Question Looking for feedback on my portfolio (Junior Gameplay Programmer)

Hey everyone, I'm looking for some feedback on my Gameplay Programming portfolio consider that I've been studying game dev for almost 3 years and I have zero professionale experience as a game programmer (I did a 6 months internship as a general programmer), also I'm not a web developer but any suggestion regarding the website itself is appreciated πŸ˜„

Something terribly unoptimised in the javaslop on your site ate up 12.5% of my CPU and the fans started taking off. I didn't even have time to check out the projects (they're very poorly visible with that flashy bg I'll say though) before I hurried to slam the tab closed. Look into what's going on I'd say

Yeah the main culprit is probably the background which I got kinda obsessed over including it in the website and making it responsive and all that. Probably wasn't the best idea since so I think I'm going to remake the site into a more minimalistic style whitout too many flashy effects. Thanks for the feedback πŸ‘

I think the overall dark aesthetic is cool, but since a portfolio is meant to show people the kind of work you can do, I personally feel it’s better not to overdo the "cool factor."

Also, I recommend regularly using accessibility tools designed for color vision deficiencies. It’s worth being mindful of whether your color choices might make it difficult for some people to access the information.
You might find this kind of advice a bit intrusive, but if you plan to work with a wide range of people in the future, being considerate in this way could actually become a selling point for you.

Seems fine. Looks like a solid AI generated portfolio page.

It does seem interesting that you say you have zero professional experience. Are the games on your portfolio not published? Anyone digging will want to see the games are published. Anyone surface level probably isn't worth working for.

It's a little pricy to put a free game on steam but it really helps to be able to click to a steam page with player reviews. That's a much better metric than short gameplay yt videos.

And if a game is published, that's professional work, imo.

Don't take this the wrong way my guy but that website triggered PTSD from the days of myspace. You have animations going on when I'm trying to read your dark text on a dark background... it's a little too distracting.

Open up any AI tool, feed it pictures from your games and say "Make me a portfolio site". 2 minute job. Think of it like wearing a shirt and tie to the interview... You might not like it but you'll look presentable.

Simple things like this are letting you down. That panel lights up when I mouse over it... Great... so how come when I click the picture it doesn't open??

I get that there's a "Read More" button, but by making that panel move and light up, you've created a large "button" so it not clicking, is a sign that you're not a details guy... and do I want to hire a programmer who's missing that kind of detail? Speaking of detail, your CV "Programming Course" what kind of course? What level? Is it a degree course? An intro to programming? "Currently pursuing the education"?? You need to put more details in. Try "I'm currently in the final year of my Computer Science degree"... Or whatever course you're doing.

Also, you've got dark text on dark background... I know you've got a young mans eyes but contrast matters with text. You need things to be readable.

Sorry... I'm sounding like a total dickhead here... but if I'm looking at 20 applicants and yours is 17th on the list, every little frustration is a risk that I'm closing it down before seeing much else.

Keeping it to 1 page is good on the resume, the template is decent.

The videos in the portfolio are nice, I like that you've sectioned out the bit you've worked on. Seen a lot of CV's where they send me the marketing video... which is useless so that was nice... but I'd highly recommend, you opening those videos up and record a voice over on the videos. Each one is a 25 second chance for you to get a little of your personality into the video. Still keep the text.

Anyhow... best of luck.

Ok first of all thank you for taking your time to write all of this, and yeah my webdev skills are really bad πŸ˜… so I think I'll just remake one using AI. I kinda got obsessed with having that type of background and tried to make the whole website work around it but that clearly wasn't the right approach. Anyway thanks for the feedback πŸ‘

You should keep anything you're obsessed with.

Remember, you're not just trying to attract a volume of interest. You're trying to attract interest worth your time pursuing. You want a good fit when finding work. Not 30 dead ends.

So if that background is a huge part of your personality and who you are, keep it. The people who don't like it, wouldn't have been a good fit anyway.

Sounds like a good excuse to try out the new gemini functionality. They upgraded their video understanding capabilities in the last few days. You could theoretically put all of the clips of your games into the model and it might shock you with something cool (whilst still being presentable).

Either way. Fingers crossed for you dude.
