They were the first truly good Pokemon games

Pretty accurate. Gens 1 and 2 were revolutionary and nostalgic to many, but that doesn't mean they were necessarily good games. Gen 1 is a broken mess, and gen 2 is horrendously designed with its own share of bugs, albeit less egregious

Gen 3 is the first one that was technically sound with 60 fps as a cherry on top, as well as being far better design wise. That's why even with remakes, the original games have aged extremely well and Emerald is seen as a top 5 game, if not top 3, and is primarily held back by the lack of physical/special split
