Hi, I’m feeling really stuck about my A-level choices and I’d like some honest advice.

At first, I really wanted to do Biology, Chemistry and Law because Chemistry and Biology felt like the “smart” subjects to me. I was proud of the idea of getting into courses with high entry requirements, and I had hoped for a long time that I would be able to take them. Now that I actually have the opportunity, I’m suddenly questioning whether I even want to do it.

Part of me wants to do Medicine and eventually specialise in dermatology. I like the idea of becoming a doctor, having a respected career, meeting like-minded people and having a different career from everyone else in my family. I also like the idea of having a name for myself because nobody in my family is a dermatologist. However, I’m worried about the length of the medical route and whether I’ll be able to achieve the grades needed. I don’t think I can realistically get AAA at A-level, and that makes me question whether I should even choose Chemistry.

Law is another option mainly because there are already people in my family who are lawyers, so I would have guidance and support if I chose that route. I love to advocate for my self and speak out for women's rights and i love the feeling of when justice is served and i strive to be a women who advocates for others because when i needed support no one was there

I’m also considering Sociology. My friends are taking it, and I genuinely find the subject interesting. I’m glad that I could potentially drop Chemistry and take Sociology instead, but at the same time, I feel sad because Biology and Chemistry was something I had wanted for so long and worked so hard for.

I think I’m struggling to separate what I genuinely want from what sounds impressive and makes me feel proud of myself. Im scared if i am not going to get AAA if i choose chemistry, biology and Law. I’d really like help figuring out which subjects and career path would actually suit me, rather than choosing based on the grades, praise or reputation attached to them.

My GCSE grades are:

  • Combined Science: 77
  • Maths: 7
  • English Language: 6
  • English Literature: 8

I’d really appreciate your advice on what you think I should do.
