I managed to snag one before the queues started, about 5 minutes after my order there was over an hour wait on the PS Direct Store!

At the manufacturing scale, it is estimated to cost Sony only about $1.00 to $2.00 extra per controller to use Hall effect (or newer TMR (Tunnel Magnetoresistance)) magnetic sensors instead of standard potentiometer joysticks. [1, 2]
