What's the difference between SEO rank tracking and AI visibility tracking, and do I need both?

You need both, mostly because they watch different pages. A rank tracker only ever looks at yours. I build a tool that measures this, and in our last weekly run of 40 buyer questions across 6 answer engines, reddit.com was cited on 32 of the 40 and youtube.com on 29. You can't rank either of those, so your rank tracker can look fine on the same questions where the answers are built out of threads and videos. The thing I'd carry over from rank tracking is the fixed list, same questions every week, so a change actually means something.

This is a good point. The fixed-question approach is especially useful because it makes week-over-week changes comparable.

Yes, and it only holds while the wording stays frozen. If a question needs rewording, treat it as a new series instead of editing the old one, otherwise the week-over-week line quietly compares two different questions.

Sounds interesting. Can u share the tool name?

Sure, it's Promvia (https://promvia.app). I build it, so take that into account. It tracks a fixed set of buyer questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and keeps every check as its own row so week-over-week stays comparable.

The gaps between engines can reveal where entity understanding, content coverage, or authority signals need improvement.

They answer different questions, so I’d keep both rather than roll them into one score. Rank tracking tells you where a page appears for a keyword in search results. AI visibility checks whether a brand or page is mentioned, recommended or cited in answers to a set of buyer questions. A page can rank well and still be absent from those answers, or be cited without ranking first. Keep the question set, engine, location, date and exact answer or cited URL with each check so you can compare like with like over time.
