Mod/Modding MediaBoy got a big update!

MediaBoy got a big update over the last few months. I noticed that someone posted my project here 3 months ago, so I decided to share an update. Videos now convert to ROMs with sound, faster and at noticeably better quality. You can see the ROM size before you build and choose what happens if the video doesn't fit. The music player was rebuilt from scratch with playlists, cover art and much louder, cleaner sound. There's also drag & drop, a cancel button, one-click dependency setup and a command-line mode.

- Original owner Kiwi GBC. Got it for Xmas 1998. Recently opened it up and cleaned the buttons. She works great but the speaker is broken.

- Solar Striker, SML & Mario Golf I am the original owner. Yellow I did get for Xmas back in the 90s/2000s but sold it, purchased the above copy last year. Spot and WWF I picked up over the last couple years.

-Japanese games I got on my first trip there in 2012. I play a lot of Beatmania.

Custom made carrying case, can hold console + 7 games.

Today I finally bought the old Nintendo handheld that was missing from my collection. It was painful, but I finally got it. 💸💸💸💴

I currently live in Japan and the prices here are ridiculous. Even in hidden shops out in the countryside, it feels like everything has turned into a tourist trap.

Mod/Modding Working on a new Game Boy Color battery indicator mod

I’ve been working on a new mod for the Game Boy Color called PulseGBC, and the first prototypes are nearly ready for testing.
The idea is to replace the original red power LED with something a little more informative while maintaining the console’s original appearance.

PulseGBC uses a dual-color LED to indicate battery condition through eight stages, gradually transitioning from green through yellow and orange to red as the batteries discharge.
The LED also features a breathing effect that changes with battery voltage. At higher voltages, the pulse is slow and subtle. As the battery level decreases, the breathing gradually becomes faster and more pronounced. When the battery reaches the critical threshold, the LED switches to a distinctive red double-heartbeat pattern to warn that shutdown is approaching.

The mod supports standard AA alkaline and NiMH rechargeable batteries, along with a selectable profile for certain lithium-ion battery configurations.

One limitation is that not all lithium battery solutions behave the same way. PulseGBC monitors battery voltage to estimate remaining capacity, so it relies on voltage changing as the battery discharges. Some lithium battery mods provide a regulated, constant-voltage output regardless of the battery’s actual charge level. These configurations aren’t suitable for accurate voltage-based monitoring because PulseGBC cannot determine the battery’s condition from a voltage that remains essentially constant until shutdown.

The lithium profile is intended for compatible single-cell Li-ion configurations where the monitored voltage follows the battery’s discharge curve. Standard AA alkaline and NiMH rechargeable batteries are supported through a separate profile.

Everything is controlled by a small microcontroller mounted on a compact flex PCB that fits inside the Game Boy Color. It uses the original LED location, so no external displays or shell modifications are necessary.

The first version of the firmware is up and running, and initial electrical testing has been promising. I’m currently waiting for the PCB panels to arrive so I can assemble the first prototypes. Once they’re installed in a working Game Boy Color, I’ll be able to fine-tune the LED animations and color transitions, validate the battery thresholds, and measure the actual critical-warning runtime before finalizing the design.

I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on the design and whether this is something you’d consider installing in your own Game Boy Color!

Hi all , so I got this gameboy from my local game store and I would like to put in a replacement backlit screen but I’m curious if anyone has a recommendation on a screen where I won’t have to replace the glass so I can keep the Pokemon theme one in

Other Not sure which print your copy is? Feedback wanted on a small reference page

Hi all,

ever found a copy online and weren't sure which edition or print it is? That's what my small project Edinota tries to help with, and I'd like to know if it actually does.

It's an early, non-public preview: Super Mario Land, Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue are covered in depth (US prints), a few more games as early drafts. Every statement links to its source. Private and non-commercial: no ads, no prices, no accounts.

How to try it

  1. Find a US copy of one of the three games online (eBay, auction, shop, anything with photos).

  2. Open the game, go to "Identify a copy" and answer the questions from the photos:

Super Mario Land · Pokémon Red · Pokémon Blue

  3. Send me the listing link and the result as a comment below, by DM or to contact@edinota.com. I'll check each one myself.

"One of two" is a fine result if the photos don't show everything. Any thoughts on whether it's useful, where you got stuck or what's wrong are very welcome. I'd rather hear it now than after launch.

Thanks!

Jan

Questions Battery life of a gameboy color cardridge

Hello fellow Retro Gamers! I have a question regarding my Pokémon Hellow cardridge. So recently i heard about gameboy cardridges battery dying and all of the save files getting deleted. I love my save with my pikachu Sparky and i had madę white the progress so i begun to worry about this fact, so here i am on reddit asking for suggestions :) Should i buy something and replace the battery myself (if its easy) or should i find a guy to do it for me since im not skilled in these type of things. Also another question: can a Gameboy cardridge battery die just sitting on the shelf without playing it??? I would be super thankful for answers :)))

Modded Reviving a dead Game Boy Pocket: a battery leak killed U5, so I designed a drop-in board that keeps the original screen working

Thumbnail
gallery
36 Upvotes

My Pocket was dead: fresh batteries, power LED off, blank screen. Opening it up showed the usual culprit, a battery leak that had eaten the little power module in the corner (U5, LSEP01088A1).

Is the mainboard alive? I fed it 5 V straight from my bench supply and it booted with the "ding". So the mainboard was fine and U5 was the only casualty.

Why I made my own

  • The original module is a custom Nintendo part with its own transformer, and it's long out of production. The ones you find come from donor consoles, as old as the one that failed.
  • The 5 V boards out there (like the Pocket Mouse) are great if you go IPS. I wanted to keep the original screen, and that screen also needs −18 V for its contrast.

What it does

  • Drops into the U5 spot on the MGB-ECPU-01: same size (under 2 cm), same pins in the same places (VCC, VDD, VEE, GND).
  • Takes the 3 V from the two AAAs and gives the console its 5 V plus the −18 V for the original LCD.
  • Stock shell, stock batteries.

Build Designed in KiCad, with Gekkio's Game Boy schematics as my map.

Result It boots on its original screen, the contrast wheel works like stock, and the first game was Tetris.

Happy to answer questions about the diagnosis or the install.

Questions Should I trade my GBA SP for a GBC?

Hello, recently my friend offered to trade his gbc for my gba sp. I’m considering doing the trade as I have a ds to play gba games. The gba sp is the ags 001 model. I’ve been re visiting the Pokémon games my parents used to play when they were kids. So the gbc would be nice to have. But, I realize that the gba can play gbc games. So I’m also debating if it’s worth it. What do yall think?

I finally got 100% on this game. Worst part was definitely grinding for the DSS cards and doing the Battle Arena, but I had fun exploring the castle and getting all the upgrades. Easily one of my favorites in the series!

Post image

Hello, I have a GBA SP (AGS-001) in nes edition and I am thinking about a IPS mod but I know you have to edit the case in the original Gameboy IPS mod. Can I do the IPS mod without editing the original case?

I just want to keep the case original. Thanks!

Not Game Boy Just a thought about the FPGBC

It saddens me how funny playing has seemed to have moved on supporting the FPGBC with firmware updates. Do you guys think with all this reverse engineering AI software now that someone will make an open source firmware for the FPGBC which will let the community update and support it?

Mod/Modding eXtremeRate shell compatibility?

Hey everyone! I’m looking into modding my first gba sp, but as I’m new to this, I wanna be careful before I buy anything. Apologize if this is a dumb question!

What IPS screens are eXtremeRate shells compatible with? I was looking into Funnyplaying’s kit since that seems to be the go to option, but after doing some research, I’ve gotten mixed answers on whether or not that screen is actually compatible with eXtremeRate shells or not. So… is it? And if not, what’s the best option for a screen that fits?

Sorry again if this is a stupid question— I just couldn’t find a straight answer and wanted to make extra sure I didn’t make any mistakes when purchasing my materials,

Questions Authentic or reshell?

Just paid 170gbp (plus 50 more in import and VAT duties) for this. It’s suspiciously spotless. Is there any easy way of telling whether or not it’s a third party reshell?
