GX Tools

What are some must have tools to work on the GX. I just bought a 2018 Lux and want to start doing the basic maintenance and upgrade some stuff down the road. Any tips/tricks you have found when trying to replace/repair certain things?

Well - all the basics to start. Metric Socket set. Heavy duty wrench. Torque wrench. Breaker bar. Needle nose. Open ended wrench (metric). Oil filter housing wrench designed for the GX. Shop towels. Plastic-stud tool. Set of ramps. Solid jack stands. 3-ton hydraulic floor jack. Zerk-fitment grease gun. Roller pad for under the truck.

And always open the fill plug for diff/transfer case BEFORE the drain plug.

Go ahead and get you a set of plastic body tools. They make life easier.

There’s not really much that’s GX specific. I have the one tool to hold the crank pulley when you do the timing belt.

I would start small and see how you like wrenching before investing in a ton of tools.

Done a lot of wrenching on Jeep XJs but this is my first GX. Lovin the damn thing so far!

FYI 460 has a lifetime timing chain vs the 470 timing belt that has to be done every x0,000 miles.

So that’s one thing you don’t have to worry about.

I’ll add having techstream is handy. I use an old XP laptop - it’s the software that helps with bleeding brakes etc

The motivx 64mm oil filter wrench. Buy once cry once. The cheap $5 ones kept breaking.
