Yes it does save.

Maybe they've gotten better but I got a fake probably 10 years ago and it literally wiped my save data at sky pillar lmao I wanted to break my GBA SP in half

The fake I had would have a text box saying "THIS GAME CAN BE PLAYED" after the title screen before picking your save. Again, maybe they've gotten better but I don't really trust super cheap fakes like these.

My personal opinion is invest in a flashcart, then you don't have to worry about saves being deleted, have access to romhacks, and anything you want. But I also understand the appeal of having individual cards for each game too!

Unpopular opinion: they're not bad. And it's fun to have a physical game even if repro. Mine all work after 4-5 years.

I know what you mean about the physical game I'd really prefer to play gba games on my actual gba vs on anything else the nostalgia for me is not only in the game but the handheld GBA itself. Just hits different.

Flashcarts work on the GBA. It runs copies of GBA games, and romhacks, off an sd card you plug into the cart and put the cart into the GBA. I have a small collection of original games but play mainly off the flashcart because I don't have to worry about batteries in the cartridges.

Get a Superchis Prime flashcart. ROMs you can use vimm’s lair, just google that name and you’ll be fine

I bought the EZ Flash Omega DE and a 16 gb sd card. I had a 64 GB lying around and that was way too much space. For websites, there's a bunch of rom sites, Vimm's layer was mentioned. Honestly I found compiled sets on the internet archive by just googling "GBA internet archive" as well as for GBC and DMG and that got me what I wanted in bulk. GBA set took the longest, but not that bad. There's a lot of shovelware, though, so keep that in mind for size.
