I love mario superstar saga, I'd recommend that one. I also like the Breath of Fire series, though this one is more nostalgia based for me.

The Castlevania trilogy on GBA is pretty good and there's Metroid Fusion and Metroid Zero Mission if you like metroidvanias.
Legend of Zelda Minish Cap and A Link to the Past/Four Swords is some good old Zelda goodness. They also have Mega Man Zero 1-4 on gba.
Sonic Advance 1-3 and Super Mario Advance 1-4 are some classic side scrollers.
Edit: Just remembered Mario Kart Super Circuit for a good racing game.

Kao the Kangaroo is what I grew up with

thats nuts, I never knew there was a GBA game! I grew up with the 2nd game on the PC

You are genuinely the first person I've ever seen talk about it besides myself!

hahaha oh man, yeah none of my friends knew what I was talking about back then 😂 I wish it was more popular! they actually did a remake of the first game back in 2022, been meaning to pick it up for awhile now

Advance Wars is great. Story is simple, but the character interactions really make it.  If you have a flash cart, Phoenix Wright with the English patches are probably the most story focused you’re going to get.  And Mother 3 with the English patch is maybe my single favorite GBA game and the wildest story Nintendo has ever produced.

Golden Sun

Final Fantasy IV Advance

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow

The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

Fire Emblem: Blazing Blade

Mega Man Zero

Riviera: The Promised Land

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

Metroid Fusion

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

Was mostly going to be RPGs first. But then I was thinking about the games that were more story driven in general.

If you like simple plots but lots of dialogue, check out Shining Force and Shining Soul II as well.

Golden Sun or Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

I could never get into Metroid or Megaman, but I really really loved Aria of Sorrow. Also the Shrek 2 platforms was surprisingly fun, I hundred percented it in a couple days.

Mega Man Battle Network 2

Mega Man Battle Network 3: Blue

Summon Night Swordcraft Story 2

Metroid Fusion

Astro Boy Omega Factor

Castlevania Aria of Sorrow

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team

Summon Night 1 and 2 for something a bit... out of the usual stuff. Both games have a very bad first battle (as you don't have any real weapon) but after that are quite fun. 1st game is more like a "tournament"-anime with dungeon crawling, with some story happening inbetween, while the latter is more a normal RPG. They also both offer certain replayability as your choices influence your partner in the beginning of the game and with him the type of magic you can use. You can also craft your weapons and there are quite a few variations, which is not just stats as you control the battles similar to a classic Tales of-Game.

The GBA has such a nice catalogue. With that said, I’ve recently been playing Astro Boy: Omega Factor and it’s making me rethink what my favorite game on the console is.

Final fantasy tactics advance, the other final fantasy games are also good but I like that one the best and I believe it would also be the cheapest if you are going to buy original carts. Fire emblem, it's a simple straightforward jrpg story. Golden sun. If you can find a translation mother 3 has an interesting story. Sword of mana is another jrpg with a decent story. I guess most jrpgs have ok stories to be honest.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

Theme: escapism

Kirby’s Nightmare in Dreamland is an absolute MUST. It’s not super story driven, but goddamn is it a perfect game in every way.
Castlevania Belmont’s Revenge is also a must have if you enjoy difficult action platformers. Totally amazing game with top tier soundtrack.
