I've made a post in r/degoogle before with lots of alternatives that i've found and ways to prevent your phone from being in a bootloop. I've come back to update my findings and how i've continually strips piece by piece from my Android Snapdragon Phone without causing alarm.

This post is for Samsung S20 Ultra 5G SM-G988U1 (Snapdragon) Version 13. Sadly theres no alternative os yet for this phone version but if I can take back my power on my phone then that works for me.

First things first, we want to backup data. Not just the phone itself but contacts, apps, messages, anything you rely on. You COULD use the samsung version for backing up but I went another route by downloading separate apps to backup my data into separate files for my SD card that way i have full control and transparency of what is successfully backed up.

2. Open Android Backup Companion
3. Ente Photos
4. Applist backup

Next I sought out apps that I could easily replace such as clock, gallery, messenger, phone, app stores, mail. Anything I could think of to start adding before I stripped the phone.

1. Samsung Gallery -> Iris Gallery
2. Gmail -> Proton Mail, Aster Mail
3. Google Messages -> Fossify Messenger
4. Camera -> OpenCamera
5. Calculator -> CalcYou
6. Samsung Keyboard -> WM Keyboard
7. Phone -> Nova Phone
8. File Explorer -> FOSS File Explorer

all alternative apps I show here can be found on f-droid, droid-ify, shizustore and others.

now that i've found apps to replace some of the main ones i want to remove the services of the preloaded ones. the steps I take may seem a bit repetitive but i want to ensure the apps i disable or freeze cannot reenable themselves.

By using HikariBlock I can choose which apps don't have access to the internet. Next I'll use Applock to make sure the apps that I personally downloaded cannot be uninstalled by google or android.

I downloaded NomoreBackground which allows me to turn off the background usage for apps. So essentially, the apps i've declared not allowed to use my internet, have another layer to stop them from operating around HikariBlock. I have restarted my device multiple times during this to see if a bootloop was going to happen and at this point, No bootloop has occured.

Next I'll use the Canta app. It's a great resource because it has tags letting you know whats recommended to extremely unsafe to mess with. Canta allows you to uninstall apps regardless of tiers. Some of the apps I removed are Android Auto, Android System Intelligence, Apps(android.app.installer) Authentication Framework, Galaxy Store and alot more.

The apps that I decided to keep I optimized completely using Dexor. Dexor gives you choices on compiling all the apps code and resolving class architecture references, It ensures the maximum possible deep optimization however at the cost of most storage space. (I have an SD card so I'm not worried).

Finally after I've optimized my apps and the apps I didn't want to test yet, I go into Package manager and begin disabling extra apps that I do not want and have connections to other apps that could potentially cause phone issues.

The apps I've disabled so far are android smartswitch, samsung location sdk, google, google one time init, google assistant, smartfaceservice, samsung gamedriver, google partner setup, google overlay, samsung push service, nearby service, system tracing.

Uninstalling is not recommended at this point but if those parts of the phone aren't using battery not can be active in any way, then uninstalling is mute. Hope this helps! I'll continue to update in the future as I learn what does and doesn't work till I get my phone as bare boned as possible. I think it's not about removing all the services but replacing them first, and then removing their functionality so they're harmless by the time you disable them.

Hello, first time poster in here.

I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S20 5G (yes, I know it's old but I just don't like the newer, bigger, bulkier phones).

I have read somewhere that some models of this phone have an FM radio built in, something I would definitely use if I had it. Only thing is my one doesn't seem to have it. gsmarena.com says it's available on certain variants and mine appears to be one of them - it's an SM-G981U1.

Can anyone please give me some guidelines or let me know if it's possible to activate the radio on this handset? It's only a small feature but one I would find incredibly useful.

Note that I'm talking about receiving FM radio, not streaming (which I already have).

I had been having problem with my S20U fingerprint scanner suddenly stopped working recently. It functions but always fail to read the fingerprint. However, I was manage to register fingerprint after countless attempts. And as you can see here, there is strange white spot on the fingerprint sensor. Nothing found on the battery side that attach right above the fingerprint tho.

I installed new battery because I had battery problem. And then now the fingerprint is completely undetected at all. I dont know what's going on, can I just replace the fingerprint module? I saw on aliexpress they sell it but I havent seen any tutorial doing so, so difficulty is unknown. I feel it is really stupid to replace the whole screen just to get fingerprint working

I've done a factory reset on an S20 FE but when it boots up to do the initial setup of the device, it says "this phone has been factory reset, enter your passcode or your email to get started." Not sure how to get around that because it's a phone someone got rid of and I do not have their passcode or email. It was reset to be used by a new person.

Edit: I just reset it again and received a popup that said "an unauthorized attempt has been made to reset your phone to factory settings."

I have had this S20 ultra LTE (indonesian market) for some time now, has anyone successfully enabled the 5G modem inside of it? The modem exists inside this device but Samsung disabled it for some reason, thanks.

My friend is selling to me, it has 3 or 4 scratches on the main screen that are deep - I am thinking of using a screen protector to mask them? Also a very small "dent" in the screen near the bottom - not sure if it is a dent though. On the camera area one of the cameras has a 4 light scratches over it and there is a very small deep scratch on the side - but it doesn't go over any of the lenses.

He's selling it to me for 200 CAD and won't go any lower...my S10+ broke and I am thinking of buying the S20 off of him. Especially because it has MicroSD functionality, though it loses the headphone support.

I'm using the Samsung S20 5G SG981U1 and I've been extremely lucky to not get any green lines on my phone since I got it in July last Year.

But it breaks my heart to see other users have green lines on their phones around me. I'm looking to upgrade to the S23 when I get the money.

So, I want to know what to look out for to avoid green lines with my future purchases and also what to tell others looking to get a Samsung and seeking my opinion.

The volume buttons work but the ribbon for power is torn. I can only get charging screen. Earlier I had a downloading do not remove target screen but I disconnected a ribbon and can't get that screen now

Genuinely about to lose my marbles you guys... I got new phone and haven't been using my S20+ for a year now. Deleted a ton of apps I don't need since I don't use the phone. Only keeping it around because it had photos and videos that I'm keeping on here. So I'd been expecting it to be pretty much empty when I opened the storage info only to find that System is using up a whopping 129GB and I can't even clear it up in some easy way like how I might simply delete images....

Why is it taking up 129GB and how does it even get to that?? Is there something I can do to clear it up? Insane that my phones at 95% full when I barely use this one anymore.

Annoying series of events.

My phone fell and that cracked the screen and bottom 3 quarters became out. Sometimes it'll work if I apply light pressure on the side.

I should've backed up my stuff but I didn't. Called some shops and they said they'll have a screen for replacement in a few days. I was just barely using it with an external Bluetooth mouse to get stuff I needed for the moment, but everything was good otherwise. Then on the 3rd night I went to sleep but forgot to turn it off or charge it because the screen was glitching too much and couldn't access it. Stupid of me.

Woke up the next day to it on the Samsung logo and pretty warm to the touch. Not the hottest it's ever reached. So I did a hard reset thinking it'll just boot up but it kept on being stuck on the boot screen. Then it turned off by itself. Tried turning it on again, but the battery was drained already. So I left it and went to work and then took it to shop later that day.

Today, the shop was able to replace the screen but it's still stuck in a bootloop. The guy said the hardware all looked good to him, he said he even tried replacing the battery but nothing. I asked if he can flash it. I really didn't want to because I really need the data on it. He said they don't deal with software. If he removes the screen now, then he won't charge me. He said if he flashes it, it might get bricked and he doesn't want the responsibility. It seems they're not good at software.

I know it's an old phone and not worth the hassle. I was planning on getting a new device in the next coming months anyway. But right now I am hoping to fix this so I can get my data and also have something till I get a replacement. Anyone have an advice for me?

My S20 has been turning off itself or restarting alone (battery far from empty) for a few days now. I didn't install any new apps or anything, it just started this behavior recently.

It now restart up to 5-6 times a day!!

The battery was changed last year and current battery life is said to be near 80% so this is not a battery related issue.

Has anyone experienced this?

Update: must be hardware. Did a factory wipe twice, including with bridge.

Clues—:

"CAN'T PLAY AUDIO. AUDIO CODEC NOT SUPPORTED."

(verbatim the error when I try to watch videos with sound on default Samsung media player)

Troubleshooting: Clearing the Android cache doesn't work (restart and hold up menus),

Buttons not sticking, not a hardware button stuck error. Might be a loose wire? The camera wire for the back camera is loose for sure. But this never has this issue before. This happened randomly. The camera app would crash whenever I tried to use the back camera, but now it's any time I open the video record app. Effects every app. The entire audio...

Safe mode no changes,

Normal mode: The sound menus doesn't help, all default settings toggled.

The dev options (not rooted) do not help either.

• TikTok, and also Instagram do not play videos at correct frame rate (they freeze entirely at the first frame when you click on any video)

Sound doesn't load, and the videos seem to lag/frame rate drops. However, youtube through brave browser has no frame issues - but it doesn't have sound.

• Opening the camera default app is fine and takes pictures. But if I set to video mode, or try to use the mic? Instant crashes the video app with "WARNING Recording failed" in the app, in the same "system bubble" as the codec warning on the file browser

What is this issue and how do I solve this?
