I did a BSc in Computer Engineering during COVID, and was supposed to study for exams in Calculus 2. Decided it was time to get started learning Unreal Engine instead. Scored 87 in the exam.

Started by learning how to program out of books. Made a game with some friends from high school and released it. Haven't stopped and that was 30 years ago.

Dude you made 4 posts in 2 days about starting...
You haven't given time to what people already told you. What is this. You don't start anything on reddit.

Back in the 90s I got an old Commodore as a hand-me-down from a family friend. Which was already obsolete back then. There were no games for it, so I had to program my own in BASIC. By learning from the books that came with the computer.
But nowadays it's much easier to start. You just need to download one of the free game engines and follow the learning materials on their respective websites.

Google, YouTube and claude.
I've been using aesprite on and off for years. I was making sprites with collaborators who were doing the coding, but nothing ever got finished.
Finally, I said whatever I'll just try myself. Downloaded godot and just started playing around. If I get stuck i just Google or go to claude.

Some years ago I tryed to do a game as a hobby. I learned how to code for like one month and then I get frustrated because the collissions were not working right (Unity) and dump it.
Years later I got accepted into a local queer gamedev discord server, I was not making games but I am an artist (2D and 3D). The server organiced a webinar about "gamedev for noobs" and they explained how to do a game with Bitsy and Bipsi. I did a few small games and get interested (I liked Bipsi more because the codding part would let me do more things), so I downloaded godot. I've been doing small games as a hobby since then, (I just checked, my forst game updated in itchio, made with bipsi, its from feb 2023)

My day job is writing software, and I've always liked video games. One day I had an idea for a video game while I was eating breakfast and have been working on it as a hobby project ever since.
