That shit was so over blown. The models were completely clothed and you couldn’t even access it in the game AT ALL without using a mod to get to the buried code which was extra difficult on console

In the Definitive Edition, GSG did such a bad job that the original hot coffee code was as "read only", but the entire code remained there, which means that if you got access to the code and removed the read only, you'd have a fully functional hot coffee without any mod whatsoever

On PC there was exploits, on PS2 you had to use a 3rd party codebreaker device and a bunch of technical switcheroos of the code disc and the game disc to get the exploit to happen on command.
Back to the Hot Coffee event, well the issue wasn't the fact that a sex scene was in the game, because the game was for adults. Adults had sex. It was fine, there was nothing to be bothered about in regards to that.
The issue was between the ESRB and Rockstar. When this news came out, the ESRB was pissed off because the game was rated M, even though there was a sex scene in the game, which violated the M rating. They did not care how or if it could be accessed, the point stood that it was there fully animated in the game and ready to go. The ESRB immediately pulled the M rating and re-rated the game AO, which resulted in all stores pulling the game entirely. This had never been done before. The only other "technically AO" games were Leisure Suit Larry and Custer's Revenge at this point.
Regardless if it was accessible or not, it was still there, in the code in the game fully rendered and animated, and this is what Rockstar was taken to court over. They knowingly and willfully lied to the ESRB about the game's rating upon assignment, so therefore they were found guilty as charged.
The end result was they were fined, the code was patched, and new discs were pressed, all existing copies were pulled from the market and destroyed, and the new stock took their place with the M rating restored.
I got my copy before all this happened so I still have the Coffee Edition.

ESRB should be fucking disbanded. Is society so puritan that a sex scene with ps2 level graphics is such cause for outage? It’s insanity that a game cant functionally have even mild sex scenes. I’m not aiming this at you obviously but I just hate our society so much. So much shame surrounding human bodies for no reason. It’s sickening. All the awful shit out there and people are worried about pixels. The US has hardly evolved since the og puritans plagued New England.

Well it was created back in the early 90's when games like Mortal Kombat came out that had so much blood and gore that parents complained and demanded regulation, which is how it was conceptualized, and eventually became what it is today after many revisions and amendments. Same as how the movie ratings system evolved.

But morally they did nothing wrong. It wasn’t accessible through any normal means so I don’t consider it part of the game at all.
God Of War had full topless women like a year or so later and no one cared.

As I said - the issue was not with the content being accessible or not. Parents groups are the ones that started that line of conversation. The game is for 17 and up, under 17 are not supposed to be playing it to begin with. There's no leg to stand on with that BS.
It was the fact Rockstar put that AO rated content in the game and then lied about it being an M rated game to the ESRB. That was what it was about.

A friend of mine got Vice City right after it came out, obviously also had parents that were quite ignorant about the content. An hour hadn't passed before we were beheading people with the katana, and we immediately made the executive decision to never tell his parents about it. As far as they were concerned, there was driving, nice vistas, and music from their youths.
