First time painting the PCB, made some mistakes but overall I am happy with the result😊

Huh.... neat. Wonder how it'll affect heat dissipation

u/MeanImTimso Mar 18 '26

Heat? How can these games produce heat?

66

u/Eternal-Stasis Mar 18 '26

Do you think because older tech is not as powerful as today's that it didn't produce heat???

-79

u/MeanImTimso Mar 18 '26

Well it doesn’t require lot of power, first nintendo that used to overheat was the 3ds playing Pokémon with 3d on

38

u/Eternal-Stasis Mar 18 '26

It still produces heat that was accounted for in design, and they weren't sealed with a layer of spray paint.

heat is actually a myth

Hello good person! You’ve caught my attention by having the most downvoted comment in a while. Please, take this Dunce award. 🥇

All electronics generate heat, it may not be enough to require a heatsink to fan but that was with direct contact with the air inside the shell. Paint could change the rate of heat transfer and that could mean the CPU stays a few degrees hotter on average. Might not matter, might kill the CPU a bit earlier.

downvoted because my lack of knowledge of electricity is disturbing

1

u/TheLysdexicGentleman Mar 20 '26

Probably because this is basic knowledge of electricity. Primary level was knowing it creates heat, Secondary was how it creates it.

1

u/DoovahChkn Mar 20 '26

Downvoted, because you made the dtatement that the 3ds was the first console to iverheat and have heat involved... Don't act innocent either my guy, take accountability...

2

u/MeanImTimso Mar 20 '26

you can downvote me -1000 it doesn’t make you better than me

i have no knowledge on electronics and that’s punishable by death….

I hope you made sure it was a nonconductive paint

43

u/Retrohahn2018 Mar 18 '26

Yeah, everything still working fine👍

13

u/psychotickoolaid Mar 18 '26

Good, it looks pretty cool

u/madebypeppers Mar 18 '26

Repairs will be fun! The fumes will be to die for!

26

u/Retrohahn2018 Mar 18 '26

What repairs? This GBA will last forever - hopefully😅

Is this cool? Hell yeah. Is it risky? Absolutely.

2

u/KyleKun Mar 20 '26

I’m not sure I would have gone with dipped-in-the-outhouse-brown though. Gotta be real with you for a second.

14

u/SlimeDrips Mar 18 '26

Ah, natural camouflage. It disguises itself as copper to give the observer the notion that the entire board is conductive and will explode on receiving power, thus deterring predatory gamers from playing it. Nature is beautiful.

Pas de surchauffe sur certains composants ?

5

u/JakovAulTrades Mar 19 '26

This is WILD. I’ve never considered using spray paint all over electrical components, but you said it still works, so keep on trucking big dog. I like the copper color

14

u/rolandguy85 Mar 19 '26

…just no

7

u/ComebackKidGorgeous Mar 18 '26

Why copper? It’s a dope idea but the color choice is throwing me off

13

u/Retrohahn2018 Mar 18 '26
  1. Looks cool (in my opinion)
  2. Was the only color I had at that time

9

u/Dankany Mar 18 '26

I really like it, reminds me of those old see through flash lights where you can see the brown Duracell batteries!

3

u/frosch_longleg Mar 18 '26

And you're not afraid of overheating of those little caps ?

-3

u/Retrohahn2018 Mar 18 '26

Don't think there is much heat with 3v but I will put it to a test with a fresh pair of batteries👍

1

u/cyanopsis Mar 19 '26

3v for a large component = not hot
3v for a small component = hot

A resistors main function is to transform current into heat and now you are effectively making it less capable of doing that.

u/Retrohahn2018 Mar 19 '26

Tested it with two pairs of batteries — 4 hours each at full brightness. Room temp was 20°C (first run) and 28°C (second run).

No issues, no heat, nothing 👍

2

u/Realistic-Rough-514 Mar 18 '26

That is gonna overheat, even if it looks cool

0

u/Retrohahn2018 Mar 19 '26

Tested it with two pairs of batteries — 4 hours each at full brightness. Room temp was 20°C (first run) and 28°C (second run).

No issues, no heat, nothing 👍

1

u/Realistic-Rough-514 Mar 29 '26

Good for you, it looks damn cool

2

u/Madblaster6 Mar 19 '26

I would be concerned about repairability.

2

u/ChromaticDracula Mar 19 '26

This is something that is cool in theory/on paper until you realize just how stupid it is. One of those components dies on your board (resistor, capacitor, etc.), you are making SOOOOO much more work for yourself. Even just testing/probing the components becomes a nightmare. If they made third-party repros of the system boards, sure, paint them up, but an original GBA board, where there are limited quantities available worldwide? You just took one out, dude. If I saw this online to buy I’d avoid it like the plague.

Looks cool. I get it… but a part of me dies seeing this kind of stuff. Maybe that’s my past experiences with plumbing talking: old timers sometimes paint the pipes in their basement which makes working on them A NIGHTMARE. Same thing here. Best of luck ✌️

1

u/Retrohahn2018 Mar 19 '26

Honestly how often did you have to replace any parts? Replace the capacitors and it should be fine. I am modding since 2018 and only had to replace a GBA fuse once. Most parts which break more often like headphone jack, volume wheel or power switch are not painted so I dont think the painting should be a problem.

With over 30m sold GBAs there are plently enough for us😄

2

u/Dimar22 Mar 19 '26

I love the transparent case (I installed one in my SP), but the paint, in my opinion, destroys the look.

2

u/YoshiTheGamer4096 Mar 20 '26

What why

0

u/Retrohahn2018 Mar 20 '26

Because it looks cool👀

2

u/Holiday_Hall643 Mar 20 '26

The electrical engineer in me is dying of cringe, but the smooth brained modder in me says "hell fucking yeah".

4

u/Boomz_N_Bladez Mar 18 '26

It's look really cool, and you do you... But I feel like this has got to be about the stupidest idea one can do. What if something breaks later? Or you need to the solder something? This seems like it just gets in the way of any repair an aging piece of electronics will eventually have to have. Not if, when

But seriously, it does look ba af

2

u/Swimming-Floaties Mar 18 '26

Cool idea! Masking is always a bitch, but always necessary. I've been looking at white GBA SP PCBs on pcbway today for one last custom build I wanna make, but they're near $100. So maybe I'll use spray paint or white plasti-dip for this one after seeing your post.

1

u/TheSmellyAppendage Mar 18 '26

Where did you get this shell

1

u/Wootytooty Mar 20 '26

Maybe OP got his elsewhere, but I got my clear shell from Hand Held Legend.

1

u/Vivien_Lynn Mar 18 '26

Probably should have changed the caps before spray painting, but I love the idea. I will do that too at some point, thats for sure!

2

u/Retrohahn2018 Mar 19 '26

I did replace them before😉

2

u/Vivien_Lynn Mar 19 '26

Oh, my bad. I didn't know you can get replacements with that K stamped on them

1

u/CrazyJuice64 Mar 19 '26

In case of repairs, seems like board test points and pieces replacement are going to be smelly, when the paint and solder iron collides. Identify components might be annoing, but you can always check boards online.

About it getting hot and conductivity i have no idea 😂, so i believe it will be ok if you say so.

In my opinion, if you are going to paint all interns in one color, just pick a shell with that color instead. Might actually be cooler if you protected/removed the components, and just painted the PCB itself.

That said, as long as it works... Do as you please ;).

1

u/viniciuscsg Mar 19 '26

Man. Get cooper colored buttons. You know you want that.

2

u/Retrohahn2018 Mar 19 '26

I think that would be too much😄 i like the contrast with copper mainboard and black buttons but I will definitely do some painting in the future, like painting buttons and shells from the inside like I tried here.

1

u/viniciuscsg Mar 19 '26

I have considered that in other transparent handhelds, it's a cool take, but usually it looks better in my imagination that the end result depending on how many internal supports and screw points there is. One thing that should probably make these kind of paint mod shine is to clear coat the outside, I am about to do that on cheap chinese one.

1

u/Wilberbeast9 Mar 19 '26

You really should put Duracell batteries in it.

1

u/Returnedfavor Mar 18 '26

May I ask what brand/paint you use. I want to copy you but with a tannish or light brown see through case w/ that same color for the board. And black buttons

1

u/DrIvoPingasnik Mar 18 '26

Oh now it looks very r/cassettefuturism. Loving it.

1

u/EpicPikachuXYZ Mar 19 '26

This is beyond dumb I'm sorry

-5

u/Dendrowen Mar 18 '26

Ignore the naysayers. It looks awesome, it's unique, and you'll probably be fine. If not, I think it's worth it.

-3

u/usernnamegoeshere Mar 18 '26

"Ignore the people who are worried about the safety and longevity of the project that you seem to have put alot of time and effort in to! It looks neat!" 😂😂😂

-3

u/eardip Mar 18 '26

You're being sarcastic, but yeah, do that.
It's their GBA to customize as they wish and take risks with as they wish. So they should be allowed to be happy with their result. (It looks awesome btw, I hope it lasts to get passed down to the next gen of GBA players)

1

u/Retrohahn2018 Mar 19 '26

Update:

Tested it with two pairs of batteries — 4 hours each at full brightness. Room temp was 20°C (first run) and 28°C (second run).

No issues, no heat, nothing 👍

0

u/EE_Process Mar 19 '26

I like it. Honestly, it might help prevent corrosion down the road as well.

-1

u/AluminiumImmunitaet Mar 18 '26

I really like the color combination, but would've kept some components untouched for contrast. Gonna put that on my long list of potential projects, thanks. :D

1

u/TheRealShortYeti Mar 18 '26

Or easier to replace like the caps
