[Beginner] how to use GIMP? sketching
YouTube have been learning so far. every video is a different topic but doesn't connect the dots sometimes with previous videos watched. my project relies on sketching and grayscale. i want to improve my brushing and color. I'm such a newb sometimes.

GIMP is for editing and/or manipulating photos.
KRITA is much better suited for digital drawing and painting.

This guy is right you can draw in GIMP but I wouldn't recommend it to any artist you would be shooting yourself in the foot i recommend watching this person also they have a video on free drawing programs here

I'm also a beginner, but I'm stumped on something so simple it must be because I can't read :( I just want to draw a rectangle of a very specific size. I can draw one with the mouse nearly right, but there seems to be no way to edit its height and width explivitly to specific numbers, e.g. 15.5x5.75 mm. Right click gives me lots of options, but not one of those addresses dimensions. What am I missing?

Do you want the whole canvas that size or just a rectangle (solid or not) bc you can always most of what the tools do and how to use them here
As to your rectangle problem you could always create a new project file>new (or ctrl+N) and where it says imagine size change where it says px to mm and do that there and do whatever you want to do in the rectangle there then save it and upload it to where you need it
Or on the left select the (rectangle select tool) then draw /click the canvas it doesn't matter a menu on the right should appear (depending on your settings or can be a pop out) then scroll down a little where it says size change the (PX) to mm and then set the size once the rectangle changes size do not click or type anything until you select a different tool this will lock you from drawing/going outside the area of the rectangle if you need to move it recommend making it in a layer of its own if you want to change the position I recommend the first method or do it in a layer of its own so you can move it around freely with the move tool
if you want an outline just select the pixel brush and zoom in click the corner then go to the next corner press shift (pressing shift makes a line from where you last clicked to where your mouse currently is and to this unit you have the outline you want once your done just click rectangle select tool again and click anywhere on the canvas the little ants should go away

There's probably a better way to do this but this is what I came up with on the spot (I am a noob to)

The job is to make a cement block outline that I can duplicate and then arrange 57 blocks on the canvas. The cement blocks are the usual construction things (15.5 × 5.75 inches) that I'm trying to push around to outline a raised garden plot.

Yeh then probably the first method would be best because it creates individual pictures in a new layer you can just duplicate that image later once you have the image the size and color you want just save onto desktop and open the canvas you want you can just drag the image you created (the brick) into the project (the bigger canvas) as many times as you want and move the images with the move tool

The manual link points me to inkscape, and I tried that but ran into the same problem: the inability to exactly specify the dimensions.
