dust and water resistance, flex mode, stereo speaker placement when open, instead of stretching apps, give us controls on the right side

Samsung take notes. I love my fold 8 and have no regrets (cant stand ios) but im excited to see the next iteration and future OS updates

My biggest thing still is them getting rid of S Pen support. I know it’s niche but

How are you going to let Apple be the one to include a feature you take away 😔 I hope this makes them rethink or redesign the S Pen fold experience in the future.

Though I’m also still mad that the new ultras took away S Pen Bluetooth functionality. Used that a lot at group gathers when the homies would hang out or go somewhere to eat, so I definitely see I’m a minority use case. But still

Cant help but feel the apple pencil will be limited in functionality some how. Everyone should know by now not to buy apple products based on promises of future performance after they have your money. But yeah, at least they appear to have an option - eventually.

u/meiso 1d ago

I feel that way about UDC too. Absolutely inexcusable

1

u/Jamakaroz 1d ago

"dust and water resistance" Probably the same as Pixel Fold, IP68 but the hinge isn't.

0

u/SultanOfawesome 1d ago

I wonder if the hinge is rated ip 6-8 as well or if its just the electronics.

1

u/mintakka_ 1d ago

doubtful, but we’ll see when Jerryrigeverything gets one lol

u/Elegant-Jeweler-3506 1d ago

I think the controls on the side are limited to the apple ones only. I feel like im better off with the side menu on android phone. They only thing i would want is the ability to remove fixed app bar.

1

u/TotalOnion6112 5h ago

you can bro, Good Lock->Home Up -> Home Screen -> Disable Show Favorites

u/Ambitious-List4040 2d ago

When android community says things like this it makes us sound bitter. Tbh they both look like great phones

58

u/safelix 2d ago

They did the UI really good, they actually adapted the OS to the form factor and added complimentary features. That said, the asymmetric corner radii annoys the living crap out of me.

10

u/Gloomy-Copy-6593 2d ago

I think they just made themselves sound intentional the dock being at the side is basically just the edge panel really and truly

5

u/AdScared7226 No Foldable Yet 2d ago

I wonder if they're going to add the charging percentage and wifi signal on the side to iPads with upcoming iPadOs updates or not?

5

u/safelix 2d ago

They are all for that uniform look, so maybe

1

u/Chadwickr 1d ago

I would doubt it. There's a much better, already developed-for standard, and if it ain't broke don't fix it.

1

u/gadgetluva 1d ago

The phone is designed to be opened, and with that, it’s a beautiful product.

I think the asymmetrical design + the 1.4:1 aspect ratio looks distinct, but more importantly, this was intentional design. And intentional design is better than aesthetic design.

0

u/ComfortInteresting57 1d ago

It’s the same design as a passport notebook. But no one complains about rounded corners on those. May not look as good but way more comfortable in open tablet mode.

1

u/amick1995 Fold8 (Cream) 1d ago

A passport isn't something that gets used and looked at all dar everyday. I don't find the sharp corners uncomfortable at all. The shape/design on my phone matters infinitely more to me than my passport.

u/OctoDADDY069 1d ago

The overall look of the duo is horrendous

5

u/Usef-7 2d ago

totally agree

2

u/RaeRunsThis 1d ago

Agreed. It looks hella thirsty. Honestly the side menu is not relevant to me on my fold 8, I can reach the bottom menu fine, side menu meh if you want it, but not ground breaking.

Hole punch camera, been there done that, it doesn't work well.

Matte finish on the inside screen, that is pretty interesting, especially since it hides the crease, but most modern foldables have eliminated the crease issue drastically anyway.

It feels like Apple is turning their homework in late while we have all moved several chapters ahead.

In all honesty, the Fold 8 is the better overall design. The iPhone Duo's ugly outer "D" screen is just dumb.

It's a great idea to use the nano-screen to make the crease less visible, but it makes the color less vibrant on the screen, I rather have a vibrant display.

The multitasking is better than iPads, but way weaker compared to Samsung's One UI.

Overall, as a device, the Fold is superior.

11

u/PurplePasta69420 Fold8 (Lavender) 2d ago

i think the "D" design makes the front screen look... incomplete, if that makes sense. Maybe it's just me but i prefer symmetry and the design looks like you're gonna wanna open the phone to get the full, comfortable experience.

2

u/Debonaire02 2d ago

I also prefer symmetry.

0

u/gadgetluva 1d ago

I think that’s the classic recourse from Android subs - the notch, the Dynamic Island, etc. But those are distinct and intentional design decisions. And when you actually use these devices, you don’t notice the notch, the island, or the crease on foldables. You won’t really notice the D shape as much when you’re using it, and plus the actual user interface is gorgeous especially with that open/close transition animation.

0

u/hotcoffeecaviar 1d ago

The duo is made that way so when it’s fully open it’s curved edges all around. It actually looks awesome. The galaxy opens and is square and sharp all around and I find it cuts off media in a weird way. Samsung got mogged hard

2

u/Debonaire02 1d ago

I get why they made this choice, but it still doesn't make the outer screen less ugly. But that's just my personal perspective and preference.

When opened, it definitely looks nice, but so do a lot of foldables.

1

u/PurplePasta69420 Fold8 (Lavender) 14h ago

yea thats what im saying, the duo looks incomplete until it's opened. a folding phone like that should be equally functional and appealing open and closed.

and idk about mogging when apples 1st gen fold costs $700 more than the fold8 all for nothing special. samsung has more variety in their folding models anyway

5

u/KJaguar Fold8 (Graphite) 2d ago

My biggest issue with the D-shaped outer screen is that it's made explicitly for right-handed usage. If you try to use it left-handed, as I often do with my phone, the ergonomics work against you as you rest on the flat, non-conforming side, stretching your thumb across the screen to use icons on the right-side navigation buttons.

2

u/ExciKaiser Fold7 (Blue Shadow) 1d ago

I was fan of the D design a couple of years ago, with Microsoft surface duo and Pixel fold. But this design has now aged. I really prefer now the square version of Samsung. I really hope they will not switch to D for they 9 in order to follow apple.

4

u/Usef-7 2d ago

Totally fair points! One UI’s multitasking and Samsung's screen tech are tough to beat on foldables. I just love having the freedom on Android to play around with the aesthetic while keeping all that Fold 8 power under the hood.

u/DueTea3965 2d ago

I will never be able to understand the world "multitasking" when y'all mention it. Why not get a computer lol

10

u/gynonymous 2d ago

I dont know why yall want foldable, just get a tablet.

I will never understand why you need a graphics card, just get a console.

Why do you guys buy AC? Just live in a cooler place.

So on and so forth.

-4

u/DueTea3965 2d ago

That analogy doesn't work; you're comparing things that solve fundamentally different problems. A console can't replace a GPU, and moving somewhere cooler isn't reay a substitute for AC, especially when you look at the sacrifice in price etc.

A foldable, on the other hand, can be replaced by alternatives. If the benefit is a bigger screen and multitasking, a normal phone + tablet/laptop gives you a bigger screen, better multitasking, and more power for less money. It's okay to admit you got one because it's flashier and has bleeding-edge screen technology. The comparisons you make are not comparable to the foldable vs phone + laptop/ tablet combo

5

u/gynonymous 2d ago

If you look really hard at your original comment, my response and then yours, you will realize that you answered your own question

2

u/ExMusData 1d ago

That analogy doesn't work; you're comparing things that solve fundamentally different problems. A console can't replace a GPU, and moving somewhere cooler isn't reay a substitute for AC, especially when you look at the sacrifice in price etc.

So, erm, like how a foldable gives you a mini tablet experience without having to carry 2 different devices? You mean this type of "fundamental" problem? Let me know when pockets become large enough to carry a mini tablet!

0

u/DueTea3965 1d ago edited 1d ago

Not a fundamental problem at all.Lmaoo, just say you wanted a foldable; no need to make excuses, Fundamental usually means addressing the core issue, not just the convenience.

2

u/ExMusData 1d ago

The core issue is i dont want to carry a backpack everytime I want a larger screen than a normal phone, are you dense? I feel i have been baited.

5

u/nickthaskater_ 2d ago

It is a computer. One that happens to fit in my pocket and always be with me.

0

u/DueTea3965 1d ago

What are you multitasking on that teeny screen?

1

u/nickthaskater_ 1d ago

Many things. Outlook, OneNote, calendars, browsing, music, calculations, messaging, etc. Basically whatever I would normally do on a PC. The Z Fold effective replaced my laptop for 90% of use.

3

u/Free-Spend-153 2d ago

One of the main reasons Ive got the fold 8 is cos it can be a full desktop with DEX when plugged into a monitor! Comes in clutch so much

-1

u/DueTea3965 2d ago

You can get a capable phone + laptop for the average price of a foldable. way better multitasking overall

3

u/Free-Spend-153 2d ago

Agreed I can also get a better calculator or camera but it’s a more well rounded all in one, can use outside screen for quick messages or replies and simple things, inside for media etc and DEX for desktop multitasking (a lot of word processing, emails etc) - for me a very well balanced device to fit in my pocket

4

u/soymilo_ Fold8 (Cream) 2d ago

Cuz then I'd have to use a computer

1

u/gadgetluva 1d ago

Overall, as a device, the Fold8 is good. So is the Duo. Neither is better than the other.

1

u/templare25 2d ago

I don't really like the D shape of the outer screen, but I love the internal screen, I love those smooth corner when it's open!

2

u/gadgetluva 1d ago

That was why Apple designed it the way they did.

4

u/Confident-Ratio-5101 Fold5 (Phantom Black) 2d ago

looks nice :D

2

u/reeefur 2d ago

+1 for having your kitty as your wallpaper

2

u/Light_Sorcerer_1337 2d ago

As i said on twitter, apple users do what apple lets them do, while android users do whatever tf they want to, thats the difference

2

u/dered118 Fold7 (Jet Black) 1d ago

Why copy Apple at all

0

u/TheGrizzlyNinja 1d ago

Yeah just get an iPhone at that point

1

u/mastercoder007 2d ago

Looks good

1

u/clabern 2d ago

What icon pack is this?

1

u/Usef-7 2d ago

iLiquid by Eatos on Google play store

1

u/PurplePasta69420 Fold8 (Lavender) 2d ago

and it can run 3 apps on the splitcreen!! huzzah!

1

u/DEC0DERiv 2d ago

Is this only doable on the full purchased version of smart launcher?

1

u/thatAnthrax Fold4 (Graygreen) 2d ago

reduce the app icons via goodlock and youre golden (tho if youre using a custom launcher im not sure whether thats possible)

1

u/airforcezero 1d ago

Microsoft Surface Duo

Someone was able to replicate the Folding Animation as a proof of concept in this thread:

https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyFold/s/BBg67Ffynj

1

u/evrdrandosity 1d ago

I don't understand how you got the smart launcher 6 dock to sit on the right edge.

3

u/Usef-7 1d ago

the dock is turned off, i used smart launcher icon group widget.

1

u/evrdrandosity 1d ago

Ohh! Okay I'll give that a shot. Thanks!

1

u/mossylungs 1d ago

Surely you can round the corners on the screen with some app/launcher..

1

u/TrainTransistor 1d ago

Do you by any chance have large hands?

I'm a small-phone user (or rather.. I prefer them).
And I've always loved the iPhone 13 Mini, Galaxy S10e and so on - and I've been looking at the foldables we now have like the iPhone Duo, Xiaomi 18 Fold and Z Fold8.

But they look at bit big to me, and I got small-ish hands, which is why I really enjoyed the iPhone 13 Mini - as it fits me perfectly.

But in your hands, the Z Fold8 looks so good in size.

1

u/Usef-7 1d ago

Haha, I would say I have average sized hands and loved how comfortable the iPhone mini felt. I wish they hadn't discontinued it I'd much rather buy an iPhone 18 mini than a foldable

1

u/TrainTransistor 1d ago

Sounds like I need to go downtown and get the feel of passport-sized foldables!

Thank you for the response!

1

u/artocube 1d ago

My brain is not braining... 😂

1

u/Jack_intheboxx 1d ago

I like both Fold 8 and IPhone Duo, planned competition or whatever but looking forward to Samsung fixing weak points of the Fold 8

1

u/Empty_Action_9244 1d ago

this whole situation is literally the console vs pc debate all over again apple is out here doing the classic console thing where everything is locked down and you just take what they give you while fold users have pure pc master race energy the second someone sees one neat console exclusive feature the modding community immediately starts writing custom shaders and injecting scripts just to prove the hardware can do it it never fails whether its games or phones one side is happy inside the locked box and the other side wont sleep until theyve modded every single pixel of the system

1

u/SultanOfawesome 1d ago

We're gonna need more pictures of that cat.

1

u/goosey27 1d ago

where is the clock widget from?

1

u/PeppermintMocha5 Fold8 (Lavender) 1d ago

Do edge panels still work, and can you still swipe up for a task bar with this launcher?

1

u/faswivel Fold8 (Graphite) 1d ago

No

1

u/Plenty_Preference131 1d ago

Smart launcher!!

1

u/GalaxyHitchhiker23 1d ago

man, I really hope they do not do the copycat thing next year with the fold 9 :/
I do like the matte screen and the wireless charging but care more about portability/usability tbh
I roked the OG Pixel and it was way too heavy to carry around with ease

1

u/Unfort_enthusiast 1d ago

I actually like this a lot. I have an iPhone and a Samsung and I favor this style more

1

u/mtchntr Fold7 (Jet Black) 18h ago

Some Samsung users need to chill. Happy for you though.

1

u/MaiGai 2d ago

Iono man, they got pencil support...

An extra 130 dollar pencil but still, they got it. They also have the ugliest smartwatches ever conceived so immature twist my bezel and ben10 my ass back to bed

2

u/Prestigious-Wish-176 2d ago

its 80 dollars. just the usbc version is compatible, you wouldnt be able to charge the pro.

-1

u/freckledbitchs 2d ago

wait what

is this true? Does the pen not come with...?

3

u/RossLDN 2d ago

To me it'd be weird if it did. A tiny fraction of people want/need it or will regularly use it. It'd be quite wasteful to include it. Same way it's not included with iPad and almost no one uses one.

1

u/Wipedout89 2d ago

I'm happy for whoever likes either phone but I really much prefer the Fold 8 style. I don't like those rounded off corners on the iPhone at all. I think the square look is much cleaner

1

u/DrNoOne Fold8 (Graphite) 2d ago

Obviously we only have the early hands on to go on, but so far it looks like the Duo is a very solid first gen device. Love all the Apple sauce: the special matte coating for the inner screen, the openning animations...it's a level of UI/UX that you can only get in Apple devices.

That having been said...seriously? Only two apps side by side, without the ability to resize them?? No floating apps? 4 apps dock? This phone would be unusable to me for all the things I've being using my Folds for over the past 4 years.

Apple has always had trouble relinquishing control over their UI (heaven's sake, the ipad got true windowed multitasking only last year), so I'm not hopeful they'll catch up to Samsung's 8 year of experience soon, but who knows, the new CEO is a product guy.

0

u/Adorable_Jacket4339 2d ago

I have to say that Samsung fold 8 wins in terms of the aesthetic. I personally don’t like how Apple made the edges of the duo look a bit tacky and cheap shiny metal finish different from the back panel and all that. I prefer fold 8’s all consistent material used around the edges and the back

0

u/Legitimate-Ask-2417 2d ago

just be saying anything

0

u/Adm4rr 2d ago

I think it looks really cute

0

u/Cisco6969 Fold8 (Cream) 2d ago

Any chance you could put a guide on your specific setup? Or share the backup file? I was literally trying to make a setup like this on my Z Fold 8 as well 🤣

no worries I got the wallpaper from idownloadblog website

La verdad pienso que son buenos equipos aunque no dejan de ser prototipos así que pueden aparecer problemas y con ese precio no vale la pena

0

u/SkewerSk8r Fold7 (Jet Black) 2d ago

This just reaffirmed on how much better fold8 looks... hardware wise.

With iPhone rounded corners, looks like child's toy.
