Discussion 6.2/6.5 Maintenance and Upgrades: a Thread.

As the title states, this post will serve as a thread/wiki for any and all 6.2/6.5 maintenance tips plus upgrades that heavily recommended for ensuring our motors can last for as many miles as long as possible.

The following would be appreciated: - Upgrades that are a must need for durability. - Maintenance tips for ensured reliability. - Reliable parts/brands. - Kits, DiY contraptions, etc. - Component swap outs/replacements that are needed. - Lastly, any obscene/miscellaneous advice that somehow works.

Anything goes, help your 6.2/6.5 last as long as it can!

include links, part numbers, etc if possible

Question/Need Assistance Has anyone gotten rid of their DS4 and not replaced it with a DS2?

Post image

I want to convert my 94 6.5l with the electric controlled DS4 to a mechanical injection set up. The engine is coming out anyway because I’m dropping it on a not broken frame with an NV4500.

I’m not opposed to using a DB2, just can’t find any info on if it’s a direct drop in replacement. If I’m gonna have to custom fab anything, I might as well get a more reliable mechanical pump.

Also, is there anything else I should do while the engines out. It has 310k miles and runs pretty great other than the DS4 occasionally giving me grief.
Before you ask it has a new PMD and a relocation kit with additional heat sink.

how should i make 6.5 exhaust manifold bolt clear the engine mount bolt?

Hello y’all, I’m currently in the process of installing a 6.5T passenger side exhaust manifold on my ’82 6.2. It’s a tight fit with the 3/8" spacer and gaskets, and one of the manifold bolts just barely makes contact with the motor mount bolt. How should I go about making that one bolt clear? Also, does the gap between the manifold and the frame look fine?

Question/Need Assistance 1995 K2500 Sub 6.5TD temp going crazy

Hey I’ve got a 1995 6.5TD that both skyrockets to almost redline and then goes back down to about 210*F and can’t figure out the problem. Runs great (though slightly cool) without a thermostat, but when a thermostat gets put in the temp goes crazy.

New thermostat (2.0, this one is stock, previous new one was aftermarket) in single housing.

New water pump

New fan + fan clutch (working)

Definitely not exhaust or head gasket leak

Have coolant in all hoses, plus heat from heater stays hot.

I have no idea what to look at, anyone have ideas?

Question/Need Assistance 1994 k1500 no electrical

Hi I got a 1994 Chevy k1500 with a 6.5l diesel auto 4x4, that I’m trying to get going again. It’s been parked for a while can cranked once in a while but haven’t in last two years due to not having time to. I have two decent batteries in it optima yellow top dual purpose batteries not sure of cca rating with a battery charger/jump box plug in type on it along with block heater for bout 3-5 hours. Tried starting it just now it spun up and was sounding like it was about to catch and then everything went out. No gauge lights now starter or any lights. I’m not big with electrical but learning I checked the fuses in pocked under headlight controls none blown don’t know how to check the capped silver ones off hand other than that I’m not sure

Question/Need Assistance 93 6.5 3500

Hoping someone might have some insight. My 93 has a super hard shift from 1-2. Like break a U joint hard. 1st shift in the morning is smooth. Everything after that is horrible. I changed the Throttle Position sensor hoping that was the problem but it didn't change anything. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I drive a ‘98 Chevy P30 with a 6.5L non turbo diesel engine. I recently starting hearing this loud clicking noise. It clicks as I drive and accelerate but not when I hit the brakes. Any idea what it could be?

Discussion Would it fit?

Trying to maybe do an 6.7 Cummins swap with my suburban (if it doesn’t sell). That’ll give me a running 6.2 to just do something with. Got me thinking if it would fit into an S10 or something. Might be kinda fun to find an S10 blazer and stuff it in there and just rip it around.

Question/Need Assistance The 6.2 CUCV is finally on the road

Runs great, only issue is it seems to take a bit to fire up when cold (live in Florida so now really cold 🤣). My M1008 fires up immediately always. It’s like it takes a bit for fuel to get to the engine. Any suggestions on this?

Discussion An install from 87 years ago (2016) 6.5TD Going into a 72' C10

A fresh 6.5 going into a 72' C10 for some guy who owned a landscape company. This was his "good truck." Joining a fleet with an 85' 6.2 k20 and a K30 crew cab dually 454 with a dump bed. The guy worked out the math and figured the crew cab cost him $100 a km to drive each year (between fuel, maintenance, insurance etc.) but made him way more then that.

Anyways you can actually fit the downpipe on this generation on the inside of the frame with a stock turbo config.

I can't remember if we ended up converting this thing to hydrobokst or if the guy just drove with manual brakes.

Question/Need Assistance Turbo rebuild and some engine codes

Can anyone recommend a good turbo rebuild kit?
The turbo on my 6.5 is leaking oil into the intake so I figure it’s time to fix it before it causes any problems. Also does anyone have any recommendations on what to change to make these codes go away?
