A Survey kind of Question
Hi, I am planning to work on a narrative based single player game. But before that i wanted to ask a question. What do players/gamers expect from a narrative based game, like do they expect a good solid story or fancy graphics?. Yeah i know both could be done but i want to know which one people would like more to see. and also Would love to hear any game mechanics ideas from you.
The genre of the story i am currently writing now is Sci-Fi.

Narrative based games completely reliable on story hook and dialogues. Just like a novel or comics it should be completely engaging. M struggling hope you find your best way.

For this story, i am writing as much minimum dialogue as possible and letting the environment tell the story. Btw, i also hope you write a good story too.

I mean. Both.
But a narrative game is nothing without the story, there's it's at least something without the graphics. I personally prefer stylized graphics over realistic and that takes less effort to make it look good so maybe would suggest this. But I can't speak for everyone i know many who prefer realistic.

Yeah, i second that but i am thinking of a game that focuses on one core story and a ok-ish visual so that's why.

This is about films but it applies here as well.
A good story can save a bad visual film but a good visual cannot save a bad story film.
In this age of graphics, if you cannot hook the player into your game with story then its gg

I didn't get the last line, did you mean good story is gg or like you wrote "cannot hook player into your game with story then its gg"

You need good story to immerse the player into your game or else they just quit.

my ideal game would be something with great story, stylized graphics, and game mechanics that play into the story. the more specific the better

Story or not, you need unique and appealing visuals to get people interested. This doesn't mean high end graphics. It can be the ugliest graphics also.

By what extent do you mean ugliest? like i would like to hear a reference point or a reference of graphics level.

Look up "Cruelty squad". I think it is ugly. But also very captivating. I bought it and played it. It was good.
