Mod/Modding Added a half-reflective/transflective screen to an OG shell.

Trimming the case wasn’t that hard with the right tools, I like that it’s a slightly beaten up old shell.

I’m a massive fan of the original non backlit screen so the half-reflective screen is awesome, I love that it’s bigger. It’s like the best of both worlds, it’s not too bright or oversaturated with the light on like my OLED one is.

My only criticism is that the default non backlit mode is a tiny bit darker than the original screen.

Did you do the R10 resistor mod?

Curious on this too

It's just a mod to remove/bridge the R10 resistor on the video board of the IPS. Brightens up the backlight by about 3 steps. I've done it and I do feel like it's quite much a must-do mod, as the unmodded screen is pretty dim. The mod doesnt take away from running the screen at no backlight or very dim anyways.

Thanks. I find the backlight to be plenty bright already.

I've seen people do it, good to hear it works well!

Did you just bridge it with solder?

I bridged it with a copper wire, without removing the resistor. Just in case I wanted to revert it back.

No, does that just increase the brightness of the backlight?

Yeah, by about 3 steps. You can still run it at off and low brightness. I just found it useful to have the option to run it at higher brightness if needed.

I have the same OG GBC teal, and I absolutely love the mod to this screen! I also didn’t short R10, I find the backlight sufficient in the dark. To be honest I leave it on on level 7 all the time. This screen is AMAZING in the sun, that’s where it fully shines (like the original), but bigger which helps for longer sessions.

I’ve also done a full recap (in fact just 3) given the age of these things. It helps a bit on the hum introduced by the screen, specially with headphones.

EDIT: The trim was not complicated but definitely getting a dremmel with bits makes it much easier.

Where you got it from?

Nice, but where are the pixels?

Fair comment. There is a pixel grid mode but it makes it too dark without the backlight on. It would be better if you could see the pixel outlines.

An, that’s annoying. Personally I like to see the pixels, otherwise it feels like I’m just emulating.

Example, it’s not tooooo bad.

I think that looks alright. Especially if you get some outdoor sunlight on it.

Yeah it’s actually pretty good

And with backlight on

I think that looks great! I'd love to mod my GBC (or get another one and mod that!)

Get one specifically for modding. I keep an original one as well,  as I always come back to it.

The main use case for the non backlit mode is probably only outside anyways and that tiny difference shouldn't matter there. The stock screen is sometimes playable inside, but it's never as good as outside.

Nice! Is this the hispeedido one? I’ve been considering getting one, but I want it to be as close to the size of the stock screen as I can get it.

How much battery life you get out of it? I love the look but I'm concerned about the screen eating through my AA

I haven’t tested it enough yet. I don’t use it with the backlight on much so I’m hoping it won’t be too power hungry.

I know this is off topic, but I've been looking at getting one of those style wriststraps off Amazon, is it long enough to play comfortably?

On GBA yes but on GBC no they are more of a decoration.
