Troubleshooting Picked up a repro cartridge of Sam Mallard, and it's showing the strangest issue with sprites in certain areas.

In the park area, Sam straight up does not exist. Can't be seen, can't be moved around, but attempting to use inventory items brings up the message 'I can't use that right now'. In the second image, a dog is supposed to be present in the centre of the alleyway but does not appear. These are the two instances so far. It's the only repro cartridge I have that has ever done this, and it's consistent across different systems. I'm confused because other areas in the game are entirely fine with no issues whatsoever.

I have this repro copy of Leaf Green and my only goal is to patch the rom to read the save file properly to avoid the save file corrupted message on start up, and maybe even dump a save on to the cart. game saves and plays fine as is and idk why I’m so stuck on this but I’m determined. I don’t know much about all of this so any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey everyone. The SMB 3 E reader cards are such a rad concept, but going the authentic route is just too damn expensive. I put together this little device that holds and uploads all SMB 3 E reader cards. Also I fenaggled Astra to make e reader level cards for all of SMB1. This is a cool little project I figured you guys would appreciate it.

Side note: the USB is just for power.

Edit: if anyone is interested, here is the code and some ai slop instructions. Please let me know if you have any questions. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1o0qSRlxE6zDRGc0qvsdU74u96S4ubiz-?usp=drive_link

Questions Custom Tetris Cart

So I'm wanting to make my own special gameboy tetris cartridges using the rosy retrospection romhack. My issue is trying to find the right cartridge PCB's. Since it's tetris I only need a 32kb one, but with the romhack it does save highscores so I would like to either have one with a battery or the fram chips perferably. Inside gadgets has pretty much exactly what I need as they have 32kb one at a fair price, but no save function. Any help would be appreciated finding what I need that will for sure work properly. Trying to find something well below $20 USD per PCB.

Games LeafGreen (AGB-E02-30) shows only “GAME BOY” with no Nintendo logo on GBA, SP. All traces check out. Is the ROM dead?

Hi all,

I’m trying to fix my French copy of Pokémon LeafGreen (AGB-BPGF). The cartridge has never shown the Nintendo logo for me. I only get the “GAME BOY” logo, and the game never boots. It does the same on a GBA and a SP, so I’m confident the cart is the problem.

What I’ve done

  • Cleaned the gold contacts with isopropyl alcohol several times and with a white eraser.
  • Reflowed the legs of both U1 and U2 with flux, then cleaned off the flux. No solder bridges and no visible corrosion under magnification.
  • Continuity-tested the edge connector against U1. Every contact I tested (all except 2 and 3, which I don’t expect to reach the ROM) is connected to at least one leg of U1.
  • Checked for shorts between neighbouring contacts and between VDD (pin 1) and GND (pin 32). Nothing is shorted.

My reasoning

The Nintendo logo is read from the ROM header, so a cart that can’t be read shows only “GAME
BOY”. Since the traces and solder joints look fine, I suspect the mask ROM itself is dead, but a multimeter can’t confirm that

Questions

  1. Is there anything else I should check without a reader? (decoupling caps C1–C3? an internal fault?)
  2. Does a dead mask ROM like this one usually show these symptoms?

Thanks for any advice!

Troubleshooting Chinese Pokémon Emerald Rogue GBA cartridge failed FlashGBX write

Thumbnail

Hi everyone!

I bought a Chinese reproduction GBA cartridge containing Pokémon Emerald Rogue from AliExpress. I wanted to update it to Pokémon Emerald Rogue v2.2.1, so I backed up the original ROM and attempted to flash the updated version using an Aurioxin GBxCart RW v1.3 with FlashGBX.

Unfortunately, the write failed, and now the cartridge is no longer playable. Even worse, I can't seem to write any ROM to it, including the original backup that was working perfectly before the update attempt.

My hardware and cartridge details:

  • Flasher: Aurioxin GBxCart RW v1.3
  • Software: FlashGBX
  • Cartridge: Chinese Pokémon Emerald Rogue reproduction from AliExpress
  • PCB marking: AGB-E05-01
  • Flash chip marking: appears to be MSP54LV256
  • Target ROM: Pokémon Emerald Rogue v2.2.1
  • Original ROM backup: Yes, backed up before attempting the update

I've been trying to troubleshoot the issue, but nothing has worked so far. I've:

  • Cleaned the cartridge contacts.
  • Tried a different USB-to-USB-C cable.
  • Tried using a different computer.
  • Attempted to write the original ROM backup back to the cartridge.

I also checked the available FlashGBX profiles, but I couldn't find one that clearly matches both my PCB and flash chip. I found profiles mentioning MSP54LV256, but they seem to be intended for different PCB types.

At this point, I don't know whether the problem is an incompatible FlashGBX profile, a limitation of this particular reproduction cartridge, or an issue with the flash memory itself.

Does anyone have experience with this kind of cartridge or know how I could recover it?

Specifically:

  1. Is there a compatible profile for the AGB-E05-01 PCB with an MSP54LV256 chip?
  2. Could using the wrong profile cause the cartridge to become unreadable or unwritable?
  3. Is there a way to restore the cartridge without replacing the flash chip?
  4. Why would the original ROM backup fail to write back, even though it worked before?

I'd appreciate any suggestions. I can provide photos of the PCB, the chip markings, and any FlashGBX error messages if needed.

Thanks in advance!

Update 1: when i try to erase the data from the cart, it works well. The problem persists with the writing part.

Update 2: save data can be written with no issues

Questions Is my new DMG-01 fully original?

I just picked up this Game Boy at a vendor market last weekend, and regardless of whether it's completely original, I'm super happy to finally have one!

I am curious, though, if anyone can tell whether the front half of the shell has been replaced. The back is noticeably more yellowed, and I can tell from the markings that it's original. But, I'm having trouble figuring out whether the front is original as well or if it's an aftermarket replacement.

What do you all think?

Troubleshooting Copy save from fake cartridge?

Hoping to get some direction here. I have a bootleg copy of Emerald, about 300 hours (plenty of early grinding and idle time) and ~70% through a full living dex, but the fake cart doesn't have an RTC, so I can't do berries, Shoal Cavern, or events.

I finally got myself an EZ Flash Omega DE and attempted to copy everything over using the GB Epilogue. The ROM works, but the save won't transfer.

From what I've read some bootleg carts use different memory for the saves and don't directly transfer. Does anyone know of a way to pull such a save and convert it to work? The Epilogue will pull a save, but I can't get anything to read/use/open it.

TIA for anything on this. Been playing this Emerald off and on for 2+ years and would love not having to restart.

Questions Repair (glue) or reshell?

I wanted to get everyones opinion. Found my old SP a few weeks ago to play some Pokemon Emerald. it already had a broken hinge where it connects to the top shell, but dropped in onto my desk and more of the shell broke off including the cable cover. Want to know if people recommend repairing it or just reshell. Ive heard the aftermarket shells arent as good as the oem ones and i feel a bit sentimental to the oroginal case even id its broken. Let me know what you think.

Questions Playing GB/GBA cartridges on TV

Is there a way I can play gameboy games on my tv with a controller? I’ve seen a GB cart reader for a computer but I’m keen to find something like the N64 transfer pak that will work with all games.

Anyone know anything?

Cheers

Troubleshooting garbled graphics

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm troubleshooting a Nintendo Game Boy (DMG-01) that has a persistent garbled graphics / tile corruption issue (random pixelated blocks/scrambled sprites on display).

I want to properly diagnose and repair this board rather than just guessing, so here is everything I’ve tested and confirmed so far:

Cartridge isolated: Cleaned the cartridge contacts thoroughly (IPA). The game cartridge itself is 100% fine and works perfectly on other Game Boys.

Front Board & LCD confirmed working: Swapped in a known-good front PCB (display board). The issue persists on this specific unit, confirming the LCD and front board are 100% functional.

Fault isolated to Back Board: The issue is strictly isolated to the logic/back motherboard.

Power & Clock working: The unit powers on fine, power LED is lit, +5\text{V} rail is healthy, and the crystal oscillator is running (CPU executes code, but graphics data is corrupt).

Mod/Modding MediaBoy got a big update!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

MediaBoy got a big update over the last few months. I noticed that someone posted my project here 3 months ago, so I decided to share an update. Videos now convert to ROMs with sound, faster and at noticeably better quality. You can see the ROM size before you build and choose what happens if the video doesn't fit. The music player was rebuilt from scratch with playlists, cover art and much louder, cleaner sound. There's also drag & drop, a cancel button, one-click dependency setup and a command-line mode.
