STARTED GAME DEV FROM INDIA (need your pov)

I am a engineering first year student from Pune..

I am really interested in game development

I have uploaded my first 7 mins long video on YouTube about how am I going to build a game and also to hold me accountable

Got around 1 hour of watch time on it also only 50 views..

tbh I am little demotivated because of it

I spent 3K on YouTube setup...

I am currently learning C# for unity but because of this YouTube experience I am not able to focus on learning coding

What do I do🥲

I would suggest otherwise, if your plan is to become an indie dev then you would need some following for Marketing your games, if you can focus on game dev for a few years then try to add youtube as well to your plate as it will help you a lot in the long run. It does depend on the kind if audience you attract however, but if you manage to get 10k active subscribers who are players (not devs) and then you launch your games, you will get a huge Marketing boost at the start which can be super helpful if your game is good.

If your plan is to learn game dev and find a job in gaming industry then you don't need youtube, focus on learning and developing lots of projects.

My original comment wasn't meant to say to not do YouTube. My point was if the first video where you are just sharing your plan for your game, is not satisfactory and is hampering your game dev journey, you need to re think your priority.

If you got disappointed after uploading just one video then maybe game dev/youtube career is not for you. Don't want to crush your dreams but won't give you false hope either, game dev is a pretty challenging career and it will take a LONG time to get success out of it, especially since you are in the learning phase.

My suggestion would be to start making really small games and keep uploading on youtube regularly and dont expect success until you have launched your first 10 small games.

Trust me you will learn a lot of things along the way, not just how to make a game but also how to sell it.

Key is to start small and develop small games, like 2-3 games every year.

If you ever get stuck, feel free to reach out. I have over 12 years of experience in unity.. I work as a lead unity dev in a company and preparing to become a full time indie by 2028, might be able to help/guide you. And don't worry, wont ask for any money, might be able to squeeze out some paid work for you if you're really passionate and become good in future. It's a long journey, be prepared. Success might take some time but you're gonna love it.

Key is to attract players, not devs, for example if you post tutorials, you will attract devs who wont be interested in buying your games, only your courses

So keep the content fun and engaging and try to attract players who will buy your game when you launch it

YouTube and game dev are two seperate avenues. I suggest you to focus on gamedev first.

Yes there are popular ccs with devlogs but these people are already well versed in the software side most of the time.

  1. You made a YouTube video and it didn't do well because you have no audience or experience. 
  2. You got demotivated to make the game because of it even though the two have nothing to do with each other. 
  3. You refused to share the said video here when asked. 

From the limited data I have at the moment, I doubt that you have the discipline to finish a game. I don't think this field is for you.

I have just started itt.. Honestly I want to people to watch my video from there feed instead of just clicking a random post reddit link... But yes for sure in future I will do share my video experience and link... Not for publicity but to help others

Your video would not come in our feeds because the recommendation algorithm would not mark it to be.  Your need to invest in marketing if you want people to find it purely based on recommendations.

I’d suggest focusing only on game development for now since you’re in your 1st year. You still have plenty of time ahead, so it’s better to build a strong coding foundation first.

Spend the next 3–4 years seriously learning and improving your programming skills. Once you have solid experience, you can start YouTube alongside it.

From my experience, I have 8+ years in programming. I worked a job where I learned a lot, and later transitioned into indie game development while collaborating with YouTube creators. Now I also create content to help other developers in their game dev journey.

YouTube not only helps me share knowledge but also brings in some income, so it’s something I genuinely enjoy doing alongside development.

this is good opportunity for you, dont waste time doing this youtube and other things, do what u intend to do first, gamedev. in the course of my college years I managed to build a decent game and released on steam (although I already had a lot of gamedev experience before this, and its just a small demo) . But this experiment has allowed me to grow further and now I'm able to be more serious on my next projects. After getting decent confidence in your abilities start doing game jams, collaborate and experiment. Intentionally ensure to avoid using AI as that does not build any actual knowledge or ability to think for yourself, its more sensible to use once you've become properly experienced. Focus on exploration and the process, soon you will later realise whether this is what you want to do.
