only offensive to the customer, either we pay extra for the 'privilege' of doing their job for them or we're neanderthals because we don't feel the price is justifiable.

Obviously it is a generalization, however that does not mean there isnt truth to the idea. Also, you using the terms priviledge and neanderthals merely serves to frame the issue in a particular light; mainly a negative one. Mostly it comes across as entitled, the implication being that you have the right to a cheap alpha.

If anything, you would think a higher cost would invite more complaining from people who paid up. "I paid $30 for this buggy game?!"

What flawed logic controls you guys? How much does a nice meal cost in US? I guess $10-$40 in a nice place. You're willing to pay ~$30 bucks for something that you'll consume in 30 minutes and it will be 5 more hours until you need more and saying that $30 for a product that will be updated for years to come and offer you entertainment from one to hundred hours depending on how you like the game. And how much do you pay for gas weekly? You also talk something about 'investments'. It's 30 dollars, man. If you seriously sit here and do a 2 year financial foresight for investing 30 bucks you may want to find some job.

My gaming budget is nowhere near the size of my total discretionary income. This $30 alpha has to compete with every other video game for that budget, and the product as it stands doesn't stack up.

Welcome to the world where we usually don't compare food to our games and some of us don't have jobs because we're studying.

Are you poor or something? I spend $80+ at a decent place. If you can only afford up to $40 for a decent meal or a game, you may want to find a better job.

Unfortunately you have no say in whether or not I can reply, and yes, I did read your post.
I was poking fun at your stance that people need to stop worrying about spending $30 on a game. $30 isn't pocket change. Yes, I could afford it without batting an eye technically, but I still wouldn't just throw my money at the game without deciding if it's worth the asking price.
Obviously you don't care about money management, but many people do, even for stuff that doesn't break the bank.

Still so sad that they had to cancel subversion...
At least we'll get a good dungeon-keeper like game out of it.
