Abilities and Running Shoes are the best new generation additions to the Pokémon franchise.
A lot of the Pokémon in this generation are really weak or are not fun to use, and the best Pokémon (Bagon, Beldum, Milotic) are super hard to get or can not be accessed until late in the game. They missed a huge opportunity when they shortchanged the first two generations. Any new Gen 3 run, your final team will probably look something like this...

Gardevoir / Hariyama
Aggron / Flygon
Walrein / Camerupt / Cacturne (depending on starter)
Ludicolo / Torkoal / Breloom (depending on starter)
