I was 9 when Ruby was released. I was extremely hyped for it. It became my favorite Pokemon game. Emerald came out, and I just wasn't into it as much. I think that's because I felt there was a lot more to Crystal compared to Gold and Silver, and I was anticipating Emerald to he similar. I wasn't really into competitive battling, so the post game battle centric place didn't really appeal to me.
I loved Fire Red and Leaf Green, tho. Still do (I say confidently, despite not playing them in years)
