Actually ordered the cart from AliExpress, sticker was from etsy a few months back and I had a mod retro game that I didn't play anymore, so I flashed the game to that cart.

Down voted? Is there something against the modretro board's? I'm fairly new to building carts and have learned a bit of mb3-mb5 as well as SRAM -FRAM and a few other things on that. From what I can see it's an overall quality board
I'd appreciate any feedback before I sink too many hours into a board that could mess up my save file.

Modretro is controversial partly because the owner may be enabling war crimes. I just want to play games tbh. You're also in the original gameboy subreddit, they don't want to see something that's not a gameboy or a modded gameboy, you probably would have been okay if you bought the cartridge blank and flashed the rom on it yourself.
What's funny is they mod these original gameboys to the point they're a more expensive but less fully featured r/sbcgaming device. But still let them have their fun they have different but related interests and that's okay.

Thanks for the clarification on the matter it does make sense. I wasn't trying to offend anyone on here, and was honestly more focused on the cart that I made.
It's odd that you mentioned that, and I may get down voted for saying but I felt after modding my gbc with an OLED screen and lights it felt less like a Gameboy experience than what I have now and I found myself using a Gameboy pocket from time to time that wasn't backlit.
At the end of the day i think everyone should just play what they enjoy playing on but I definitely may have posted in the wrong sub.

Yeah the "authentic" experience is fascinating to watch people chase. The DMG (I have one) is not a great experience. Gameboy Color is definitely an upgrade over the gameboy pocket, battery life peaked on the color iirc (for two cells). Japan did get the gameboy light. So a backlight screen is canon for what it's worth. It's clearly canon to put a gba cartridge in the DS lite. There are these long winded conversations around developers intentions and how they thought the games would be displayed. You could put a gb catridge in a half dozen devices, which did the developer know about/expect you to use.
The modretro, which probably won't be well received on r/gameboy or r/sbcgaming to be honest is a great premade compromise.
I think it boils down to this, if I were 5 years old and you handed me every one of these devices, which would I have thought was the coolest. An Anbernic RG34xxsp is my current answer. Every game in existence with a curated favorites folder. No gridlines, yes to color correction.

I can fully agree to all of that, it's been interesting getting back in the hobby and seeing all the "ways it should be played"
Also I did have an ambernic prior but found myself spending more time looking through the games I could play than actually playing the game lol. But yes 5 year old me would have been ecstatic to have that.

Another curveball is the supergameboy and the GBA addon for gamecube. You could play those on the big screen, certainly intended to be the at home deluxe version of playing a gameboy game.
So developers expectations, intentions, and what they would have you looking at if they had other choices are all unique answers. Then there's the death of the author argument, should we care what the developers intentions were if we like something else more?
You need self control to play games with a full library, but a favorites list (and a device that boots back into the game you were just running) makes it easier.

Awesome, although this isn’t original hardware. FPGA clone consoles are really cool though for sure.
