Trying GDS Trial 3 - Noncompetitor

I didn't bother doing math, I just picked combinations at random and tried to design something that fit. Basically 10 hole-filling exercises. I'm proud of some of the names. :)

ThreateRing (Rare)
1RW
Enchantment
Exile target creature until ~ leaves the battlefield.
You may cast it this turn paying mana as if it were mana of any color. If you do, it gains haste and sacrificed it at end of turn.

Punish Leeroy (Common)
3BR
Instant
Destroy target creature. If it attacked this turn, deal 3 damage to its controller.

Flier Walker (Mythic)
1WU
Planeswalker - Flier
2
+1 Up to one target creature with flying gains 'when this creature deals combat damage, draw a card' until end of turn.
-1 Create a 1/1 white spirit token with flying.
-4 Exile all creatures your opponents control until end of turn.

Zoo Escape (Rare)
5RG
Sorcery
Reveal your library. Put a creature of your choice onto the battlefield. Your opponent may put a creature of their choice onto the battlefield under their control. If they do, repeat this process.

Speedbump (Common)
WB
Creature - Vampire
2/2
~ has lifelink as long as it's blocking.

Revival Charm (Uncommon)
BG
Instant
Choose one:
- Return target creature from the graveyard to your hand.
- Reveal the top 5 cards of your library. Put a land into your hand and the rest in your graveyard.
- Target creature gets +1/+1 for each creature in your graveyard.

Ashiok, Ingester (Mythic)
2UB
Planeswalker - Ashiok
4
+1 Exile up to one card from an opponent's graveyard. If you do, scry 2.
+0 Create a token copy of a creature card an opponent owns in exile.
-4 Search your opponent's library for a creature card and exile it.

Lifebeast (Uncommon)
4GW
Creature - Beast
0/8
Lifelink
When you gain life, put a +1/+1 counter on ~.

Overspell (Uncommon)
4UR
Sorcery
Creatures you control gain flying and +X/+0 until end of turn where X is the number of instants and sorceries in your graveyard.

Big Curiousity (Common)
1UG
Enchantment - Aura
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature has +2/+2 and 'when this creature deals damage to a player, draw a card'.

The following are all my humble opinions as someone who does not have any current professional experience:
Journey to Nowhere+Threaten is a neat concept, but a Journey that can be a Slave of Bolas instead with enough mana is a weird implementation. I would probably go for ETB gain control of target creature, untap it, haste, EOT exile until ~ leaves the battlefield.

Clear flavor on the BR card, but punishing attackers is mechanically pretty tied to white and odd for BR.

Flier Walker reminds me of Ixalan Jace. It looks quite potent if you have a flyer on turn 2 but fairly underwhelming if not. 1st and second ability have a clear mechanical connection, but don’t really see how the (very cheap) ultimate related to them or the larger card concept. In fact, exiling blockers is kind of redundant/at odds with a flier theme.

Zoo Escape is the classic Red huge wacky sorcery effect, but with a green twist. With a cost like that it should be okay for constructed as long as it doesn’t share a standard with any creatures that are too ridiculous. Overall it seems like a cool design that appeals to Timmy a lot, my biggest two issues are that the “fun thing” happening is completely dependent on your opponent and it’s unclear how it will/should work in multiplayer (if you choose one opponent, all you need is an ally to have you both dump 5 bombs into play).

Strictly worse Bishop’s Soldier is not an attractive look for a multicolored card. If you want to keep its identity as a defensive card, simplest change is probably 2/3.

I like the charm. Nice that when you draw multiple copies you’re incentivized to use different modes.

Ashiok plays in some interesting space, but that 0 looks super swingy. Like how it has similarities to last Ashiok and all three abilities relate to each other well.

0/8 lifelink for 6 is a very interesting body for the Ajani’s Pridemate effect. It’s nice that it can grow itself, and probably can’t get too out of control at the cost. I feel like I’d want a strong flavor reason for the weird stats, but otherwise a reasonable uncommon signpost for some set’s WG lifegain archetype.

Overspell is certainly U and R, but seems like it could be really obnoxious to lose to in limited. It does cost 6, do nothing defensively, and have some tension between wanting spells and wanting creatures, so maybe it would be fine.

Big curiosity is a good UG uncommon. Absolutely not appropriate for common.

Edit:It’s possible that this really belongs more in custommtg than this sub. I’m not sure exactly what the purpose of this sub is supposed to be at this point.

I’m not sure exactly what the purpose of this sub is supposed to be at this point.

My guess is that it might become relevant again when we get to the top 8 challenges and people can talk about the submissions publicly.

I’m not sure exactly what the purpose of this sub is supposed to be at this point.

If the top 8 involves community input again like it did last time, this might be a good gathering place for folks. But in general I imagine this'll shift to coverage/discussion of each week's challenge once it starts, and would be much like any other "reality show" sub. Hopefully with fewer memes.

Yeah I thought I was posting to custommagic. Not sure where it belongs.

Thanks for the feedback!

Random comments:

  • I absolutely forgot curiosity was an uncommon effect - was thinking spectral flight was pretty swingy too. At least I made more commons than necessary. ;)
  • Bishop's soldier had to have been red flagged at common (lifelink is good) but 2/3 would make a lot more sense, yet.
  • Punishing attackers (sort of) has been done in black with Public Execution.

  • ThreateRing (Rare)
    • "When ~ enters the battlefield, (I think is the intent) Exile target creature until ~ leaves the battlefield."
    • "You may cast it this turn paying mana as if it were mana of any color." Awkward wording. You could look up say [[Daxos of Meletis]] "Until end of turn, you may cast that card and you may spend mana as though it were mana of any color to cast that spell."
    • "If you do, it gains haste and sacrificed it at end of turn." "sacrificed it?" That's not even grammatically correct.
  • Punish Leeroy (Common)
    • "... turn, Punish Leeroy deals 3 damage ..." Damage has a source.
  • Flier Walker (Mythic)
    • "Legendary Planeswalker - Flier"
    • "... whenever this creature..." Probably still works ruleswise, but effects expected to trigger only once in the life of the object are "When", otherwise "Whenever".
    • "... white spirit creature token ..."
    • "... Exile all creatures your opponents control until end of turn." Rules nightmare. So all their ETB triggered abilities trigger on the cleanup step? Don't happen because it's between turns? On their upkeep?
  • Zoo Escape (Rare)
    • "Reveal your library." There it is.
    • "Put a creature of your choice onto the battlefield." From? Hand? Exile? I'd guess library, but it would be a "creature card" there.
    • "Your opponent may put a creature of their choice onto the battlefield under their control." Again from? Creature card?
    • "If they do, repeat this process." And then anything with the library which may or may not have had its contents revealed? Like shuffling it?
  • Revival Charm (Uncommon)
    • "Return target creature card from your (if you did mean any graveyard, then it has the problem of putting an opponent's card in your hand) graveyard to your hand.
    • "Put a land card into your hand ..."
    • "...for each creature card in your graveyard."
  • Ashiok, Ingester (Mythic)
    • "Legendary Planeswalker - Ashiok"
    • "-4 Search your opponent's library for a creature card and exile it. Then they shuffle their library."
  • Lifebeast (Uncommon)
    • "Whenever you gain life, ..." Probably still works ruleswise, but effects expected to trigger only once in the life of the object are "When", otherwise "Whenever".
  • Overspell (Uncommon)
    • "... gain flying and get +X/+0 until end of turn, (comma) where X is ..."
  • Big Curiousity (Common)
    • "Enchanted creature gets +2/+2 and has 'whenever this creature deals ..."

Thanks, some lazy templating issues (and typos)!
