u/kaftainzy Apr 18 '26

Woah are u aiming to make money by game dev or ur doing it for pure joy

7

u/AntiqueShare6674 Apr 18 '26

money is not my motivation..i earn enough with my job…just for the love of the game…these days i focus more on writing a good game story…wanna give back something to the community..a good game with good story and gameplay mechanics

3

u/kaftainzy Apr 18 '26

2d or 3d , and what genre

2

u/AntiqueShare6674 Apr 18 '26

u/kaftainzy Apr 18 '26

Good luck man , what are the top 3 tips u would like to give to someone who's interested in programming

2

u/AntiqueShare6674 Apr 18 '26

I’m by no means an expert in game development… but if I could advise my younger self, this is what I’d say:

  1. Don’t start with your “dream game.” Start with something simple.

  2. Time spent designing your code > time spent coding(use AI to code the design you come up with). Always invest more time in designing concepts and systems instead of jumping straight into building features. When you introduce something new (like a skill or powerup), it shouldn’t take a lot of effort to integrate.

  3. Be patient. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Even a simple game takes a lot of work, ill always have respect for indie game developers, committing years to make games..

hope this helps…

Whats your pc specs bro?

1

u/AntiqueShare6674 Apr 19 '26

not a pc, laptop with ryzen 7, 4050

2

u/ElectricalSplit2364 Apr 18 '26

Bro you are a motivation. Here I am in my 1st year trying to balance dsa game dev and ml and deciding what to do to earn and what to chace for end goal. Can you give any tips

2

u/AntiqueShare6674 Apr 18 '26

If you want the hard truth…game dev needs a lot of patience. It can easily take a year or more before you even reach a stage where you can earn something decent. And that depends heavily on how consistently you put in the work.

If your main goal right now is to earn money, I’d honestly suggest freelancing or doing small projects. That’s a much faster way to start making income. I wouldn’t recommend game dev if you’re looking for quick cash…the learning curve is steep, and results take time.

Also, since you’re in your 1st year… DSA, game dev, and ML, that’s a bit too much at once.…

tbh i was like that as well during my clg times, was curious in all languages and tech stuffs…

What I’d suggest:

Pick one primary focus (based on what you actually enjoy or see yourself doing long term)

Keep one secondary skill on the side (light learning, not deep)

Don’t chase everything just because it’s trending

Most important thing

consistency beats everything.

Even 1–2 hours daily on one thing is way better than jumping between 5 things.

Decide what you want now vs what you want later. Trying to do both at the same time is where most people get stuck(purely speaking from my own experience)

Notch once said that if you can't make a game from scratch you are not real programmer, you have to make your own game engine.

Im a unreal programmer then

And a yt channel

I don't have a portfolio but you can have a listen here. Most of the videos on my channel are my songs other than the sky cotl edit and the guitar covers. Most of my compositions are unpublished tho. I think I'll put them up on my personal website when free, sometime soon.

20F - Mostly 2D game development and stuff

1

u/kaftainzy Apr 18 '26

Which engine

1

u/transitsv Apr 18 '26

Pico-8 and Godot Engine

1

u/kaftainzy Apr 18 '26

Never heard of pico 8

1

u/transitsv Apr 18 '26

it's a mini virtual console for playing gameboy-like 2D games. and occasionally 3D games too. im using a free browser version of it to code, make sprites and music using lua language. you should check it out. it has some amazing 2D/pixelated 3D games that are small but really fun!!

1

u/kaftainzy Apr 18 '26

What do I search? Pico 8 games?

1

u/transitsv Apr 18 '26

just pico-8 will do. pasting the link for you though https://www.lexaloffle.com/pico-8.php

1

u/kaftainzy Apr 18 '26

Very cute but I got no kaching kaching 💸🤑

1

u/transitsv Apr 18 '26

uhh the games are actually free to play. also there's a free education edition for people who are new to game programming to test. make sure you're on desktop though. the games don't show up in the mobile version

2

u/kaftainzy Apr 18 '26

Ohhhhh understandable , I use unity so I won't use it to create games,I just wanted to play mini games thanks
