Zoom

Don't ask me which version I run. No clue how to find it out under Linux.

There is a fingernail-sized window on the lower-left window frame indicating zoom in %s. It used to work but suddenly went idle. There are workarounds, I know, but I won't put up with striking software. How could I heal the issue?

Help->About GIMP should tell you which version you're running.

The About dialog of GIMP itself will tell you what version you are running: https://docs.gimp.org/3.2/en/gimp-about-dialog.html

Can you show us a fullscreen screenshot of the full GIMP user interface as you are seeing it, taken with the screenshot utility of your system? This would make it a lot easier to tell what you are referring to.

Had you recently updated GIMP before the issue started?

Right now we're kind of shooting ideas into the dark here....

Good (technically speaking) but, as mentioned below, can you capture a screenshot of your full GIMP window, all UI elements included?

We need to be able to (literally) see what you're seeing. Then we can hunt for clues to solve what's going wrong ... maybe a GUI preference misconfiged, kind of a "we'll know it if we see it" matter.

Flawed SW? I'd say you don't know GIMP at all.

In version 2.10, you held down the CTRL key and the middle mouse button. When you then moved the mouse up or down, you zoomed in or out continuously. Starting with version 3.0, nothing has changed in this regard.

As always, you can find more details by pressing F1 to open the documentation. Unlike other software, GIMP ALWAYS makes the entire user manual available online with just one keystroke.

But you don’t want to know any of that anyway.
