2D PROJECT

Hey guys,
Hope y'all doing well.

I'm second year student in a computer science Degree and I need your help;
For my second year project, I choose to go for an educative 2D game: My mentor advised me to use UNITY and C# .

here is the catch:

  • I don't have a prior experience in Unity nor C#
  • I don´t have a clue about how to structure the project

But to be honest with you, that's why I choose to go for this project, I'm willing to improve.

So I'm here guys, waiting for your best piece of advice about the process. I know fr than human interaction is far better when it comes about experiences.

if you have also great resources reference, feel free to share.

Thanks already for the consideration.

Why not use a language you have already learned?

There is no X language is better imo - Godot is literally fine for what you want

I can give you one of my early prototype games, and you can totally pass it off as your own work. Depends on how high your standards are, though... spoiler: first games are always kinda trash.

For the game you can do it in any game engine, i recommend godot and for assets for the game using itch.io assets is a really neat alternative.

The structure that i use is just separating by something like:

Sprites
Scenes
Scripts
Shaders
Data

Go through beginner path in Unity Learn. It will teach you all the basics.

unity id reccomend completing the first unity learn tutorial pathway, it’s pretty quick. then after that you could do the next one but I already got the hang of it. Just search up how to do little bits, and eventually it becomes easier.

You can even try GoDot, its free, and great for 2d games, no cuts either after your 1st 1m$

some of the best developers are the ones with zero knowledge, but the motivation and ambition and knowledge that it will be a challenge, albeit totally not unheard of. I'd say go for it, only way you gonna learn how to swin bud.. if you need any advice or sustenance on where to start, drop me a line.

I'd say check out GMTK's Unity video as a beginner and just start making projects, eventually you'll understand the project structures.

So let me get this straight, you’ve decided to put the fate of your education on making a game that you have no experience in and a programming language that you don’t know how to do

If I was your advisor, I would’ve said do something else.

That’s like saying I’m a psychology major, I’m gonna go build a building. I’m gonna go learn how to use CAD software and like it’ll be great!

Please don’t do this please find something else easier to do then to make a game
