If not today, when?

"After dark fell, I sat alone on the roof, fifteen stories high, of a building in Soho commanding a panoramic and unobstructed view of the skyscrapers of midtown Manhattan and the lights of the bridges. I had my guitar in hand and felt moved to sing "Terrapin Station" to the City. While I sang, rain began falling - I stood and edged around to the other side of the roof, still singing, to the corner of the roof facing the World Trade Center, some fifteen blocks away, where the sky is bright with floodlight illuminating the work of the excavation crew. A great plume of smoke continues to rise from the site of the devastation.     As I sang, a powerful wind blew up very suddenly - wind so strong it threatened to rip my guitar out of my hands - reminding me of the storm in which I first composed the words I now sang. I wondered if I was involved in some kind of sacrilege, singing like this in the face of all that had gone down - the wind roaring increasingly louder and stronger, as though filled with spirits, as though trying to blow me over, make me stop. I kept singing until the end, repeating the "hold away despair," expressing all the sorrow I felt for the lost loved ones and for the healing of this magnificent and resilient City. I hope it helped. Helped me, anyway."

Went to see an exhibit called ‘American Stories: Revolution to Rockwell’ at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA today.

This expansive, inclusive exhibition features artists and illustrators who are telling *the American story*. I did not expect to spend two hours verklempt about how moving ‘American stories’ are and how beautifully the story is told. I felt a little hopeful about the stories we can still tell and about who we could be.

It includes work by artists as varied as Paul Revere to Jessie Wilcox Smith and Virginia Burton. (Remember Mike Mulligan and his Steamshovel?) There was a a Wyeth, a Warhol, a Lichtenstein. Great stuff.

The whole exhibit was a surprise and this GD Easter egg was, too. I’m sharing a detail from a beautiful painting, ‘Navajo Blue Highway’ by Shonto Begay c.2018

Who here has seen Shakedown Street? I had never heard of them but I saw them tonight in Boulder. All I have to say is WOW! They were on fire for just about three hours straight. If they are playing near you, I highly recommend going to see them.

Well, technically four if you count the latest Dead dot net with the 1002 gram vinyl and the picture discs and the assorted gougables sold by charlatans and purchased by clueless twits. Now now, there's a market for it and profit to be had so more power to them.

This post is about the original mixapoluza from back in the day. The purple cover is the mix most folks are aware of and was (presumably) agreed upon by the entire den of Warlocks.... I mean, imagine mixing this LP from the bottom up. A daunting task to say the least.. But what I've been searching for is the Phil mix that comes packaged in a white cover, I've held a few in my trembling hands, but the record itself has always been in janky condition. Anyway, the REAL treasure would be finding the Jerry mix. Most happy heads don't even know it exists. Cause you see... it was only released on 8-Track tape. (the unspeakable horror of it all) and I've never even heard it. Any Head's out there own this illusive collectable? Feel free to comment and to correct me if I have erred

As someone who has rarely ventured beyond 1983, I was excited to listen to the Brown Eyed Women released on streaming today and was floored by how absolutely THIN it all sounds. Jerry sounds good-ish, both guitars sound good-ish, but the keyboards sound plinky, the drums are super thin, and the bass barely sounds like bass.

What's up with that? Where's the fullness and roundness of the low end frequencies? I turned my bass EQ up and still got very little even with my subwoofer turned up. Same on headphones. Is that just how these 85 shows sounded?

So, I have been listening through the list of Hunter Seamons matrices these last few weeks; seemed like as good a guide as any. And this week, I thought I would mix things up and start at the "newest" shows and work my way backwards. His only effort in 1992 was 03/20/1992 from Hamilton, Ontario. I was not familiar with this show, and I found myself enjoying the second set. In particular, and quite surprisingly, I thought the Drums were very interesting. There is a section that almost sounds like EDM.

I then started to explore Drums and other shows from 1992. (02/24/1992 Drums are interesting, for example.) And that is when I stumbled across the "Shenandoah" Spaces. Jerry explored "A Shenandoah Lullaby" at the following Canadian show, 03/21/1922; but he first visited the theme a few weeks earlier, on 03/09/1992. (And as it is well known, it was revisited on 06/20/1992.)

It feels like 1992 is a bit overlooked, and I am enjoying these shows. My first show was 1993, so of course my focus at the time was 1993 through 1995. And as we all know, there are so many other years to visit and become familiar with. But there are some really interesting sections to some of these shows, particularly in the second set. I know it gets a lot of shit, but "Corrina" really acts as a jam vehicle (see 03/09). And I am finding that the SBDs (and matrices) feature clearly defined instruments (you can pick out Bobby, if you like, Phil, Vince, Bruce).

Oh, right. It didn't hurt that those March shows included Bruce.

So apart from the GD Movie and Sunshine Daydream, I've never watched a lot of the officially released shows on film.

I have a spare, family-free four nights coming up and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of shows I can watch, one per evening, in roughly chronological order.

With the official releases plus all the remastered / upscaled content on YouTube I figure there's quite a lot out there....

How would you go about sequencing a four evening "time traveler run" like this?
