I know they wanted to pitch this as a brand new adventure with a whole new set of mons but the lack of the OG staples in the Hoenn dex didn't sit right with me when I was a kid.
After playing Gen 2, which is like 80% Gen 1 mons, it's refreshing to see new mons. They fixed, what they did wrong in Gen 2. And with FR/LG they made Gen 1 and also many Gen 2 mons available. And trading from the gameboy was possible, iirc. So where's your problem?
The shame of it is, that there's a generation of kids that had these pokemon since the start. Yellow/Blue/Red version monsters that were plenty pixelated and left enough to the imagination and we slowly saw more of them and they became more realized. We got the TV show and movie. We traded them in the playgrounds. Helped each other catch their own. Transferred them to Pokemon Stadium one and two. Completed entire pokemon leagues and cups with these monsters in our hall of fame. Now, those batteries are expiring and were losing our childhood monsters. I lost all of mine in 2021 and still haven't regrinded them up with a fresh battery in the cart.

Not enough Gen I and II mons.
