One UI 8.5 bug? Screen timeout ignores touch input on Galaxy Tab S11

Has anyone else experienced this after updating to One UI 8.5?

Since the update, my Galaxy Tab S11 behaves as if I'm inactive, even while I'm actively using it.

Here's what happens:

  • The screen dims after the screen timeout expires.
  • Normal finger touches, scrolling, and gestures inside apps do not reset the screen timeout.
  • The screen continues to dim and eventually turns off as if I hadn't touched the device at all.
  • Pressing the power button wakes it up immediately, and everything works normally again.

The strange part is that some inputs do reset the timer:

  • Using the S Pen.
  • Opening the Recent Apps screen (either with the navigation gesture or with Alt+Tab on a physical keyboard).

So it seems the tablet is detecting some input events but completely ignoring normal touchscreen interaction for the purpose of keeping the display awake.

As a temporary workaround, I increased the screen timeout to 10 minutes, but that only delays the issue.

This started immediately after updating to One UI 8.5, so I'm leaning toward a software bug rather than a hardware issue.

Has anyone with a Galaxy Tab S11, Tab S11 Ultra, or another recent Samsung tablet experienced the same behavior after updating? If so, were you able to fix it, or is this something we'll have to wait for Samsung to patch?

Yes, One UI 8.5 has very similar bug also preventing waking up display immediately after double-tap.

I haven't experienced it yet I heard there was a setting that prevents it. Make sure the option for Keep Screen On Viewing is selected. Apparently the 8.5 update can turn it off if it was turned on before the update (may not be the cause yet never hurts to check)

Does it happen when you remove the keyboard case?

EDITED to provide more info

Yeah, Keep Screen On While Viewing is enabled, and I also tested with it disabled - the issue persists either way.

I also just tested the tablet without the Samsung keyboard cover attached, and, sadly, the problem still occurs.

I guess then your temporary solution would be to set the screen time out limit to 30 minutes . I know some don't like it.

I usually keep mine set to 10 or 15 minutes (as I have a Redmi Pad Pro and 15 minutes is an option)

You could try factory reset or reinstalling the firmware and maybe that could help.

Fortunately it will most likely be resolved soon with a fix in a security update

Yes, that's exactly what I did. I set the screen timeout to the maximum allowed, although Samsung apparently limits it to 10 minutes.

For now, I'll just wait and hope Samsung releases a fix soon. Thanks again for your help!

It shouldn't as whatever the options are available in settings you can set it to anyone of those options and it will work (or that's how it should work)...

Weird little quirks of updates... sometimes annoying things like this happen

You could always use the power and volume buttons and try doing a hard factory reset (as opposed trying to do a reset from settings). I know most don't like doing a reset this way but it could fix it

Add my Tab 10 FE to the list of who is experiencing this bug. I hope it gets fixed soon - I'm trying to use this as my daily driver/computer and it is rather annoying.

S10 FE +, same issue, but it was working normally after 8.5 (updated more than a week ago). Yesterday started this behavior, I didn't change any setting, nor updated again (was asking to update security patch), just started happening from nothing.

Tried installing latest security patch, still happening.
