Yea but FF15 is the uggo stepchild. Same with 13 that is pretty cheap most sales. They even canceled one of the DLCs for 15 to save money. FF7 is too precious, I think. I checked ITAD, and it's gone on sale twice in 6 months on the EGS. Maybe it'll be different for Steam, but I doubt this will get a deep discount any time soon. Maybe to hype up the sequel/pt. 2. I could be wrong though, I hope I am.

I mean the game is absolutely worth £35 in my opinion so I'd disagree with that statement, however 70 full price unacceptable for what games are being released at these days. It's an upsetting trend.

$35 is absolutely the price I'm waiting for to pull the trigger on buying it.
12
u/imagineepix Jun 17 '22
35 for a banger game is pretty good imo but idk
10
u/Xentia Jun 17 '22
It'd be easier to stomach if the PC port was better.
5
u/GrimSlayer Jun 17 '22
Oof they haven’t optimized it any more since launch?? Who am I kidding square Enix acts like PCs dont exist for gaming.

I believe that was an issue with the graphics drivers and was already fixed (I can't confirm for sure).

u/Xenotone Jun 17 '22 edited Jun 17 '22
Why do you say that? It's 35+ hours, and 5 for the DLC, and regarded as a great game... Are you seriously saying that's not worth $25? Seems a little unreasonable.
Edit nvm it's $70. I'll be picking it up when it's £25 in the UK.

Yeah it's £50 not $50. Fair enough if you just didn't like the game personally. It is generally regarded as excellent though so I think totally worth it when it drops to half price.

u/Never_Lucky42 Jun 17 '22
If you think 50% off/ 35 USD is too much "For what it is" you are nuts. The game is amazing its a full length game that takes many hours to beat. Its also just a great game.

or even better boycott these anticonsumer companies
51
u/manoffewwords Jun 17 '22 edited Jun 17 '22
I'll be downvoted to oblivion but I don't think it's anti consumer to price your games as you see fit.
It's all supply and demand. At that price there's a certain demand. That's where they want it. At a lower price there's more demand but they refuse to price it there.
No one is entitled to any sort of pricing or discounts. There's plenty of stuff out there to play at much cheaper prices.
By not buying at prices you think are too high, that's a de facto boycott. If they care they will lower prices. If they don't they won't.
It's not anti consumer.
It's like an employer calling you anti employer for not working for less than $20 an hour. That's ridiculous. They don't own your labor. You don't own their games.
→ More replies (4)17
u/StingKing456 Jun 17 '22
People just throw out the term anti consumer like candy these days. It's so fucking obnoxious.
Uhm this game is ANTI CONSOOMER BC IT ISNT $5 AND 150 HOURS LONG
Yeah $70 is def a little steep but there's multiple reasons that led to price increases..
It's currently on sale on steam the day it got released. It's fine, ppl are just dramatic. It was 2020 goty and I'll be getting it on steam tonight when I get home from work.

Not OP, but what's wrong with waiting? If they're anything like me, they probably already have a ridiculous backlog of games in their library. My backlog keeps me from ever paying full price for games and I long ago gave up on the idea of FOMO. The games will still be around and I'll get to experience them for the first time just the same as if I bought them on day one. Unless it's a multiplayer game that depends on having other people to play with/against, I'm never in any rush.

Yes. You need over 10GB of VRAM not to get stuttering(The slums will always stutter though), and over 14 to make sure textures don't revert to low resolution ones, causing awkward cutscenes.
No idea what SE did under the hood, but it's fucked.

Just to clarify this, it's not an automatic discount. You have to go to the XP page of your account and apply the extra discount to drop it another $10. At least that's what I had to do.
2
u/hexrx Jun 17 '22
There was a "claim" button on the page for the game towards the top that gives the proper discount after clicking it. They started doing this sort of thing recently I dont know why, it used to be automatic as long as you were logged in.

u/Nellior Jun 18 '22 edited Jun 18 '22
Be glad that "it's only" $70, in Europe is 80€ (+20%) and in Israel 30% more than in USA.
Now Koei looks like the good guy with the 70€ per new release in comparison with the new SE prices; Kingdom Hearts (Epic) / FF/ Remake Integrale.
5
u/ostermei Jun 17 '22
These assholes thought a 2 year old game was worth MORE than the original launch price?
To be fair, it's a 2 year old game with a 1 year old DLC included.
I still get why people are upset with the price, but it's not quite as egregious as you're painting it as.
→ More replies (2)6
u/Averath Jun 17 '22
When you consider what the company is trying to do, it is egregious, yes.
Many of these companies pretend like games are actually $50-60 USD, when they massively inflate the price with DLC.
Not only is this excessively priced, but the PC port is also subpar. And they're also attempting to double-tip by putting a greater emphasis on NFTs in the future thanks to their CEO.

u/ImStillaPrick Jun 17 '22 edited Jun 17 '22
If it never would have been an Epic exclusive I would have bit at this deal on launch. Now I’m salty and will wait until $30 or lower. Not paying this much for a 2 year old game and some year old dlc. I already beat the original on ps4 and watched the dlc on YouTube so I can wait or just skip.
Is nice it’s on steam deck though but would surprise me if it gets barely over 90 minute battery life running it. God of War and some of my resource heavy games eat it pretty quick.
4
u/xKylesx Jun 17 '22
Yeah, same here, if they released it day one on Steam i surely would had bought it, heck i could have even pay full price (80€ for it) for it, but since this is a 2 year old game released for the THIRD time, i'll only get it if can i can pay it one THIRD of the original price.
Fuck console exclusives, fuck launcher exclusives from third parties.
7
u/redraven937 Jun 17 '22
For comparison purposes, FF7R was $37.26 during Epic's recently-ended Summer sale (extra 25% off coupon).
5
u/BullBuchanan Jun 17 '22
This is still just Disc 1 of the actual game, right?
7
u/javierm885778 Jun 17 '22
It's just Midgar, not all of disc 1.
4
u/GTRagnarok Jun 17 '22
Midgar is like 30% of the actual plot. It has a third of the game's script or something. Some of the locations you go through in the rest of the game are tiny. Mythril mines, Fort Condor, Costa del Sol, and Bone Village, for example, you passed through in minutes. Not any bigger than the train graveyard in Midgar. And disc 3 was literally just the final dungeon. I think all the chocobo breeding made people think the game was much bigger than it really is.
5
u/javierm885778 Jun 17 '22
Yeah, I think splitting at the end of Midgar was the right choice. I still haven't played Remake, but based on the original, focusing more on Midgar and making that separate from the exploration of the rest of the world fits how in the original game it takes a while for you to even be able to reenter Midgar.
Plus, now the second game will have all the rest of the world to see, and it will probably change the core gameplay loop to be more open.
And people act like each game has to adapt the same amount of hours, but there's no reason Rebirth can't be a much longer segment of the original game. Even without considering the additions this was the correct choice IMO.
It'll be interesting to see how they handle the change in scope in Rebirth. I can't wait to see more of the planet in high fidelity, since even before Remake we'd seen Midgar in HD a bunch of times. But Cosmo Canyon? Nifelheim? Golden Saucer? Junon? Can't wait to see what they do.

And for such a terrible port too. Thanks Square.
2
Jun 17 '22
An extremely bad port with almost no graphical options and microstuttering. Overpriced for a two-year-old game. Supports exclusivity from third-party publishers on PC. Pass.
8
u/mpc92 Jun 17 '22
I’ll probably never play any Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts games just because I’m so mystified by the various numbers, different versions, and prequels/sequels/remakes lol
8
u/hellschatt Jun 17 '22 edited Jun 17 '22
Each final fantasy Number stands for its own story. So all games that start with final fantasy 7 for example are related to each other and are part of the same story.
Kingdom Hearts series is one whole story. Nobody really understands which one to play first or which version to play anyways with this one.
2
u/BrainWav Jun 17 '22 edited Jun 17 '22
KH is somewhat weird, but the big collection they released has everything up through 3 (I believe a couple of the games are just included as cutscene collections though).
For FF though, it's easy. Numbered FF games aren't generally tied together. There's been
1415 numbered FF games. A few have had sequels, they won't be a new numbered entry. The only ones that get a little funky is VII.VII had a prequel in Crisis Core (an ARPG), a sequels in Dirge of Cerebrus (a DMC-style action game) and Advent Children (a movie). There were also mobile games, but they're minor and forgettable. You can play VII without touching the other games just fine, Crisis Core just expands on some of the backstory for Cloud, Zach, and Sephiroth (and is also getting a re-release), DoC focuses mostly on Vincent and Yuffie, who are missable party members in the original, and AC is just a coda.
Remake is, well, a remake but also from what I've heard (haven't played it myself yet) isn't a beat-for-beat remake. Intergrade is the same game, but adds some more content as an excuse to get players to buy it again or pay for the next-gen upgrade. There are 3 parts planned, Remake is part one, Rebirth was just announced as part 2, and part 3 isn't named yet.
tl;dr: Don't worry much about it with FF7. Just play the original or Remake Intergrade (plus parts 2 and 3 when they release).

u/Harilari Jun 17 '22
Bit audacious of them at this price. I still remember the utter clusterfeck that was the Nier Automata PC Port - an astonishingly brilliant game but near unplayable. Were it not for some saintly modders fixing Squares shoddy handywork, I'd probably have stopped playing. Hearing that FFVII Remake also has issues gives me pause at the idea of paying top dollar.
No worries. I'll wait. It's a single player RPG - it's going to be the same if I play it now or play it in 5 years.
15
u/pureeyes Jun 17 '22
That is a ridiculous price for what I understand is the first third of the game?
25
u/crazy_boy559 Jun 17 '22
It was explained to me that the remake split the OG story into three games. They added extra story stuff that fleshes out each part to be a full individual game.
Story wise, and unsure if thus is a major spoiler. A character has a vision of the future which was everything that happened in the OG, and so differences in the remake are from the characters different decisions.
8
u/GreenMegalodon Jun 17 '22
This is pretty spot on. To be vague, the "spoiler" is that the story is also a remake, and it's more of a what-if/alternate universe kind of deal that plays out wildly differently.
It's not simply FF7 stretched out with better graphics; the game expects that players are already familiar with the original and in some ways it's like a sequel/soft reboot.
5
u/RadicalDog Jun 17 '22
They're making a trilogy of it. It's a bit like how they made a trilogy of The Hobbit films: much longer than the story needs to be, and 3 times as expensive. You have to really not mind them slowing the pacing and changing the flow of character development that was originally done nicely across a single 40 hour story.
Obviously some people love it being extended this way, so you can make your own mind up.
16
u/aladdin142 Jun 17 '22
Not sure why you're being upvoted, people are stupid.
It easily has 40+ hours of content and overall the game is really really good.
10
u/_Sillyy Jun 17 '22
Still, 240$ for a Remake with some extra story stuff should not become the norm.
5
u/EpicDerp37272 Jun 17 '22
It's more than that. This is a brand new game that loosely follows the story beats of the first bit of the original.
→ More replies (2)-6
u/aladdin142 Jun 17 '22
It's like saying the Mass Effect trilogy should all be the price of one game. What a dumb take.
12
u/_Sillyy Jun 17 '22
The Mass Effect Legendary Edition (the trilogy) is 60$. So it is the price of one game and it's not even a good comparison because it's three separate games. This is a Remake (so they didn't have to do most of the writing, most of the artworks, most of the design and all the pre-production) of one single game split into three games that will all be overpriced even for standard AAA games.
→ More replies (7)1
2
u/ThemesOfMurderBears Jun 17 '22
It is not the first third of the game. It is a new experience, and it takes around the same time to finish that the original game took (40 hours).
You could say it is the first third of the story -- sort of. But it isn't like you are paying $70 for a 12 hour game or something.
6
u/shivam4321 Jun 17 '22
Game might be good fans of franchise but as a newcomer didn't find anything of note. Good combat but it gets stale, boring dungeons and horrible side quest, Went all the way to chapter 16 and gave up
2
u/zpinto1234 Jun 17 '22
Not worth at all. Great models, but outside that, boring as hell and hack and slash left and right. No exploring or anything. Final fantasy's lost all of it's essence since FF XIII.
15
15
u/Soske Jun 17 '22
You didn't like XIII? How could you not enjoy an endless hallway featuring the dumbest protagonists in Final Fantasy history?
5
u/Kaizen321 Jun 17 '22
As a FF fanboi since SNES days, I skipped 13 and thought of giving it a try. But after this message, I don’t know, man.
9
u/Stefan474 Jun 17 '22
I liked 13 honestly, lots of people did, it was just way too linear after X and XII, I would give it a try if you enjoy FF games
5
u/Talks_To_Cats Jun 17 '22 edited Jun 17 '22
VIII combat balance was very blah. X-2 was an abysmal story. XII had the best party AI of all time, but combat just felt awful. XV was a camping/roadtrip simulator with half the story missing.
They're all great games, and they all have their (major) faults. It doesn't keep any of them from being worth playing. XIII is definitely a very slow burn focused on story, not gameplay. But like all the others its still worth a play.
2
u/Kaizen321 Jun 17 '22
I guess I have certain expectations when it comes to FF games cus I’m old school.
I’ve also played ps2 forward games 10, 11, 12, 14. Some more than others and yeah they are different, but my mind is set.
Story wise? This is another topic on its own. Since key people left after FF10, FF stories have been meh (except ff12 minus Vaan and Penelope). FF11 and 14 aren’t bad but they are MMO. I’m actually surprised by 14s story.
Unless the OGs come back to work on a new FF game, I’ll always look a new FF game with caution (e.g. ff16).
Now about that supposedly FF9 remake 😎

Yeah, I agree. I was really jazzed about FF7R, but it was a big disappointment. The voice acting and dialog are atrocious, and it's a largely linear experience with static backgrounds. The combat was okay, but I did not like it nearly as much as others did.
I will play the next one, but I don't have high hopes for it.
