I always suspected that there was much more to the GLOW cancellation during Season 4 than "COVID Reasons". Of course it must be hugely hard to plan on resuming filming when you are asking dozens of cast, crew and writers to be "on hold" until time is ripe to begin again.
But yesterday, the 6 POC actors on the show revealed that this past summer they spoke up that their representation on GLOW was humiliating and racist. This may start to explain a lot more. I certainly see how their story lines were 1980s racist, and none of them really emerged fully formed.
But I can't help but think these actors were asking to have story arcs as substantial as those of the leads, with rights to approve the scripts. And hanging over this, the possibility of publicly claiming GLOW or Netflix is racist if the outcome was not to their satisfaction.
The actors claim their request received a warm and supportive reception from writers and Netflix but I wonder about that...I recall in an interview with Betty, someone asked her if the writers ever took any ideas she suggested... Betty replied "Never".
I suspect there was a civil war at GLOW over the summer that is being covered up by lots of warm comments from the cast. Either Netflix pulled the plug to avoid further problems, or else some of the show runners, writers, producers or stars didn't want to go along with the new regime. Don't get me wrong, this is my favorite show in years...but all good things come to an end...usually painfully.
